DESCRIPTION

The original mod for Skyrim can be found in The Ruffled Feather here: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/11/?

Better Dynamic Snow SE leverages the projected snow textures to add new features and even more immersion to give the world a much greater lived-in feel. We felt this was the right thing to do being that BDS has kind of grown long in the tooth with the addition of the projected snow feature in SE. The old version of BDS will remain available to those that need or prefer it.

3.0+ Features
  • Revamped farmhouses inspired by No Snow Under the Roof! As such, snow is mostly removed under overhangs and balconies, which gives a feeling that the people of Skyrim now care for and look after their properties. However, exposed areas and roofs now have more overall snow coverage due to harsh environmental factors.
  • BDS improves snowy walkways to make them look like they are, well, in use. In vanilla Skyrim the walkways are a solid blanket of snow, like they have never been walked on. BDS adds less snow on walkways outside of more public places (such as stores, for example). Other walkways will have slightly more snow because they aren't used quite as much.
  • BDS fixes lingering issues that were never fixed by any patch or mod on the included meshes. This includes fixes for texture stretching, flickering issues, and more.
  • Since all BDS is using are the projected textures and performance-free mesh edits, it will be performance friendly.
  • A projecteddiffuse.dds replacement for vanilla is available that is softer, blends better, and is more detailed vs vanilla.
  • Flexible installation options provided via the installer.

COMPATIBILITY

Better Dynamic Snow is compatible with the following:

  • Any mod that does not conflict with the included meshes.
  • Most snow re-texture mods (see Plugin Options below).
  • SMIM (users should overwrite SMIM)

Note:
BDS is somewhat not compatible with No Snow Under the Roof. You may still be able to mash both mods together for placed objects like snow piles, for example. This is untested though, and we won't be testing it ourselves.

Meshes
All our included meshes are based from SMIM. BDS should win all mesh conflicts, else incompatible meshes will not display the projected textures as desired.

Textures
BDS requires a snow texture found in textures\effects called projecteddiffuse.dds. We have included our own texture that is meant as a replacement for vanilla. This texture can be replaced by any other mod, but the results will vary based on the texture installed.

The projectednoise.dds is a required file and users should NOT overwrite it with any other mod. BDS was designed around this texture.

Lets say this again because people are apparently "reading this 10 times" and still not getting it...
Better Dynamic Snow now requires projected snow textures to work correctly. Not all snow texture mods have these textures!
Ensure you have them! If you don't, see Installation below...

Plugin Options
Various plugins are provided for compatibility with various snow mods. Some mods, like Cathedral Landscapes and Majestic Mountains, already include similar edits within their plugins. Simply allow these mods to overwrite the BDS plugin.

Vanilla Replacement
Use this option for snow mods that replace the snow texture with a similar brightness to vanilla. Mods that are known to work well with this option include:
  • BDS Projected Diffuse (provided via installer)
  • Vanilla Tiled Texture (provided via installer)

Brighter Materials
Use this option for snow mods that replace the snow texture with a darker brightness vs vanilla or for mods that already increase the material brightness. This option maximizes the white color while keeping the vanilla blue tint. Mods that are known to work well with this option include:
  • Cathedral Landscapes
  • Hyperborean Snow SE
  • Majestic Mountains

Brighter Materials - Vanilla UVs
This is the same as the "Brighter Materials" option, but restores the vanilla noise UVs for our materials. This is provided as an option for users using usual snow textures and will restore more of the "BDS v2" look to walkways. However, due to the updated projected noise texture with BDS, users will still not have that "freshly snowed" look. It will be somewhere in-between. Mods that are known to work well with this option include:
  • Fluffy Snow
  • Nordic Snow

INSTALLATION

Installing BDS is very simple:

Choose your version:
If you are using SSE Parallax Shader Fix (BETA)...
  • ...download the Miscellaneous File (Better Dynamic Snow SE v2.11.0). Only this old version will work with this mod.
If you aren't using the mod above...
  • ...download the Main File (Better Dynamic Snow SE v3+)

No, the changes from v3 will not be backported to v2.

  1. Using your mod manager, download the file needed and run the installer.
  2. Install the mod selecting the options desired.
  3. Sort with LOOT.
  4. Ensure bEnableProjecteUVDiffuseNormals=1 is set in SkyrimPrefs.ini file.
  5. Users will have to generate LOD using xLODGen or DynDOLOD, when upgrading from v2 to v3.

For users missing projected diffuse textures:
  1. From your landscape or snow mod, copy snow01.dds and snow01_n.dds to your Textures/effects folder.
  2. In the /effects folder, rename projecteddiffuse.dds to projecteddiffuse.dds_backup
  3. In the /effects folder, rename projectednormal.dds to projectednormal.dds_backup
  4. Rename snow01.dds to to projecteddiffuse.dds
  5. Rename snow01_n.dds to projectednormal.dds

TROUBLESHOOTING

Known Issues

No Glacier Snow Option
Currently, there is an issue if a user installs the "No Glacier Snow" option and decides to uninstall it in a specific situation. If a user installs this option, saves the game in an exterior cell with glaciers loaded, uninstalls this option by reinstalling the mod and skipping the option, and then loads that save, the glacier's previous state will be cached (users will still see no snow on the glaciers). This is expected game behavior for such objects. They will resolve themselves once the cells containing glaciers are unloaded.

Game SSAO (Screen Space Ambient Occlusion)
The game's SSAO can cause shadowy spots on the farmhouse rooftops during certain lighting conditions. So far, we haven't found anything we can do about this. Users can either learn to live with it or turn off the game's SSAO.
