SE Description below:

Keep it Clean - A Bathing Mod
by Sthaagg Memnochs and clioshand

LE version - Simple Bathing

If you love needs mods, then there's something you'll need when you stumble freezing and starving into an inn – a bath!

Description

Keep It Clean is a streamlined mod which adds cleanliness / dirt management to Skyrim gameplay.

Over the time, your player character will become visually dirty, your speechcraft and sneaking abilities will suffer (You stink! Do you really think you can talk to people or approach them stealthily when you smell like Pepe the Pew!? ), and your disease resistance will decrease too, to the point that you can be infected (configurable in the MCM).

Washing yourself regularly will avoid these penalties and will provide bonus to your speechcraft and your disease resistance. Using special soaps will give you additional small bonuses.

Bathe anywhere

To wash yourself, you only need soap and to find a small patch of water, like a pond, river, or lake. Almost all of the water in Skyrim will work, even if it's only foot deep. You simply need to stand in water and use a soap from your inventory (in the potion category). Your equipped items will be automatically unequipped and re-equipped after the animation has played.

If water is too cold, too dangerous, or too far, you can also craft some washwater for a quick sponge-off - the bonus buffs will be halved compared to a full water wash with soap.  You can craft soap & washwater at any cookpot. (Works great with Campfire's cooking pot.)

(See note below for compatibility with water mods.)

Soap & washwater:

7 types of soaps  (with their own textures) are craftable through the cooking pot :
  • Plain Soap (Fortify Sneak +5)
  • Blue mountain flowers Soap (Regenerate health +5)
  • Red mountain flowers Soap (Regenerate magicka +5)
  • Purple mountain flowers Soap (Regenerate stamina +5)
  • Superior mountain flowers Soap (Regenerate health +3, Regenerate magicka +3, Regenerate stamina +5)
  • Lavender flowers Soap (Fortify Speechcraft +3, Resist Magic +4)
  • Dragon tongue flowers (Fortify Speechcraft +3, Resist Fire +5)

7 types of washwater (same types, bonuses are halved compared to soap) are craftable through the cooking pot.

Using a different way to wash yourself induces slightly different bathing animations.

Baths in Inns

Bathing rooms have been added to all the vanilla inns in Skyrim and Solstheim. Each is its own cell, with a minimal footprint inside the inns – usually just a trapdoor and a small basket or other clutter to indicate the bathing room.  Exceptions are some inns that have a basement, like the Bee & Barb in Riften or the Nightgate Inn– the bath has a full door in the cellar. I also added a full door to the New Gnisis Cornerclub and the Retching Netch in Raven Rock.

You must speak to the innkeeper to obtain the key to the bathroom. You will then have access to the bath for 12 game hours.

Each bathing room has a bath with seats and spouted water (hence the original ‘Showers’ moniker). When using the bath, your player character will feel warmed (all baths are Frostfall enabled) & more relaxed. In addition to other bonuses, you will gain a small bonus to your learning abilities.

Your player character can also bathe in comfort! In each bathroom, toggle the "undress basket" (basket of armor or clothing) to unequip all items. Click again to re-dress and re-equip your weapons and equipped spells. NPCs will disrobe upon entering the bath, and can relax on the benches or chairs provided. (NPCs and the player character will use whatever body you have installed, nevernude or not, so your SFW quotient is up to you.)

All soap baskets in Inn baths open a merchant container where you can buy some soap and sell yours.

Follower support

But what about my followers ?
Followers are supported! Not only will they undress in baths, they become dirty the same as you. By default follower support is enabled in the MCM. When you bathe yourself, KiC will detect all your teammates. Most custom followers are detected automatically (like Vilja or Inigo). If yours is not detected, you can use the built-in feature in the MCM to add them to the list of supported followers.

Custom baths

And what about my player home
This mod allows you to build your own bathing room! Choose between five themed bathrooms. You can install them anywhere! Bath building kits are available at Solitude and Whiterun merchants. (Be sure to check your leveled list setup to ensure the bath kits get forwarded into your final conflict resolution smashed/bashed patches.)

And what about my permanent camp?
This mod includes placeable washbaskets that you can also use anywhere, such as your player home or camp. These permit you access to your soap reserve from any house or camp (multiple baskets link together).
The portable clothes basket works same way - place anywhere, and your player character can strip down to wash.

Gameplay overview:

Cleanliness and Dirtiness tiers:

  • Clean & relaxed (+5 speechcraft, +20 resist disease, +5% learning skill), require to bathe in a bathroom, default buff duration is 4 in-game hours.
  • Clean (+5 speechcraft, +20 resist disease) require to use a soap and bath in a river, default buff duration is 4 in-game hours.
  • Refreshed when you use wash water (+2.5 speechcraft, +15 resist disease), default buff duration is 4 in-game hours.
  • Not dirty (no bonus / no malus)
  • Dirty (-5 speechcraft, -10 resist diseases, -5 sneaking) occurs 16 hours after your bath.
  • Very Dirty (-10 speechcraft, -20 resist diseases, -10 sneaking) occurs 24 hours after your bath

Note:
You can be Clean & Relaxed OR Clean OR Refreshed (they don't stack).
Dirty debuffs can be disabled in the MCM.
Water restriction can be disabled - soap becomes only usable in bath rooms, you must use washwater when you are in an exterior.

You need to start the mod through the MCM

OR washing yourself will initialize the mod

Widget add-on
You can also track your status with the widget add-on made by AubeD, check it out here:
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/34502

How it works:

Buff duration is in game hours, so the clean state should last 4-5 hours (default), neutral state (not dirty) 4-5 hours more (default), then you fall into the dirty state. So with a timescale of 10, Clean state should last 24-30 min real time, and neutral 24-30 min more. You will fall into the dirty state after around 44-60 minutes of playing (small variation due to how my script works).

For people worried about performance: This mod has nearly no impact, only one script is fired every game hour to calculate how much time is passed. Other simple checks are done when you use soap/washwater.

Per-location dirt accumulation

AS of 3.0, KiC calculates how fast you become dirty based on locations you've been in.

Every 12 in-game minutes (0.2 hours, configuarble in MCM) the mod will check your location. It then checks if the location has various keywords. Location keywords are separated by dirtiness, so if the location has several then the dirtiest ones will be noticed first.

Location keywords are separated as follows:
Spoiler:
Show

Places that are usually filthy and disease-ridden: dragon priest lairs, draugr crypts, falmer hives, hagraven nests, vampire lairs, warlock lairs. (Adds a x2 multiplier, thus x3 normal rate.)

Places that tend to be very dirty, where measures are almost never taken to clean or to prevent disease, but which are less filthy than above: ash spawn areas, cemetarys, dragon lairs, dungeons, nordic ruins, shipwrecks, werebear lairs, werewolf lairs. (x2.5 normal rate)

Places that tend to be dirty, but where measures (however minimal) are regularly taken to clean or to discourage disease: animal dens, camps (bandit, forsworn, giant, riekling), jails, barracks, military camps, military forts, ships. (x2)

Places that are neither particularly dirty nor clean, but can be favorable to diseases enduring / spreading: caves, ice caves, mines, dwemer ruins, dwemer automaton areas. (x1.5)

The default location values, also used if no location keyword can be found: farm, outdoors, orc stronghold. (x1.25)

Places that are regularly habitated: castles, lumber mills, stores, settlements, towns. (x1)

Places that tend to be clean or are should be supernaturally resistant to disease: dwellings, homesteads, houses, inns, pillars (DLC2), spriggan groves. (x0.75)

Places where filth and disease are rare: player homes, temples. (x0.5)

How to tweak it

Use the MCM menu
If you don't have SkyUI, you can use the configuration spell, but it is very limited. (If you can't stand SkyUI, use Hide SkyUI instead.)

Through the console (change will be stored in your save):
Spoiler:
Show

Open it (²) and type :
set SBBathSoapEffectLengthGLOBAL to 8.00 (default value, replace by what you want).
set SBBathTimetobeDirtyGLOBAL to 12.00 (default value, replace by what you want). This value must be superior to SBBathSoapEffectLengthGLOBAL (min 2 hours).

With xEdit :
Open the plugin and change these values :
SBBathSoapEffectLengthGLOBAL (default is 8.00) defines the duration of the "clean" bonus
SBBathTimetobeDirtyGLOBAL (Default is 12) defines after how many time you're being "dirty". This value must be superior to SBBathSoapEffectLengthGLOBAL (min 2 hours).

The delta between these values is the "neutral" state duration.

How to build your own bathing room:

Visit a vendor and buy a scroll of instructions that enables you to place a trapdoor that leads to a new custom bathing room. Various decor objects from some of the great modder's resources on the Nexus make each bath unique.

  • Belethor's will have Nord and Noble versions
  • Bits and Pieces in Solitude will have Noble and Redguard
  • Sadri's Used Wares carries the Dunmer style
  • Some Orc blacksmiths will have an Orc version.

Note: The placement is permanent. When you build, the trapdoor will be placed directly under your feet, oriented in the exact direction you are facing. So use your player character as your guide for placement. (I recommend you make a save just before you build!) Building will take from 9-12 hours of game time, so expect to be tired and hungry after if you use needs mods. You can build only one bathroom of each type in the game (so if you want to build more than one bath in your current game, be sure to purchase a different style. You can have all styles at once.)

Placeable washbaskets

Craft it, drop it, and hold the activator key (usually E or controller A) to place it where you want it. (If you want finer control of placement, positioner mods are your friends.)

For the discerning Dragonborn, there are a few fancier baskets for purchase at Belethor’s in Whiterun and Bits and Pieces in Solitude.

Installation

REQUIRES SKSE.

Does NOT require FNIS/Nemesis - the animations are a simple vanilla idle combo.

I recommend installing with Mod Organizer (or alternatively Vortex). If you have a mod that uses some of the same modder's resources, your mod manager may indicate an overwrite. This is not a problem, they should be identical - if I made changes to any assets they will be in the clioshand directory.

For best results, install after any mods that add items to the inns.

Use a Bashed Patch or a smashed patch for leveled lists.

Compatibility

Water mods
Like other needs mods,  outdoor water requires the "causes damage" flag enabled. Use the patches noted below to work with water mods. (KiC is compatible with iNeed).

All mods which support iNeed's waterskin refill/drinking from water feature make this mod compatible as well, same for RnD. You only need one fix!
For a 'global' solution for your modlist, you might want to try the zedit Water Damage patcher available here

Or download patches for these mods on the Files page:
Realistic Water Two - for version 5+, use the patch provided here in Optional Files (overwrite/replace the patch included in the main download).
Cathedral Water Overhaul - patch provided by ArranzCNL
Beyond Skyrim - Bruma SE
Falskaar

Inn mods
For maximum compatibility, the added baths have a minimum footprint - usually just putting a trapdoor in the inns. Mods that greatly change the inn interiors will conflict without a patch.
Compatible with Distinct Interiors - use the provided patch.
Compatible with Friendlier Taverns (no Bath version) - load KiC after.

Other support
Support for Hunterborn's animal fat ingredient, use the provided patch. (Try Hunterborn SE MCM)

The great Inigo and Vilja are natively supported.
Sofia too, but her 'relax' feature can lead to error with KiC's detection system, use the built-in feature add her to the support list.

There are a few items added to merchants chests and merchant level lists – so if you have other mods that add to these, you’ll want to make a bashed patch with Wrye Bash or a Smashed patch with Mator Smash.

Permissions

We want to share freely with the community as others have so generously shared with us. But we also believe strongly in attribution. You pretty much need to know you have clear permissions for anything you want to extract from this mod, since they are combos of others’ resources.

The use of Jokerine’s Showers in Inns was by permission. She has now released her mods to the community. Everything else comes from free-to-use modder’s resources. HOWEVER you must give credit to any authors whose assets are used. See the Credits list for an idea of where everything is from, or PM us.

If you would like to use anything that is an original asset from this mod, just drop us a line to let us know and kindly give us credit. (Sthaagg for the scripts and bathing mechanics side of things, and clioshand for the bathing rooms, some compiled clutter, and the washwater and various activator baskets.)
