Mass Effect 3

This tutorial is a 2 part article, due to it's extreme length, and covers how to properly install ME3 and desired mods and fixes. This also contains detailed information on my personal preferences for installing certain mods and aren't necessarily required. I strongly encourage the entirety of the tutorial and applicable external tutorial references before implementing. It'll ultimately save you time.

Part 2 is located here

Part 1
Download/revert to Vanilla Game and Official DLC

Spoiler:
Show
Note: I highly recommend downloading your game and DLC directly from Origin (This tutorial does not support pirated versions of the game). Once the game is properly installed, make a copy of the Mass Effect 3 game folder and save it somewhere else as a backup. It'll make reinstalling you're game much faster, which is extremely important if you screw something up or regularly modify your game.

Default Origin Location
C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Mass Effect 3

My Current Game Location:

E:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Mass Effect 3

1. Uninstall using Windows' "add or remove programs" feature

2. If you've made any modifications to your previous install, you'll need to delete the Mass Effect 3 folder AFTER uninstalling the official way.
Note: This is because the official uninstaller can only remove files it recognizes, therefore any modifications your old mods made will remain.

3. Replace the Mass Effect 3 game folder with the vanilla backup you hopefully made. If you don't have a vanilla backup yet, install via Origin.

4. Run Origin and "Download" ME3.
Note: If you installed from your vanilla backup it will verify the game and won't actually download.

5. Run a repair for sh!tz and gigz.
Note: likely unnecessary, but definitely doesn't hurt.

6. Run ME3 to title screen once.
Note: This is necessary if the Document folder needs built or rebuilt.

7. If the Document folder is rebuilt, replace GameSettings.ini with preferred version if applicable, otherwise run Mass Effect 3 Config and make changes there.

.ini is typically located in:
C: Users\User\Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect 3\ BioGame\Config

Note: This allows ALOT to make fresh edits to the file in later steps, if you use it. Conversely if you no longer use ALOT, you'll need to delete the changes it made to your
GameSettings.ini. If for some reason you've been encountering issues with the ALOT installer, there is a workaround I'll detail later in the tutorial, but you will need ALOT's edits present in your GameSettings.ini.

My personal GameSettings.ini in spoilers below
ALOT's edits are highlighted

Part 2
Installing DLC Mods using Mass Effect 3 Mod Manager

Spoiler:
Show

1.  Install Mass Effect 3 Mod Manager and complete setup as detailed by mod author. Praise be to Mgamerz

2.  Install DLC Bypass and desired ASI with Mass Effect 3 Mod Manager (Will be referred to as MM for the rest of this tutorial)

-Install "Bink32 DLC Bypass" ASI under "Mod Management" tab (Required if you're using mods)

-Install Mouse Disabler ASI under "Mod Management" tab (My Personal Preference)

Note: Only delete contents of MM's mods folder if you desire a clean install of everything. Individual mods can be updated and deleted without removing the others. If you do delete the contents of the mods folder you will need to reapply any of your custom mod/pcc file edits to the freshly installed mods

3.  If you are importing fresh, drag and drop zip files directly into MM and follow the prompts or use executables and import afterwards with MM.

Note: Do NOT apply any mods during this step with MM. This will be done in Part 2, step 6, of this tutorial. This is particularly important if you use SP Controller and/or use any of my .pcc file editing tutorials. If neither of these situations pertains to you, applying the mods immediately after downloading them into MM should not be a problem.

-For executables, click on MM's Mod Management's tab and select "Import Mod" > "Import Installed Custom DLC Mod" from the drop down menus.
Select the Mod you just installed from the pop up menu and click "Import"

Note: This will expedite the process for future installs as MM will save the imported file the executable created and you can simply apply it with a single click.

The following spoiler contains the list of mods I personally use and are listed in the order I install them:

Spoiler:
Show
1.  SP Controller - Version 2.31
Installed using .zip file dragged and dropped into MM

Note: The recommendation by MOST mod authors is to actually install SP Controller LASTHowever, one of the mods I use asks that it be installed first (Please don't ask me which one, It was well over a year ago and I don't immediately recall). Use your best judgement for your build. This order works for my current setup with no obvious issues.

2.  EGM - Expanded Galaxy Mod - Version 1.15 (Version 1.16 should work equally well with this tutorial)
Installed using .zip file dragged and dropped into MM

Note: I only install DLC_MOD_EGM and DLC_MOD_EGM_Squad at this point. I install EGM Extras and Alliance Warpack later on in my load order.

3.  JohnP's Alternate MEHEM - Version 1.5
Installed via executable

At this point, with the current build I'm using, the total number of files in the
Mass Effect 3 game  directory DLC folder (including _metadata and ALL official DLC folders) should be 35.

Note: This number is helpful to be aware of should you need to reinstall your mods later on. It's quick way of determining if you forgot anything during your mod installation.

4. If you use any of the following mods in combination, you have more work to do. Please refer to my following tutorials for guidance:

Note: As a reminder, I suggest you make all alterations to the DLC mod folders within the MM mods folder. We'll be applying the mods to the main game DLC directory in step 6.

5.  Insure ME3's DLC folder (typically located in <Drive>:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Mass Effect 3\BIOGame\DLC) only has the official DLC and vanilla folders. If there are any mods in this directory, delete them. If you followed this tutorial's instructions, all your personal mod alterations should have been made in the MM mods folder.

6.  In MM, select each mod one at a time and click apply. This will apply the mod DLC folders to the above game directory. These versions should have all of your personal edits and compatibility fixes.

Note: it's always a good idea to make sure your .pcc edits transferred over properly before continuing. Better safe than sorry.

7.  For SP Controller users only! Build your GUI compatibility patch through MM and apply it once it's constructed.

Important Note: If you intend to use Same Gender Romances in conjunction with ME3Recalibrated,  EGM Extras, or Restored Zaeed Conversation, you'll need to complete the following tutorial before proceeding:

Same Gender Romance Compatibility for ME3Recalibrated and EGM Extras (Liara Conversation Only)

8.  Enable all mods in ME3's DLC folder, if they are not already.

9.  "Run AutoTOC" under MM's "Tools" tab.

Part 3
Extracting DLCs:

Note: This part can be skipped if you have absolutely zero desire to alter textures. ALOT users MUST complete this!

Show

Reminder! Make sure ALL of your mods are enabled, including conflicting ones. If they are not, ALOT will not apply textures to any of your disabled mods and any textures trees will exclude those mods, making it impossible alter their textures in later steps.

1. Download Mass Effect Modder (It will be referred to as MEM for the remainder of this tutorial) - praise be to aquadran!
Note: Here's a handy dandy MEM guide if you are entirely unfamiliar with it. Do NOT use ME3Explorer to extract DLCs, It's not good at it.

!!!!!!!!STOP!!!!!!!!!!!
REMOVE TEXTURES SCAN FILE BEFORE USING MEM

If you try and use MEM with an old Textures Scan File present, you will likely screw up your install and have to start over.

DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. Just in case you missed it: Open MEM, Click on the Mass Effect 3 tab and select "Removes Textures Scan File" from the drop down menu.

3. Once MEM's Textures Scan File is removed, Click on the Mass Effect 3 tab and select "Extract DLCs" from the drop down menu.
Note: This unpacks all the DLC's so texture editing can commence later on. This process takes just under 3 minutes to complete.

Part 4
PCC Mod Installation:

Spoiler:
Show

1. Install .pcc Mod file(s) to <Drive>:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Mass Effect 3\BIOGame\CookedPCConsole
Note: Make backups of your vanilla files in case you make a mistake and need to revert back.

My pcc mod file replacements are in the spoilers below:
Spoiler:
Show

Note: Typically I always defer to a mod author's install instructions, but the pcc mods I use are older and the instructions are equally outdated.
Use your best judgment when installing your own. If you're installing the ones I use, stick with me and you'll be fine
 ;)

.pcc edits from Buff Female Shepard Body and Buff FemShep Tank Top
Note: The Spectre version .tpf of the tank top does not work. goddessmcgeek made a working .tpf which you can download here.

BIOG_HMF_ARM_CTH_R.pcc ------> Buff Shep Tank Top + Personal Combat Fatigue Edit
BIOG_HMF_ARM_NKD_R.pcc ------> Buff Shep
BIOG_HMF_ARM_SHP_R.pcc ------> Buff Shep

Note:Textures for these will be installed in
Part 5 and Part 6 of this tutorial.

2. "Run AutoTOC" under MM's "Tools" tab

3.  If you intend on using ALOT and/or plan to replace any vanilla textures/meshes, continue on to Part 5. If this does not apply to you, you can go enjoy your game :) KILL SOME REAPERS FOR ME!

Part 5
ALOT Installation:

Spoiler:
Show
Reminder! Make sure ALL of your mods are enabled, including conflicting ones. If they are not, ALOT will not apply textures to any of your disabled mods and any textures trees will exclude those mods, making it impossible to alter their textures.

Note: Casual Liara users! You will receive errors after building your texture tree(s). This is normal and was done intentionally by the mod author. The only errors you should receive should be related to this mod. So double check!

1.  Using
MEM, click on the Mass Effect 3 tab and select "Texture Manager" to scan game files and build texture tree.
Note: MEM is infinitely more efficient than ME3Explorer is at building texture trees. ALOT and Creeperlava strongly discourage using ME3Explorer at all. It's important you are aware of this, because my tutorial uses ME3Explorer anyway. This means you should complain to me if something doesn't work, not them!

2.  After MEM is done building it's tree, Install/Open ME3Explorer - praise be to
SirCxyrtyx (aka Cxyrtyx), Giftfish (aka moho25), and all these beautiful people!

3.  Open Texplorer. It will either prompt you to build a tree (if none exists) or you will need to select "
Rebuild Database" from the upper tabs.
Note: Make sure you have Mass Effect 3 selected in the upper right corner of the Texplorer window.

4.
Open and update ALOT - praise be to Creeperlava!
Note: Turn off your antivirus/firewall software before running ALOT installation.

5.  Download any of the recommended texture files you desire and drag/drop the .zip files directly into the installer

6.  Drag and drop additionally desired .mod, .mem,  and .tpf files directly into the ALOT installer.
Note: You'll have to repeat this step every time you wish to install ALOT in the future as it only saves textures it recognizes/endorses.

The files I personally add in this manner are listed in the spoiler below:
Spoiler:
Show

1. Allers_Mesh_ELE.mod
2. allers_tex.tpf
3. Ash Legacy No Casino Edits
4. Buff Fem Tank Top.tpf  -----> Note: This is not completely installed - further instructions in Part 6.
5. LegacyAsh_v3_2017.tpf
6. Lens Flare Remover.tpf
7. me3_char_tex_overhaul_fix.tpf
8. New_Crew_Outfit_v2_-_Drengin.tpf

7.  Run ALOT installation
Note: Turn your antivirus/firewall back on after install

8.  "Run AutoTOC" under ModManager's "Tools" tab.

!!!!!!!!WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!
Rebuilding Texture Trees after ALOT is installed will prevent you from using the ALOT installer in the future without a complete reinstall of your game!

Any changes to the game files
(excluding most texture edits) will also prevent you from using ALOT with your current build!

Keep this in mind if you feel the need to tinker with anything afterwards!
