About this mod

The whetstones and armorer's tools were originally planned to serve as the repair kits in the game but were replaced and left over as generic crafting items. This mod restores their original purpose and on top of that makes the whetstones buff your weapons like they were planned to even earlier in development!

Introduction and Background

Introducing Restored Content: Usable Whetstones (and Armorer's Tools). The Witcher 3 currently features both Whetstones and Armorer's Tools each in the Elven, Dwarven, and Gnomish variety. However, unlike previous games they serve no purpose other than to be junk and an ingredient to craft the generic weapon and armor repair
kits. They can't even be dismantled! However, as you might have guessed from the mod name this was not always the case during the game's
development. There is clear evidence in the xml definitions that the Whetstones and Armorer's Tools were actually supposed to be the weapon and armor repair kits respectively. There are also generic versions of the Whetstone and Armorer's tools commented out in the xmls which have unique leftover icons and strings. In addition, thanks to user Flipper444 we know that even earlier in development the Whetstones were also supposed to buff your swords like in Witcher 1 and 2.

In this mod, I have managed to restore all the functionality described above without sacrificing any of the weapon or armor repair kits currently in the game. First, I have restored the generic Whetstone and Armorer's Tools with their unique icons by mounting them as dlc items to avoid conflicts. I modified each of the generic, elven, dwarven, and gnomish Whetstones and Armorer's Tools to enable them to repair weapons/armor. I then let the Whetstones also be blade oil type items that buff your steel or silver weapon's attack power and critical hit damage for a certain amount of charges. The game absolutely hates having items fulfill multiple roles so I had to pull some tricks to make this work smoothly. I also figured out that CDPR commented out all the dismantling components for Whetstones and Armorer's tools. I went ahead and re-enabled these to allow dismantling. Lastly, you can still sell or use the Whetstones or Armorers tools to craft repair kits like in vanilla.

Mechanics

This mod restores the cut Whetstone and Armorer's Tools itemsalong with their unused unique icons. They have been added into shops where whetstones could be found in the vanilla game(usually Armorers and Blacksmiths). In addition, the items have been integrated into the game's loot tables and have a chance to spawn in the same container types as repair kits. All of this was accomplished via DLC to avoid conflicts.

The mod also implements repair kit functionality to the existing elven, dwarven, and gnomish whetstones and armorer's tools. The items are tiered in the order of generic, elven, dwarven, and gnomish. Generic is tiered as common and has 5% repair value. Elven is tiered as Masterand has 7% repair value. Dwarven is tiered as Magic and has a 10% repair value. Gnomish is tiered as Relic and has a 13% repair value. The whetstones also improve either your steel or silver weapon and function essentially as oils do.  Attack power buffs of 5, 10, 15, and 20% are granted for 10,15,20, and 25 charges for each tier respectively. In addition, the dwarven and gnomish whetstones will give a 2% and 5% critical hit damage bonus respectively. Blade oils can be applied alongside the whetstone buff. The fixative skill which allows you to apply up to three additional blade oils is fully supported but only a single whetstone buff can be active at a time. That means you can have up to three oils and one whetstone buff active at a time. You also can apply whetstone at 100% item durability if you only want the buff. At 100% durability, you must do this by selecting the item as drag and drop will prevent you from applying the whetstones at 100% durability. A safety measure is in place to stop you from wasting repair kits at 100% durability.

In the vanilla base game, the elven, dwarven, and gnomish whetstones and armorer's tools only spawn in certain shops(usually smiths and only after Geralt reaches level 13) while in Blood and Wine they do spawn in shops and some containers. I've kept this as is but I have also introduced them to container loot tables around the world in the base game. You can now find them in similar containers to where repair kits spawned. I have also added the generic Whetstone and Armorer's tools to shops and containers as well. In addition, the grandmaster armorer now carries all the Whetstones and Armorer's tools as he should since he didn't carry any in vanilla.

I have also restored the ability for whetstones and armorer's tools to be dismantled. The parts they should break down into were commented out by CDPR and I just uncommented them back in
. Lastly, you should still be able to use the whetstones and armorer's tools for crafting repair kits just like in vanilla. In the inventory they have been moved from the crafting ingredients section to the weapons and armor sections like the repair kits. I tried to also have them in crafting ingredients but this caused bugs and I thought it would be too confusing to have the same item repeated in the inventory.

Installation

Unpack 'modWhetstone' to your 'mods' folder and unpack 'dlcwhetstone' to your 'dlc folder. Merge scripts with script merger.

Compatibility

I've made as much of this mod DLC as I could to avoid conflicts. However, the eleven, dwarven, and gnomish whetstones and armorer's tools are vanilla items. Normally I would have to ship the whole def_items_ingredients.xml file to mod these which would cause massive conflicts with other mods. However, I have pulled a trick to avoid this since I'm just modding a few items and don't want to create a bunch of compatibility patches. I have managed to override the vanilla definitions for the eleven, dwarven, and gnomish whetstones and armorer's tools specifically. This means that there won't be any xml conflicts with this mod! However, keep in mind that this mod WILL override any other edits other mods may make to the vanilla whetstones and armorer's tools(I'm not sure if there even any tbh) and this conflict will be silent meaning no warnings. The item override trick does not work in 1.32 so there is potential for a xml conflict in the classic version. The scripts provided in this mod should be easily mergable with scriptmerger.
