Keep it Clean - A Bathing Mod

I love needs mods, and I always felt there was something missing when I stumbled freezing and starving into an inn – a bath!

Keep it Clean is a streamlined mod which adds cleanliness / dirtyness management to Skyrim gameplay.

Over the time, your player character will become visually dirty, your speechcraft and sneaking abilities will suffering of you dirtiness (You stink ! Do you really think you can talk to people or approach them stealthy when you smell like Pepe the pew !? ), and your disease resistance will decrease too to the point that you can be infected (configurable in the MCM).

Washing yourself regularly will avoid these penalties and will provide bonus to your speechcraft and your disease resistance. Using special soap will give you additional bonus.
To wash yourself, you only need soap and to find a small river spot. If water is too cold, too dangerous, or too far, you can use some washwater, bonus will be halved compared to soap.  you can craft soap & washwater at any cookingpots.

When use one of the inns' bathroom, your player character will feel warmed (frostfall friendly) & more relaxed, in addition to other bonus, you will gain a small bonus to your learning abilities.
Each bathing room has a bath with bench and spouted water (hence the original ‘Showers’ moniker). NPCs will disrobe upon entering the bath, and can relax on the benches or chairs provided. (NPCs will use whatever body you have installed, nevernude or not, so your SFW quotient is up to you.)
You must ask to the innkeeper to obtain the key and grant access to the bathroom.

Your player character can also bathe in comfort! In each bathroom, toggle the "undress basket" (basket of armor or clothing) to unequip all items. Click again to re-dress and re-equips your weapons and equipped spells, a soapbasket will permit you to buy some soaps.

Each is its own cell, with a minimal footprint inside the inns – usually just a trapdoor and a small basket or other clutter to indicate the bathing room.  Exceptions are some inns that have a basement, like the Bee & Barb in Riften – the bath has a full door in the cellar. I also added a door to the Retching Netch in Raven Rock and New Gnisis Cornerclub. (Nightgate Inn now has an access door in the basement.)

And there’s more! I just know people will ask – 'but what about my followers ?
Followers are supported ! They become dirty as same as you.
By default follower support is enabled in the MCM. When you bathe
yourself, Kic will detect all your teammate. Must of the custom follower
are detected automatically (like Vilja or Inigo). If your is not
detected, you can use the built-in feature to add it easily to the list
of the supported follower.

And what about my player home
This mod allows you to build your own bathing room! Choose between five bathrooms! You can install it anywhere!

And what about your permanent camp?
This mod includes placeable washbaskets that you can near your player home or camp.
Like the inn baskets, these are permanent and can be used infinite times.
Clothebasket works same way. Soapbasket which are linked together and permit you access to your soap reserve from any house or camp.

Special thanks

- Most assets are vanilla except some amazing Nordic wall carvings from Nordic Carving - Wallbaskets by mikeynexus. It really punches up the decor.
- Thanks to Jokerine graciously allowing me to use the assets from Showers in Inns, I had the perfect base to add bathing rooms to all the vanilla inns in Skyrim and Solstheim.)
- Many thanks to gezegond for the mechanics from Live Anywhere - Constructible Shacks.
- Alternate texture from dereko

Gameplay overview:

Cleanliness and Dirtiness tiers:

  • Clean & relax (+5 speechcraft, +20 resist disease, +5% learning skill), require to bathe in a bathroom, default buff duration is 4 in-game hours.
  • Clean (+5 speechcraft, +20 resist disease) require to use a soap and bath in a river, default buff duration is 4 in-game hours.
  • Refreshed when you use wash water (+2.5 speechcraft, +15 resist disease), default buff duration is 4 in-game hours.
  • Not dirty (no bonus / no malus)
  • Dirty (-5 speechcraft, -10 resist diseases, -5 sneaking) occurs 16 hours after your bath.
  • Very Dirty (-10 speechcraft, -20 resist diseases, -10 sneaking) occurs 24 hours after your bath

You can be Clean & Relax OR Clean OR Refreshed.
Dirty debuff can be disabled

You need to start the mod through the MCM or wash yourself to initialize the mod

How it works:

Buff duration is in game hours, clean state should last 4-5 hours (default), neutral state (not dirty) 4-5 hours more(default), before you fall to dirty state.
So with a timescale of 10, Clean state should last 24-30 min real time, and neutral 24-30 min more, you fall to dirty state after around 44-60 minutes of playing (small variation due to how my script works).

For people worried about performance: This mod are nearly no impact, only one script is fired every game hour to calculate how many time is passed.
Other check are done when you use soap / washwater.

How to tweak it

Use the New MCM menu

If you don't have skyui, you can use the configuration spell, but it is very limited, if you can't stand SkyUI, use Hide SkyUI mod instead.

Through the console (change will be stored in your save):
Open it (²) and type :
set SBBathSoapEffectLengthGLOBAL to 8.00 (default value, replace by what you want).
set SBBathTimetobeDirtyGLOBAL to 12.00 (default value, replace by what you want). This value must be superior to SBBathSoapEffectLengthGLOBAL (min 2 hours).

With TESVEdit :
Open the plugin and change these values :
SBBathSoapEffectLengthGLOBAL (default is 8.00) defines the duration of the "clean" bonus
SBBathTimetobeDirtyGLOBAL (Default is 12) defines after how many time you're being "dirty". This value must be superior to SBBathSoapEffectLengthGLOBAL (min 2 hours).

The delta between these values is the "neutral" state duration.

Where to bath:

Almost all of the water in Skyrim will work, even if it's only foot deep, all Inn's bathroom and buildable bathroom.
You simply need to stand in water and use a soap or washwater from your inventory (potion category). Your equipped items will be automatically unequipped and re-equipped after the animation was played.

Modified inns :
  • Braidwood Inn - Kynesgrove
  • Candlehearth Hall - Windhelm
  • Dead Man's Drink - Falkreath
  • Four Shields Tavern - Dragon Bridge
  • Frostfruit Inn - Rorikstead
  • Moorside Inn - Morthal
  • New Gnisis Cornerclub - Windhelm
  • Nightgate Inn - The Pale
  • Old Hroldan Inn - The Reach
  • Silver-Blood Inn - Markarth
  • Sleeping Giant Inn - Riverwood
  • The Bannered Mare - Whiterun
  • The Bee and Barb - Riften
  • The Frozen Hearth - Winterhold
  • The Winking Skeever - Solitude
  • Vilemyr Inn - Ivarstead
  • Windpeak Inn - Dawnstar
  • Retching Netch - Raven Rock

For maximum compatibility, all changes made are just putting a trapdoor in the inns. Hopefully it will be compatible with any mods that make
changes to the cities, or to the inns themselves, but if a door is conflicting somewhere, let me know and I'll try to move it around.

To access to the bathe you must pay a fee to the innkeeper (configurable), it will give you a key and let you enjoy the bath for 12 hours.

Water restriction can be disabled, soap become only usable in bathroom, you must use washwater when you are in exterior.

Soap & waswater:

7 type of soaps (with their own textures) craftable through the cooking pot :
  • Plain Soap (Fortify Sneak +5)
  • Blue mountain flowers Soap (Regenerate health +5)
  • Red mountain flowers Soap (Regenerate magicka +5)
  • Purple mountain flowers Soap (Regenerate stamina +5)
  • Superior mountain flowers Soap (Regenerate health +3, Regenerate magicka +3, Regenerate stamina +5)
  • Lavender flowers Soap (Fortify Speechcraft +3, Resist Magic +4)
  • Dragon tongue flowers (Fortify Speechcraft +3, Resist Fire +5)

7 type of Wash water (bonus are halved compared to soap) craftable through the cooking pot

Using different way to wash yourself induces slightly different bathing animations.
All washbaskets in Inn open a merchant container where you can buy some soap and sell yours.

How to build your own bathing room:

Visit a vendor and buy a scroll of instructions that learns you to place a trapdoor that leads to a new custom bathing room. Various decor objects from some of the amazing modder's resources on the Nexus make each bath unique.

  • Belethor's will have Nord and Noble versions
  • Bits and Pieces in Solitude will have Noble and Redguard
  • Sadri's Used Wares carries the Dunmer style
  • Some Orc blacksmiths will have an Orc version.

Note: The placement is permanent. When you build, the trapdoor will be placed directly under your feet, oriented in the exact direction you are facing. So use your player character as your guide for placement. (I recommend you make a save just before you build!) Building will take from 9-12 hours of game time, so expect to be tired and hungry after if you use needs mods. You can build only one bathrooms from each type in game.

Placeable washbaskets

Craft it, drop it, and hold the activator key (usually E or controller A) to place it where you want it. (If you want finer control of placement, positioner mods are your friends.)

For the discerning Dragonborn, there are a few fancier baskets for purchase at Belethor’s in Whiterun and Bits and Pieces in Solitude.

Should be overall compatible with everything that Showers in Inns works with – which is mostly everything.

All mod which bring support to ineed waterskin refill / drinking from water flows features make this mod compatible with it, same for
RnD. Obviously it is compatible with iNeed - you can refill waterskins from the bath (but i'm not sure it is a great idea).

Compatible with Realistic Water Two, use their needs mod patch.
Compatible with Cathedral Water Overhaul, use patch provided by ArranzCNL
Compatible with Beyond Skyrim - Bruma SE, use provided patch.
Compatible with Falskaar, use provided patch.
Compatible with Distinct Interior, use provided patch.
Compatible with Friendlier Tavern (no Bath verrsion), load KiC after.
Support Hunterborn's animal fat ingredient, use provided patch. (Try Hunterborn SE MCM)
The greats Inigo and Vilja are natively supported.
Sofia too, but her relax feature can lead to error with my detection system, Using the built-in feature add her to the manual supported list.
And certainly many more !!

There are a few items added to merchants chests and merchant level lists – so if you have other mods that add to these, you’ll want to make a bashed patch with Wrye Bash or a Smashed patch with Mator Smash.

Main mod can be merged but if you plan to follow update I strongly suggest to avoid to merge it.
You can merge parches together.

Does not require FNIS - the animations are a simple vanilla idle combo.

I recommend installing with Mod Organizer (or alternatively Nexus Mod Manager). If you have a mod that uses some of the same modder's resources, NMM may ask you to overwrite. Just say yes, they should be identical - if I made changes to any assets they will be in the clioshand directory.

For best results, install after any mods that add items to the inns.

Use a Bashed Patch or a smashed patch for leveled lists.

I want to share freely with the community as others have so generously shared with us. But I also believe strongly in attribution. You pretty much need to know you have clear permissions for anything you want to extract from this mod, since they are combos of others’ resources.

The bathing rooms are based on Jokerine’s Showers in Inns, and would require my permission as well as Jokerine’s to use. (Just let me know if Jokerine gave you permission, then you'll have mine.)

Everything else comes from free-to-use modder’s resources. HOWEVER  you must give credit to any authors whose assets I have used. See the Credits list for
an idea of where everything is from, or PM me.

If you would like to use anything that is my own asset from this mod, just drop me a line to let me know (I’d love to see it!) and kindly give me credit.
(Mostly what would be of interest would be the buff scripts and un/dressing activators, some compiled clutter, and the washwater/washbaskets.)

Much appreciation goes to Jokerine, who allowed me to use the assets from Showers in Inns
Also a big shout-out to TwilightStar who fixed up the lighting in the baths - it's much more realistic and atmospheric now.

Bathing would not be the same without Insanity Sorrow’s Towels, Soaps, and Washing Stuffs (scrubby brushes & washtub)
I just had to use Amelli’s excellent Insanity's Soap - Retexture – there’s a different one for nearly every inn!
The various basket resources were provided by Lillith's Ready Clutter and Furnishings 1.0 and 1.1 and Lolicept Resources by LOLICEPT
The bath bottle bling was courtesy of Morrowind Style Clutter and More by The_Funktasm
The silver tray for the fancy bathbasket is from Oaristys' Modder's Resource Pack
Non-vanilla armours in the clothing baskets are from Brigandage by Franklin Zunge
Nordic wall carvings from Nordic Carving - Wallbaskets by mikeynexus
I used the shader and soap recipes from mzin’s Bathing in Skyrim, as well as consulted its scripts to figure out my own
And the NPC undress script is courtesy of the excellent tutorial and resources by Jet4571 for Bathing Suit in a Pool Script and files (and yes, I did start giving everyone a spa-like little wrap for bathing, then quit when I realized the proliferation of body mods made it a nightmare to stay compatible)
I used the building scripts from gezegond's really cool Live Anywhere - Constructible Shacks for the mechanics to make the buildable baths.
Redguard decor from Farinelli's Redguard shields (Hammerfell armoury), flintone's Orient Set, and Arab Art Resource by Leodoidao
The Redguard lamp is from Modder's Resource Pack - The Witcher Extension by Oaristys

Custom bathing room rugs and tapestries from Rug Resource by yourenotsupposedtobeinhere and Tlaffoon's Rugs and Tapestries by Tlaffoon
I also consulted the scripts in Interactive Wash Basins by simsim899 and the PC undress script from Open-air bath in cities - Yukemuri Skyrim by dareka62 to figure out my own versions, big thanks for posting your source files
Thanks to Chesko for making Frostfall compatibility shockingly easy
Big nod to the Tes5edit team of ElminsterAU, Hlp, Zilav, and Sharlikran who made most of this possible
Thanks to Tzefira for helping me to improve in-game messages.
And thanks to Bethesda for Skyrim and the chance to make our videogame visions real.
