Winterhold to me is the saddest "town" in Skyrim - a paltry four buildings. Many mods over the years have (successfully) sought to address this. This is my take on it. This mod is designed in very limited scope, not touching anything beyond the footprints of the four ruined vanilla buildings in Winterhold. I intend for folks to use it alongside other Winterhold mods that add walls and ruins to the city - or (as I personally do) along ClefJ's Winterhold - which does a fantastic job of overhauling the town. Running it alongside these other mods will maintain the "ruined" feeling referenced in vanilla dialogue, while adding new services and npcs to populate the town, but not too many services or too much of a population!
The mod is set up to use either vanilla meshes for the farmhouses (in which case they will shift appropriately according to any farmhouse mesh/texture replacers you have installed, to match the other buildings in Winterhold) or new meshes to match ClefJ's Winterhold aesthetic. Screenshots are taken using the ClefJ's Winterhold version. If anyone wants to take screenshots using the vanilla version, please do so and I'll feature them.
Thane Bjorkild and his wife Eddrun live in the larger of the three added houses. They are wealthy by Winterhold standards, and serve as local minor nobles that owe allegiance to Jarl Korir.
Olga lives in and manages Olga's Ointments, a poorly stocked herbalist shoppe. She's not much of an alchemist, though she's able to brew a cure disease or restore health/magicka/stamina potion or two.
Velka lives in the smaller house behind the inn - her husband is away at war and she finds herself a bit aimless.
Keldir lives in a (still ruined) house, which he has partially repaired into a hunter shack. He uses the rest of the house to store and prepare his kills - which he provides to the Frozen Hearth (he is intentionally not a merchant). He's not a particularly good hunter (don't expect any bear or wolf trophies) but he can kill a deer. Yes, he's cold. Yes, his life sucks.
All of the NPCs are Nords - this is to represet Winterhold's culture and history as one of the oldest and most "Nordic" cities in Skyrim.
Compatibilities / Patches
I will make a Fomod for this when there are a few more patches.
These mods are excellent options to pair with mine, and are compatible (or will swiftly be made so with a patch when I'm notified):
ClefJ Winterhold - Compatible - Use the ClefJ version of this mod
JK's Skyrim - Compatible
Winterhold Expanded Ruins - Compatible
Various Winterhold gate/wall/ruins mods - Compatible unless they move the locations of the vanilla ruined houses
Spaghetti's Cities AIO - Compatible with Patch in optional files
Spaghetti's Winterhold - Compatible with Patch in optional files
Any/All Winterhold College mods - Compatible
Winterhold Bathhouse - Compatible
Winterhold Docks - Compatible
This will be a substantial patch/overhaul, but I might do it at some point:
Cities of the North Winterhold - Needs Patching to change this mod's buildings to COTN / update navmesh
These mods already do what this mod does, are much larger in scope, are not compatible, and will not be patched by me (though, I encourage anyone who wants to make a patch to do so if they wish). They are all very good mods, and I have used most of them at one point or another - each worth checking out as an alternative / bigger overhaul to this one.
The Great City of Winterhold - Incompatible
Anna's Winterhold Restored - Incompatible
Winterhold Restored - Incompatible
Winterhold Fully Restored - Incompatible
Kingdom of Winterhold - Incompatible
These mods use the same buildings and are incompatible (though, I encourage anyone who wants to make a patch if they wish)
Winterhold The Bubbling Brew - Incompatible
Winterhold is Rebuilding - Incompatible
East Empire Expansion CC - Incompatible - I do not have this CC and thus cannot patch it
These are mods with a smaller impact on Winterhold's exterior, checked for compatibility and patched as necessary:
Lux - Compatible, consistency patch in optional files (replace when proper Lux patch is made)
Lux Via - Compatible
Lux Orbis - Compatible
Interesting NPCs - Compatible with Patch in optional files
CFTO Winterhold - Compatible
AI Overhaul - Compatible - Patch in optional files will add flee behavior to NPCs
Immersive Citizens - Compatible
All screenshots were taken running this mod alongside ClefJ's Winterhold, Lux/Lux Via/Lux Orbis, Cathedral Weathers and Rudy ENB for Cathedral Weathers. The NPC looks in my screenshots are as they will appear in your game - though they will use whatever bodies and textures you have set up.
This mod was created with the 1.640 version of the Creation Kit so is compatible with all SE/AE versions of Skyrim. It is not ESP-FE flagged and should not be made ESP-FE (this would break all the patches). This mod has no running scripts or quests. I give full permission to anyone to merge this mod with any other mod and release that version, thereby saving an esp slot for that load order. You'll need to check permissions on whatever mod you merge this with, however.
