About this mod

This is a house. Sort of. You'll be living outside, but with a roof. And some walls.

13 December 2022 NOTICE ON COMING UPDATE/FIXES:
I am currently working on updating and cleaning up this house, specifically to make it compatible with Use Those Blankets (it isn't, at present). This will require reconfiguring the beds and tweaking the Seasons ini settings so hang on a bit.

To Start:

It isn’t what one would normally prefer in a custom player house, but this one may not be right for players who like to store their followers in their house. There are accommodations available but the terrain is not always cooperative. They may get stuck in the floor boards, not sandbox properly or not follow at all.

It also isn’t suitable for players who enjoy displaying their collection of forks or what-not.

Basically, the only upside is the view.

Location:

The homestead is located in Ivarstead. From the town, take the bridge to the south going towards Riften. After crossing the bridge, turn left immediately and track the path along the riverside. If you have Autumngate installed, you will walk past its fishing dock. Keep walking along the bank of the river until you hit a light post. Look up. The house is probably visible from there. There will be a path leading upwards to the right. At the top, turn left.

Once you find it, there will be a fast-travel marker on the deck for quick access later.

The house will be boarded up and dirty once you get there. The house acquisition process is exceedingly lame. No dragons to slay, no backstory, no mystery to solve. But you will need cheese to move in.

Known Issues

Staedtler Homestead is basically just a fairly elaborate camp site. I just picked up modding as a hobby so please consider it as an ongoing experiment. The house was made this way because big windows with a view of High Hrothgar is something everyone should have.

Unfortunately, this means there will be some weirdness. There will be grass clipping from the world space of Cell 21, -18. I will not fix this. Skyrim grass
is a terrifying thing that I dare not meddle with. Later, when I have learned more.

Seasons, rain, winter and snow:

Rain: Being essentially outside in Tamriel space, there may be rain under the roof. In my fairly surrender-inducing research, I was led to believe that rain effects recognize collision planes as of runtime version whatever (released long ago, in ancient times). Floors will know about this, but rugs apparently do not. They will look wet in the rain. I vaguely remember some setting in ENB or what-not, I just haven't learned it. Or maybe object mesh edits. I’ll figure that out later.

Snow: Objects under the Staedtler roof will not be blanketed in snow if you are using Seasons of Skyrim and all the mods that use it. Fortunately, powerofthree's nifty tool has a blacklisting feature that has been exceedingly useful for this kind of building.

Enemies: You will probably be attacked and have camp-level protection from various randomly-spawning enemies. There were no dragon markers from
the vanilla game in that area so one is not likely to land nearby but it still may burn it down if one attacks Ivarstead. That can't be helped because I absolutely refuse to alter the terrain or the pre-existing markers in it or its surrounds.

Follower behaviour: Since the homestead will behave like a campsite, your followers (if their AI has this feature) will sandbox as if they are camped out. I have tested it with vanilla Meeko and the mod Kaidan. The dog was a disaster and kept getting stuck in the floor boards. The Kaidan one went swimmingly well. Except for occassionally disappearing under the floorboards, he settled nicely, interacted with the furniture, workbenches and idle markers as expected. I had issues with the Nebarra one, in that he would not sandbox even after being told to live there. I have never been able to make this mod sandbox in a custom location so this might just be my specific config.

Your follower milleage will absolutely vary.

3. NPCs Getting stuck: The area is peppered with collision planes, boxes and invisible walls to prevent NPCs from getting stuck under the house. If it happens to your NPCs/Followers, know that I have done everything I know to do--editing the navmesh, blocking the zones with collision objects that go all the way down to the core of Nirn.

If you suffer this issue and know how to fix it, please teach me!

3.Stairs and floorboards: The stepsleading up from the path to the deck is problematic for NPCs and they may have to be led like tethered goats up the steps. I have not been able to figure out a remedy.

4. Lifeout of doors: The campsite nature of this house also makesit weird in a downpour. Splashes of Storm makes splashes in certain parts. Rare, but it happens. The effect is mostly just visual--Frostfall does not seem to punish your PC's stats for it. Yes, the roof has the proper collision mesh, backstopped by a separate collision box just to make doubly sure in case the game fails to recognize the roofs. It still sometimes doesn't.

Furthermore, because the house is not in an interior cell, mods like Wet And Cold will decide to make surfaces under the roof look wet. Followers will also wear rain gear inside. I ended up spending a bunch of time trying to figure out WetAnd Cold instead of completing the house. In the end,I removed WAC from my modlist until I've learned more. I still use SOS, SOS, SOS and SOS, however. They all work with the outdoor nature of this homestead.

5.Lights:  In three locations (the crafting area in the interior cell, in the bathroom and upstairs in the loft), the lighting will appear to flicker. This is actually not a flicker from dueling light objects. There is a trigger that swtiches these three light sources on approach and exit from the trigger box. I was learning the script, I may have gotten carried away using it thrice.

6. World Spaces: Other than reconstructing the navmesh in Cell 21, -18, nothing has been removed in the worldspace cell. The pre-existing trees were moved, some plants, rocks and dirt cliffs were added and road chunks were placed on a pre-existing path to the river. I have not touched the water in
any way. If you see errors there, that is not due to this mod.

7. Interior Cell: Having said all that, you'll be relieved to know that there IS an interior cell. In its void, all the necessary objects and markers have been stored to make it compatible with Hearthfire and Multiple Adoptions. I have not tested and have zero interest in testing it with actual NPCs. But the cell does have the ability to store children (i.e. there can be two appropriately-sized beds in it as well as all the things needed to get the "Bless this home" spell).

7. The Bedroom/Arcane Lab: If you pick the Arcane Lab option, it will have the ability to set up a futon on the floor for sleeping. The futon will, in turn, have the roll-up option for when you wake up. But if you fail to clear it and decide to change the room setting while the futon is still laid out, it will persist and clip through the other objects. Just roll it back up using the activator attached to the Dark Elf Lamp on the floor. It will become available again if you go back to the Arcane Lab setting.

I do not know if you can make the cat stay.

Limitations:

There are no weapons or trophy displays.

I have Keep it Clean installed and was unable to bathe in the river. I don't know why and I do not want to mess with Realistic Waters Two. The river itself is also not in Tamriel Cell 21,-18where this homestead is located. I did not touch it at all. If there are other issues, it will not be due to this mod.

The storage spaces are safe, though. I decided against restricting specific containers with formlists because that will just add unnecessary complexity. Fortunately, it will be easy to sort items by storing them in the appropriately-labeled containers.

All limitations that apply to campsites apply to this homestead.

Misc Notes:

If you have a bathing mod installed, the bathroom is set up to run the relevant script. The activator is an actorzone trigger so it does not need to be manually activated by the player. Just go to your inventory and use soap to trigger the script. If you look closely, there is water on the floor, manually placed as high as possible so that the script will detect that your PC is standing in it.

The toilet is a chair. I thought of scripting a spell that will give some miniscule buff from sitting on the throne for some business. But I play with Requiem and, as a modding sub-plebe, I didn't want to have to open that can of worms until I have learned more.

Features:

Nothing phantasmagoric. Poke around, there are setup options. There is a special box for cheeses because cheeses are good. And baklava, even
though you can not eat them. To be able to do so, get Jaffa'sBaklava Mod.

There is a junk drop-off point outside the Warmaiden's that is linked to the homestead. I know, I know. It feels like a cheat if you are hardcoring with Requiem with a carryweight limit of 15 and no fast-travel. Just...you know, don't use it, then.

Imade fried eggs. I know how to make it into a food object in CK but I have not contemplated how doing that could cascade into the collapse of the universe. Or something. So much to learn.

Compatibility Issues

This mod is incompatible with any other mods that alter Tamriel Cell 21,-18. I have restricted my worldspace edits to this cell and did
not touch the adjacent ones in any way. If you have a mod installed that conflicts with this one, simply remove Staedtler Homestead from
your modlist and play as usual.

Credits

Darkfox127 for his fantastically clear modding tutorials and scripts you can learn from and use. Modders who teach are in a league of their own. In that league, Darkfox127 is in a league of his own. Tip: when you watch his tutorials, read the comments! More learning bits there.

Also, in case this is news, BlenderGuru exists. And yes, it does take a 12-part video tolearn how to use Blender to model a donut. Any tutorial purporting to teach you in two minutes will just be showing off how they useBlender.

Thanks to ousnius for Outfit Studio. This tool is severely underrated for the magic it letsyou do from direct static mesh editing to bridging the Blender-NifSkope gap. And also for, omg, SSENIF Optimizer.

Special thanks to TechAngel85 for nudging my train to another track in my quest to prevent the "indoor" from being blanketed in snow. Also thanks to powerofthree for creating the tool that gave Staedtler to pretend it isn't outside.

Jaffa for the Baklava mesh and texture
SD’sVanilla Table Replacers for the texture files
Tamira and Stroti for tons of things--meshes and textures

Unique Assets

All objects I made for this house is packed into a modders' resource pack, freely available for download and use. You can download it from this page:

PaganoWagano Resources

It is also possible I made things that already existed in the game or in other mods, like yet another cup or somesuch. I really don't care; I enjoy learning
Blender even though I gave up trying to figure out the nif export plugin and now use Outfit Studio instead.

There are notes included in the asset folders for explanations. Feel free to teach me.
