The goal of this modding guide is to - step by step - create a very stable and lore-friendly Skyrim setup, while adding hundreds of hours of extra content.

It is based on "Legacy of the Dragonborn", "Ordinator" with "Apocalypse" and many DLC - sized Expansion mods like Beyond Skyrim: Bruma

I. Information Area
1.1 What is this?
Spoiler:
Show
This is a step-by-step installation guide. Don't skip a step and read everything, unless you want to risk crashes and instability later on. You have been warned.

The setup has been tested a lot. But keep in mind that there is so much content that it is impossible to test everything. That's why I need your help finding possible bugs and (hopefully not) crashes and freezes. Especially the Expansion Mods have not been tested thoroughly in this specific setup, yet.

1.2 System Requirements
Spoiler:
Show
Tested with following systems:
Windows 7, GTX 1060 & i5-6500: mostly stable 60 fps with 'High' settings and 1080p.
Windows 10, GTX 1080 & i7-8700k: stable 60 fps at all times with 'Ultra' settings and 1080p.

Requires up to 70 GB of disk space. Recommended to be installed on an SSD.

1.3 Mods that are NOT included and why
Read it, before installing additional mods
Spoiler:
Show
Wet and Cold:
Might be safe to use without Frostfall. I don't use it anymore and therefore can't recommend it at the moment.

Immersive Patrols:
It leads to consistant fighting on the roads. While that may sound awesome, it really gets old after some time. Add it, if you like that.

EFF (Extensible Follower Framework) or AFT (Amazing Follower Tweaks):
These are the two big Follower Tweak Mods. I can't assure 100% compatibility. Convenient Horses adds horses for followers already and I don't run around with multiple followers.

Realistic Ragdolls and Force:
After testing, I found the difference to be minor to say the least. And since it includes a skeleton file, I chose to not include it to prevent issues from happening.

SkyHUD:
It's actually one of the best mods out there. I just think, that the vanilla HUD is fine.

Total Character Makeover:
Has been in the setup, but is removed now, because I personally prefer Vanilla.

Opulent Outfits:
The new outfits are nice. But I used it so much, that I prefer just Rustic Clothing (a texture mod) and vanilla outfits. I can confirm, that Opulent Outfits runs well with this setup, as long as you use CRF Fix.

Smooth Running Animations:
No incompatibility at all. Compare it with vanilla and choose for yourself.

Legendary Crossbows:
With LOTD's compatibility patch, it should work fine.

Blowing in the Wind:
The compatibility patches are outdated. You can add the mod, but be careful about the patches.

Dawn of Skyrim:
JK's Skyrim is more complete. It is possible to combine Dawn of Skyrim and JK's Skyrim with patches, but don't expect good performance when doing so.

Simply Knock:
Compatible. I just don't use it.

I don't recommend using these Mods:
Campfire / Frostfall / Wearable Lanterns:
Chesko is awesome, but not active since 2016. And these three mods are a common cause of crashes and weirdness in Special Edition. You can use them, if you absolutely want, but I wouldn't recommend it.

(Even) Better Quest Objectives:
Consistancy issues. Some quest objectives that are added by mods feel out of place, if you use EBQO and there are reports of compatibility issues with several mods.

RLO/ELFX/RS:
They cause flickering and graphical weirdness. ELE (Enhanced Lighting for ENB) has less features, but everything you really need. (darker dungeons and weather based interior lighting)

Morrowloot:
There are too many content mods in this setup. Morrowloot is sadly just not compatible.

FNIS:
We already use three patchers (SSEEdit, Wrye Bash and Dyndolod). FNIS is just not worth the increased risk of crashes and bugs in my opinion. And better running animations as well as better quiver placement - which are the main issues I have - are possible without the use of FNIS.

Immersive Citizens:
Crashes, bugs, compatibility issues. The mod is awesome by itself, but just not possible to be used in bigger modded setups without issues.

Simple Auto Unequip Ammo:
I don't see why you would automatically unequip your quiver by switching weapons. You can probably use it safely as well, but sometimes you have to think twice, if a mod actually makes sense and is neccessary.

Hearthfire multiple adoptions:
Bugs when used in the LOTD Safehouse.

SkyTEST:
Reports of crashes, decreased performance and incompatibility with some other mods. Can't confirm or deny, because I am not interested enough into it's features to include it.

Beards:
Caused weird beard clipping for me. Might be different for you.

Enhanced texture detail:
Makes some structures to have very weird textures on a closer look. Probably because of all of the texture mods.

Joy of Perspective:
Incompatible with some mod added armors. Can be patched and I will maybe do that in the future, because I love JoP.

TK Dodge:
Unbalanced.

II. Getting Started
2.1 Pre-Installation (important!)
To make sure, that everything is in place
Spoiler:
Show

  • Install Skyrim Special Edition and make sure, that the Data folder is completely Vanilla.
  • Download and install Nexus Mod Manager or Mod Organizer. Nexus Mod Manager is recommended for unexperienced users, but Mod Organizer offers many features that make your life easier in the long run.
  • Download and unpack SKSE64 (2.0.7) into "Steam/steamapps/common/Skyrim Special Edition/"
  • Download and install SSEEdit, Loot and Mator Smash. It is recommended to link those three tools in Nexus Mod Manager using the
-Icon (Supported Tools). MO users have to link them in Mod Organizer.
  • Clean your Update.esm, Dawnguard.esm, Dragonborn.esm and Hearthfires.esm. Follow this guide. If you are unsure, if your esm's are cleaned, open LOOT and it will tell you about it. Alternatively, there is a program that does the cleaning for you. But it might not be up to date.

2.2 Install the Mods
The mods are sorted by name and divided into categories. It is important to install the last category (Fixes and Compatibility Patches) at the very last. The rest of the categorization is just for clarity of presentation.

2.3 Load Order
Spoiler:
Show
Before proceeding, check, if Less Dragons is installed correctly. Delete 2 of the 3 .esps, Less Dragons creates.

Now is also a good point to double check, if your masters are cleaned. Loot will tell you with orange or red font color behing Update.esm, etc. when they are not.

1. Start LOOT and edit the Metadata of following plugins:
  • Smilodon - Combat of Skyrim.esp: Load after dD - Enhanced Blood Main.esp
  • Andromeda - Unique Standing Stones of Skyrim.esp: Load after Convenient Horses.esp
  • NoBSAIProjectileDodge.esp: Load after Smilodon - Combat of Skyrim.esp
  • SeeEnchs.esp: Load after Summermyst - Enchantments of Skyrim.esp
  • Ordinator - Perks of Skyrim.esp: Load after Audio Overhaul Skyrim.esp and Load after SAFO.esp
  • Audio Overhaul Skyrim - RealisticWaterTwo Patch.esp: Load after RealisticWaterTwo.esp
2. Let Loot sort the load order. Save, close and restart NMM and Loot. Let Loot sort again, just to be safe.

III. Final Steps
3.1 Smashed Patch
Spoiler:
Show
Here is how to use Mator Smash correctly:

  • Open Mator Smash
  • Select the SSE profile
  • OK
  • Keep all Plugins selected
  • OK
  • Click on the green arrow (Quick Patch)
  • Wait until smashing is done
  • Close Mator Smash
  • Make sure that "Smashed Patch.esp" is activated and at the bottom of the load order
  • Done!

3.2 DynDOLOD
Optional but highly recommended. Takes about half an hour, if you install it on an SSD.
Spoiler:
Show
There is a video by sheson that shows you how to use DynDOLOD. But it is not hard, only takes some time depending on drive type (faster on SSD) and CPU speed.
  • Download DynDOLOD (Standalone and Resources)
  • Add the Resources archive as a mod in NMM and activate it. Overwrite "Indistinguishable Billboards" but nothing else!
  • Unpack the Standalone archive
  • Create a shortcut for "TexGenx64.exe" and "DynDOLODx64.exe"
  • Right click on the newly created shortcut. Add -sse to the path (Example: "C:\DynDOLOD\TexGenx64.exe" -sse)
  • Do the same thing for the other shortcut as well
  • Run TexGen
  • Choose an Output Path for the textures to create and click "Start"
  • (wait till it's done. Takes a few minutes)
  • Right click the created folder (textures) and create a .zip archive (for example with 7zip)
  • Add the archive as mod in NMM and activate it. Overwrite everything.
  • Run DynDOLOD
  • Select all worlds
  • Choose an Output Path and click on "Medium" (or "High" if you really want it)
  • (wait till it's done. Should take 10-20 minutes.)
  • Put the created files and folders into a single .zip archive (for example with 7zip)
  • Add the archive as mod in NMM and activate it. Overwrite everything.
  • Make sure, that DynDOLOD.esm and DynDOLOD.esp exist and are active
  • Done!

3.3 SSE Engine Fixes
Spoiler:
Show
This is optional and still experimental. SSE Engine Fixes includes multiple fixes for different problems of Skyrim like the Double Perk Bug, Save crashes and performance issues.
  • Download both Main Files from SSE Engine Fixes
  • Install (Part 1) like any other mod
  • Extract (Part 2) into the main Skyrim folder
  • Open "EngineFixes64.ini" and change "regularquicksaves=false" to "regularquicksaves=true"
  • Save the INI and you are done

3.4 INI - Tweaks (BethINI and additional Tweaks)
Spoiler:
Show
Run the Launcher of Skyrim Special Edition at least once to generate ini files.
  • Download BethINI and unpack it
  • Open the executable
  • Check "Recommended Tweaks"
  • Click on either High or Ultra depending on your system (I recommend High for GTX 1070 and lower)
  • Here are some Tweaks I recommend you doing in BethINI as well:

    Under Basic:
[on] Windowed Mode <- Skyrim runs better windowed
[on] Borderless <- Windowed Borderless to have the advantages of Fullscreen AND Windowed

    Under Detail:
    [96.42] Field of View
[Low] Godrays <- Almost no visual difference
[off] Depth of Field <- Optional
[1024] Shadow Resolution <- 2048 if you really want shadows to be sharper
[0.25] Sun-Shadow Update Time <- Smoother sun transition
[1.5] Sun-Shadow Update Threshold <- Smoother sun transition
  • Save & Exit BethINI
  • Edit Skyrim.ini (found in My Games/Skyrim Special Edition):

    [Camera]
f1st3rdSwitchDelay=0.95; faster transition between first and third person
iHorseTransitionMillis=0001; faster camera adjustment after dismounting

    [Interface]
fBookOpenTime=200.0; speeds up the opening of books
  • Edit SkyrimPrefs.ini (found in My Games/Skyrim Special Edition/):

    [AudioMenu]
fAudioMasterVolume=2.0000; Enables you to adjust the sound values better

    [Control]
    bMouseAcceleration=0; Fixes Mouse

    [Display]
iReflectionResolutionDivider=4; A big fps increase and you will barely notice it

    [MAIN]
    bSaveOnPause=0
    bSaveOnRest=0
    bSaveOnTravel=0
    bSaveOnWait=0

3.5 First things to do ingame
Spoiler:
Show
It's now time to start the game. Always start the game via skse64_loader.exe!
  • After creating your character, wait a minute, choose a start and interact with the bed
  • Wait another minute for alle the mods to be initialized

You find the MCM (Mod Configuration Menu) when pressing Escape. There are a lot of options you can do. I recommend the following ones:
  • A Matter of Time: Configure the ingame clock (for example: bar, thin and 50% scale)
  • ASG Multithreaded: Check everything
  • iNeed: Set Timescale 12, disable Horse Needs
  • Mark of Arkay: Set your prefered rules for automatic revival
  • Sky UI: Here you can set your Hotkeys for Favorite Sets and more
  • Summermyst: Enable Fortify Skill Caps
  • VioLens: Player Killmove Immunity

Go into the magic menu and use the "Obsidian Weathers and Seasons" magic/shout. Enable Seasons FX.

Read the "Helgen Reborn" book. You can get rid of the ASGM book after choosing a specific option in it's menu and throwing it away.

After you are done with the setup, save the game and type in the following command into the console to check, if Skyrim Skill Uncapper works properly:
player.advskill alchemy 100000000
If your Alchemy skill is capped at 100, you are probably experiencing a bug that prevents Skyrim Uncapper from reckognizing the SkyrimUncapper.ini. There are a few possible solutions. Refer to the next section.

3.6 Important information about Skyrim Skill Uncapper (might be fixed)
Spoiler:
Show
This issue seems to be fixed since the most recent SKSE, but I still recommend double checking it in your game!
The DLL of Skyrim Skill Uncapper has a bug. On some systems, everything works fine, but many systems (including mine) have serious problems loading it via SKSE64. Please consider doing this:

  • Choose a SkyrimUncapper.ini that allows going over 100.
  • Test, if the .ini is correctly loaded every time you start the game. Load a save, open the console and type in "player.advskill alchemy 1000000000000". If Alchemy is capped at 100, it doesn't work. Once it works, it works until you start the game (skse64_loader.exe) again!
  • If you encounter problems, do the following:
  • Install xSHADOWMANx's DLL Loader
  • Cut/Remove SkyrimUncapper.dll and SkyrimUncapper.ini from Data/SKSE/Plugins/
  • Paste/Put SkyrimUncapper.dll and SkyrimUncapper.ini to Data/Plugins/sumwunn/
  • It should work now. But keep testing until you are sure, that it works and report if it doesn't

3.7 I want more FPS
Spoiler:
Show
It's quite easy to get an extra 5-10 fps with SSEFixes and another ~5 fps with Fallout 4 ENBOOST (yes, FO4).
  • Make sure that you have used all the INI - Tweaks I suggested. Only proceed, if you don't get a stable 60 fps. There is no benefit otherwise.
  • Install SSE Fixes if you don't use SSE Engine Fixes. Read the install instructions on that site.
  • If you still want more FPS or a more stable 60 fps, follow this guide of dampapx regarding ENBOOST. Also check the comments section there.

3.8 More Tools and Utilities

If you still want to maximize your Skyrim experience, there are some tools that can be very handy.
  • Skyrim Savegame Manager: Allows you to set rules to delete and backup your savegames. Really useful, if you have multiple characters or want to minimize the "thumbing" bug in the Save/Load Menu that SkyUI introduces.
  • Load Accelerator Guide: If you play on SSD, you can try to reduce loading times by using the FO4 Load Accelerator. It works for SE, if you change a few values. It can be made compatible with ENBOOST by doing this (thanks to ledhead900 for this):

P1 - Preparation
  • Download both ENBoost & LoadAccelerator for Fallout4 (yep FO4)
  • Extract ENBoost & Move the files to your SkyrimSE's directory (same place as SkyrimSE.exe)
  • Extract Load Accelerator & Rename D3D11.dll  >  la_d3d11proxy.dll (actual filename does not matter)
  • Move Load Accelerator files into your SkyrimSE's directory
  • You should have these files in your SkyrimSE directory, move on to the configuration.

P2- Configuration
  •  enblocal.ini

[PROXY]
EnableProxyLibrary=true
InitProxyFunctions=true
ProxyLibrary=la_d3d11proxy.dll ;(if you used a different file name for Load Accelerator DLL put that here!)

IV. Feedback
4.1 Known Bugs
Spoiler:
Show
Please report any bugs you find.
  • Strange behaviour in the Save/Load menu. It is caused by SkyUI and will get fixed one day I hope. Skyrim Savegame Manager and/or SSE Engine Fixes helps.
  • Grass clipping with Veydosebrom "Dense Landscapes" option. Fixed for the most part by Landscape Fixes for Grass Mods, but you will still notice it in some areas.
  • Some instances of clipping or flying objects with SkyBeRoads, Veydosebrom, Lanterns of Skyrim and Skyrim is Windy. To remove them, click on the clipping object while in the console and type in "disable".
  • Belt Fastened Quivers can cause a bug that causes bolts to float in the air. There is a console command to disable quivers being displayed.
  • You can recruit multiple followers at a time when using mod - added followers. Doing that can cause weirdness in some places for some reason.

4.2 FAQ

Show
Can I update the Mod List midgame?
It is not recommended. Adding mods is less problematic than removing mods. If you really want to, make use of FallrimTools to delete orphaned scripts and rebuild relevant patches.

Why deactivating Autosave?
Loading Autosaves can cause script errors. Without SSE Engine Fixes, you should also avoid Quicksaves.

Which mods are optional?
Every mod is optional. But you have to be more careful during FOMOD settings and when installing the Compatibility Patches.

What is the Oldrim Form problem?
drizzlol and ff7legend pointed out a few potential problems with mods that are using the format of Skyrim 2011. A Quality World Map - Vivid with Stone Roads and Enhanced Vanilla Trees are mods that use this so called Form 43. These three mods didn't cause any problem, yet. But if you are paranoid or want to use the Merge Patches feature of Wrye Bash for some reason, you can skip those three mods until the mod author fixes the issue. If you want to know more about it, check the comments section for information and links.
