Skyrim Special Edition

Skyrim Unbound is definitely not the most compatible mod. By reading this article you will reduce the chance that something won't work.

General Info

What SUR edits (in case you don't know how to use xEdit but still want to approximately estimate compatibility with other mods):
Spoiler:
Show
SUR edits the following things and will likely conflict with mods that edit them:
  • The first chapters of the main quest up to The Way Of The Voice aka MQ105
  • Whiterun thaneship
  • What happens when you kill a dragon
  • How word walls work
  • "Player NPC"
  • Imperials/Stormcloak joining dialogues
  • The Jagged Crown quest and dialogues
  • The Whispering Door quest start dialogues
  • Various other quest and non-quest dialogues, for example dialogues referering to you as a traveler/visitor of a city, editing which is needed for the Local Inhabitant feature
  • Loading screens about dragons, dragonborn and shouts
  • Durnehviir quest
  • Some other stuff

What this mod doesn't edit:
  • Races, standing stones, spells, items, etc. themselves
  • Dragons themselves
  • Any NPCs themselves
  • "The Blessings of Nature" quest (it's only used as a condition)
  • It doesn't add or move any visible objects except for the starting room and bedrolls in the Homeless Shelter locations that are only enabled when you start there

To ensure that SUR works:

  • Check the compatibility list below. Make sure that you don't have any of the incompatible mods listed, you have all required patches, the load order of .esp/.esm/.esl plugins and the order of overwriting files are set according to the instructions.
  • If you don't know anything about xEdit, creating compatibility patches, etc., just give SUR priority over any potentially conflicting mods in both plugins (by placing Skyrim Unbound.esp after (below) them) and files (by making SUR overwrite any conflicting files from them). Skyrim Unbound heavily relies on its edits to vanilla records and scripts, therefore you must not let any other mods overwrite it unless they're compatible with Skyrim Unbound or you know what you're doing.
  • Of course, all the patches, optional plugins and addons must be placed after both Skyrim Unbound.esp and the mods that they are made for.

Note: SUR comes with SkyUILib files: all of the .swf files included and UILIB_1.pex/.psc. It's also included in many other mods, so these mods will "conflict". Actually there is no conflict, since these files are the same. You can safely overwrite SkyUILib files in any order.

Advanced compatibility questions:
  • Most mods that check if you're a thane of Whiterun require patches (for example, mods that add dialogues refering to you as a thane of Whiterun, crafting recipes that are supposed to only become available when you become a thane of Whiterun, etc.). Without patches most such mods will think that you're a thane once you absorb your first dragon soul, and that you aren't unless you do that. It's due to conditions like "if Dragon Rising quest is completed" used to check if you're a thane of Whiterun, when with Skyrim Unbound such conditions are no longer valid for checking if you're a thane. See Patching conditions for Skyrim Unbound.
  • Skyrim Unbound is compatible with any standing stone mod that doesn't edit PowerShrineScript.pex/standing stone activators to add non-vanilla spells or perks (i know no standing stone mods that do that).
  • The Disease option should work properly with vampirism overhauls. Not sure about werewolf ones.
  • Whether a mod that adds new dragons will work with the dragons delay/disabling depends on how it works. If it just adds dragons to vanilla leveled lists or implements its own system but still checks the progress of Dragon Rising quest or the things that vanilla game and Skyrim Unbound manage to delay dragons (DragonsReturned global variable for random dragons and DefaultDragonEnableMarker object reference for word wall dragons), everything will be fine. But if it implements its own spawn system that doesn't check these things, its dragons won't be affected. For example, Diverse Dragons Collection, Splendor - Dragon Variants and Bellyaches New Dragon Species (Leveled List version) are compatible.

Compatibility List

Incompatible

Compatible with patches/certain load order/certain actions

Load order:
"before SUR" - If the mod contains any plugins, these plugins should be placed before Skyrim Unbound.esp. SUR should overwrite any conflicting files (scripts) from this mod.
"after SUR" - If the mod contains any plugins, these plugins should be placed after Skyrim Unbound.esp. This mod should overwrite any conflicting files (scripts) from SUR.
not specified - load order and file overwrites don't matter if you have the patch.

  • 360 Movement Behavior - you need to save the game and load it to make it work (or better use True Directional Movement).
  • AIM FIX - Combat Camera version (its own patch) - Lite version doesn't require the patch.
  • Andrealphus' Harder Quests - Harder Thaneships (use the "Globals Only" version/file)
  • At Your Own Pace - Main Quest (has a separate version for Skyrim Unbound + after SUR)
  • At Your Own Pace - Misc (installer)
  • Audio Overhaul for Skyrim (installer)
  • Book Covers Skyrim (Updated) (installer)

  • Cutting Room Floor (installer)
  • Disparity - Player Character Class - Race and Gender Diversity (before SUR) - has conflicting options: "Your Birthsign", "Starting Outfit" and starting spells. For each one, use what you prefer - the Disparity option or the Skyrim Unbound option, and disable/don't use the other one (to disable Disparity options, the first two should be set to None/Default and no spells should be selected).
  • Diverse Character Creation (installer + before SUR)
  • Dragon Soul Absorbing More Glorious (installer + before SUR) - can be used without the original mod if you don't need its sounds, otherwise don't use its options for Miraak or Greybeards
  • Dragon War - A Dragon Overhaul (installer)
  • Even Better Quest Objectives (before SUR)
  • Favor Quests Separated (installer)

  • Immersive Loading Screens (installer)
  • Immersive World Encounters (after SUR)
  • KS Dragon Overhaul 2 (its own patch)
  • Misc Dialogue Edits (its own patch) - MDE - Save the Icerunner/At Your Own Pace: Misc patch and MDE - SUR patch must be placed before SUR - Save the Icerunner/At Your Own Pace: Misc patch
  • More Craftable Equipment (its own patch)
  • More To Say (installer)
  • Open Cities Skyrim (third-party patch)
  • Open Civil War (before SUR)

  • Requiem - The Roleplaying Overhaul (installer) - If you use both Requiem and Timing is Everything, it's enough to place Requiem-TiE patch (if there's any) after SUR, SUR-Requiem and SUR-TiE patches (you don't need to patch the Requiem-TiE patch for SUR, since the only SUR edit in 50AF1 is equivalent to one of the Requiem changes).

Patches

Open World Loot Framework Integration
Integrates the leveled lists of OWL Framework into the lists of SUR, so that you have a chance to get armors and weapons distributed via OWL framework as variants of vanilla armors and weapons (not as separate options) as your starting equipment. It also changes Studded, Iron Banded and Elven Light armor from separate options into variants of Hide/Iron/Elven since that's how OWL framework handles them.
Place this patch after the Beyond Skyrim Morrowind - Bonemold Weapon Pack addon if you use it.
