What is this mod ?
ALOT is a one-step download to upgrade Mass Effect 2's graphics to today's standards. 1200-ish high resolution (2K, 4K) textures have been carefully chosen from the works of other mod authors or crafted by myself. We have strived to achieve the best look possible, while remaining very close to the vanilla (default) style.
Among many others, this project includes HR textures for : squad mates, environments, cerberus, geth, quarians, reapers, the galaxy map, NPCs, weapons, armors, et cætera.

If you want the technical detail :
- We compiled hundreds of mods made by various mod authors into a single, exhaustive package. No need to scour the Internet for hours, we've done it for you :).
- We created a complete database of "portable" (ie identical) textures between the 3 Mass Effect games. This means comparing through various means about 44 000 textures.
- Bioware downscaled many textures and upscaled others throughout the development of the 3 games (eg a texture could be 1024px in ME1, 512px in ME2, 256px in ME3). We normalized these textures (same, highest resolution everywhere).
- Some of the original, not downscaled textures are still present in the game files (promo textures). We restored those we could find. Jack's
face, some of Shepard's armor, and more, benefit from this.
- We made plenty of new textures. More to come in the regular updates :). Texture makers are welcome to participate !

0. First of all, read the FAQ for general advice and to avoid frequently seen issues.
Install content mods before ALOT (ie DLC mods, No MiniGames mod, Controller mod, etc).
1. Download the main file and the update, if there is any.
2. Follow the overly detailed installation tutorial available here. Done.

3. (Not required, but strongly recommended) Install the Addon. Download the optional file, and follow the guide.
4. (Definitely optional) Install any other texture mods you want, after ALOT (use MEM to install).
If ME2 doesn't run from Origin, try running Origin as admin.

Further Graphical Improvements

ALOT 2017 Addon.
Some mods can't be included in the main package because of permission issues. However, I made a batch file that will guide you in their installation. Think of it as a modpack. Both Nexus and Ottemis have confirmed they see no issue with this. The Addon includes a few dozen more textures and it is highly recommended to install it to get the most out of A.L.O.T.

Better Hair Mod.
This mod simply improves the hair texture. It's not included in the Addon because it's not exactly vanilla-friendly (the hair is very smooth), but I do recommend installing it. See FAQ #2 for a tutorial.

ME2 INI Settings.
These are automatically applied by MEM. Full list available here.

NVIDIA / AMD Control Panel.
Open your control panel, modify the settings as you see fit. The truly essential settings to enable are Anti-Aliasing and Triple Buffering. Most of the other useful settings available are already modified by MEM, directly in the game's INI settings.

ENBs, SweetFX and other graphical enhancement tools.
Here are some examples : SweetFX and ENB for ME2, Just ENB and SweetFX for ME2, others can be found here. Be wary, some of these tools were reported to crash the game. It's undetermined what the cause of it is.

1. General Advice
  • Pirated copies of ME2 and its DLCs may or may not work, in any case, they won't be supported.
  • Don't install ME2 in the 'Program Files (x86)' folder (causes read-only and UAC issues). Instead, use either a separate partition (recommended), or another folder in your C: drive. If you did install ME2 in that directory, run MEM as administrator.
  • Turn off your antivirus when installing textures with MEM. Antiviruses (especially the free ones) can greatly slow down MEM.
  • Turn Origin's auto update setting off. Otherwise, Origin can overwrite modded game files with the originals without asking. If that happens, reinstall everything.
  • If ME2 doesn't run from Origin, try running Origin as admin.

Is ALOT compatible with [insert popular mod here] ?
There are no known incompatibilities with any other mods. Just make sure to install them in the correct order.
Install all content mods (eg ME2Controller, etc) before ALOT. Check the "Skip Vanilla Check" checkbox in MEM when you install ALOT.
I've seen a few "patches" between ALOT and other mods pop up on Nexus. These mods are dangerous since they need to be updated for each version of ALOT and the other mod that is patched. Don't use them, just follow the installation order.
Install all texture and meshes mods (ie TPF, DDS or MOD files) after ALOT, so they'll overwrite ALOT.

3. How do I make a backup ?
To make a backup of your vanilla copy of ME2 (recommended !), copy the CookedPC and DLC folder, located in [Mass Effect 2 directory]\BioGame, and paste them somewhere else (outside of the game directory !). To restore to vanilla, overwrite the game with the backup. You can do the same to backup a modded game.

4. Texture skipped. Texture xxx is not present in your game setup
You are missing one or more DLCs. If you're not sure which DLCs you have, there is a list of them here.

5. Problem with access to file Texture2D.tfc
This issue happens when a previously modded game hasn't been properly reverted to vanilla before modding it again. The best solution is to simply reinstall the game (ie remove the game folder entirely and intall it anew), preferably to a separate partition or hard drive, and start again.

6. Microsoft .NET Framework Unhandled Exception
If you get a crash saying "Access to the path ... was denied" when installing MEM files, try turning off your antivirus and trying again. The Avira antivirus, in particular, was reported to break the normal functioning of MEM. I have had no issues with ESET, personally.

7. Crashes, freezes
ALOT shouldn't cause any CTDs (Crash to Desktop). However, here are a few workarounds for crashes encountered by users.
  • If you pirated ME2, cracked EXEs can cause this type of problem with modded games.
  • Running the game in windowed mode, adding the command line argument "-nomoviestartup" to the exe was reported to fix some CTDs (for example, crashes in the Kasumi DLC).
  • Disabling Motion Blur (in the GamerSettings.ini) fixed crashes in some DLCs.
  • Disabling ReShade / SweetFX / other fixed crashes for some people.
  • Flawless Widescreen was reported as a potential cause for crashes.

Adding DLCs after the installation
If you install a DLC after having installed ALOT, the textures of ALOT won't retroactively apply to that DLC. You have to vanilla your game completely, then redo the installation with your new DLC installed.

9. "DLC not authorized" error message on startup
Each time you launch the game, ME2 verifies that the content of the DLCs hasn't been modified. To fix this, use a DLC patch like this one (extract the archive, copy-paste-overwrite the 2 DLLs where your game was installed, in the Binaries folder).

10. MEM versus Texmod
Texmod loads all the textures directly in your RAM, whereas MEM replaces the textures directly in the main game. So, with Texmod, you get a veeery long initial loading screen (30mn+ depending on your HDD and amount of mods). You're also limited to 4 GB of mods. With MEM, you shouldn't experience loading screens longer than a few minutes, at most : the game only loads the textures needed for the level you are entering, not the whole game.

11. MEM versus ME3Explorer
MEM is a tool used to browse / modify textures and meshes. ME3Explorer is a toolkit for modders.
MEM is built for speed and fixes many issues ME3Explorer texture installation has (list of ME3Explorer known issues). Thus, it should be preferred to ME3Explorer for texture and meshes installation.

12. Some textures aren't high-resolution / still look like vanilla
There are over 11 000 textures in ME2. ALOT is huge, but not that huge. I'm always working on more textures, but I prefer quality over quantity, so it's a slow process. Feel free to make some textures yourself and share them, to fill the gaps :).
