Turns those useless lanterns you can pick up all over Skyrim into usable lanterns that can be used as an alternative for a torch. Vanilla misc object lanterns can be equipped to any hand and can be used like a torch. Unlike torch, lanterns are infinite and never go out.
The original LE Mod was created by hifoo. The existing SE version has an old plugin form version, so I decided to port it properly. I've also made some improvements:
- ESL-flagged the plugin
- Removed Idle Animation record from the plugin, because Update.esm already does the same and even better
- Integrated WACCF changes (the lantern value and weight)
- Added fixed mesh by CemKey that was posted in the original mod post
- Removed the torch burning sound from the lantern
- Added consistency patches for a lot of lighting mods to make the lantern lighting color match the torch lighting
- Added an option to replace guard torches with lanterns (made by aproco)
- Added an option to revert animations to vanilla using DAR or OAR (lanterns use torch animations and if you have mods that replace them, they may look weird with lanterns)
- Added a preset for Immersive Equipment Displays (with a version for Immersive Equipment Displays - unequip when nude) that disables the torch display for lantern, so that you don't see a floating lantern in front of you.
- You can block with lanterns and that looks weird
- Stolen lanterns are not marked as "stolen" (but you still get a bounty)
- If you put lanterns from your inventory into a container or an NPC inventory with lanterns that never were in your inventory, they will be in two different stacks
Install with your mod-manager.
For Immersive Equipment Displays users: To apply the IED preset, open the IED menu, in the Display Manager window select the "Usable Lantern" preset and click Merge on both Global > Player and Global > NPC tabs. If you use the version for Immersive Equipment Displays - unequip when nude, you must apply the "unequip when nude" preset first, and then "Usable Lantern - unequip torch when nude".
I also highly recommend installing Proper Mod-Added Torch Support, since it also applied to the lantern from this mod.
Compatibility
This mod uses a standalone lantern mesh, so lantern mesh replacers won't apply to the usable lantern. It uses vanilla lantern textures, so if you have any retexture for the vanilla lantern mesh the usable lantern will also use it.
A patch for SMIM lantern mesh is avialable.
Place Usable lantern.esp after WACCF and Requiem.
If lanterns are not usable, try placing Usable lantern.esp lower in the load order, then drop and take again your lanterns.
The "Lighting" options in the installer are consistency patches (they don't resolve any actual conflicts). You can select any option, but it is recommended to select the one for your lighting mod (if you have multiple, for the one placed last in your load order).
The installer contains lighting options that edit lantern lighting parameters to match torches with the corresponding lighting mods installed. You can select any option, but it is recommended to select the one for your lighting mod (if you have multiple, for the last one in the load order).
In the installer there's a preset for Immersive Equipment Displays that disables the torch display for lanterns so that you don't see a floating lantern in front of you, there's also a version for the Immersive Equipment Displays - unequip when nude preset. This preset is not needed and not compatible with Missile's Immersive Equipment Display Presets if you use the Misc Items module from it.
