You can finally return to Omega!

HISTORY

Bioware initially planned for Omega station to be a hub world during the alpha/beta script writing stage of Mass Effect 3. Unfortunately, the plan was cut during the development phase. After the Priority: Omega mission, players were supposed to be able to explore the station as a new hub area, which would have provided direct access to several new missions such as Grissom Academy, a mission where you'd fight Zaeed on a alien world, and there were plans for side missions set beyond the Omega-4 relay to loot lost pirate treasure and other ideas.

When they cut the mission, they cut the hub and the side missions, Zaeed's mission was rewritten into a non-combat affair, and Grissom was granted by Traynor. We ended up getting a DLC instead, which really didn't compare, and that was that.

The hub was gone.


FOUNDATION

This project is not the hub that Bioware intended, and it does not have those missions that were lost, but we're providing a new foundation to build upon. To do this, we have ported the hub areas from Mass Effect 2, including the VIP area of Afterlife. Although this is currently pretty basic, the aim is to edit the BioA and BioD files in such a way that encourages ease of modding for anyone who wants to do so. The base files will be open source at the 1.0.0 release, so anyone can tinker with the files if they want.

My hope, is that different modders will work together to create content that makes visiting this hub worthwhile, so that instead of us merely spreading content from the Citadel out to Omega, that we truly begin to add to the game. By doing this, the hub should feel as if it truly belongs in the game, and if we are very lucky, perhaps people will come together to recreate some of those missing side missions.

This is an early alpha, so the contents of the mod are very slim. At this time, you can do the following on Omega:

  • Speak to Aria in Afterlife
  • Tear up the dance floor in lower Afterlife
  • Visit Harrot's store
  • Visit Batarian State Arms
  • Hand in the Omega: Mechanic quest

Over time we will add more interactions from Mass Effect 2, and hopefully others will add fresh content to go along with these. There is no time frame for additional content.

INSTALLATION:

Using Mod Manager, then drag and drop the archive into Mod Manager to import it. After that all you need to do is apply the mod.

FAQ:

"Why can't I access the hub?"

At this time, only Expanded Galaxy Mod and Spectre Expansion Mod are set up to allow entry to the station, but that will change soon as we plan to include a galaxy map edit for those who do not use EGM. This'll arrive in the coming weeks.


"Why are there weird terrain issues?"

Porting Omega from LE2 to LE3 is difficult. Many materials do not exist in the third game that do in the second, and sometimes there are issues with lighting. These are gradually being worked on, but for now you'll see some objects that glow yellow when they shouldn't, are pitch black or don't show correctly. Eventually these will be sorted out, but it's slow work.


"Is this the same mod that was made for the Original Trilogy?"

It isn't, but its close. The idea this time is to port Omega from Mass Effect 2: Legendary Edition, and change it to feel like it belongs in Mass Effect 3, but to have it as a mostly blank slate that other modders can build upon rather than just a small group. The hope is that it'll eventually feel on par with the vanilla hub areas on the Citadel, and then modders can edit it to their hearts content.

This idea may change if people get fired up to do something more with it, but right now it's just a port with a few minor updates that suit ME3


"What happened to Kenn's Salvage?"

The store no longer exists, but all the files for the store will be into a separate mod file that other mods can overwrite. The default for Omega Hub will be a store that you cannot access, and if you use Expanded Galaxy Mod then you'll get to see Morlan. What other mods choose to do with it is up to them, they're entirely free to do what they want with it.


"Is this mod linked with the Diversity Mod Projects?"

LE3 Diversification Project will edit this area in its mod, but no, this mod is intended more like the foundation for future modding, rather than a specific part of an existing mod.


"What do you have planned for the future?

Omega Hub is a large project, so we have decided to release it as an alpha before we expand it further. Here are some of the things we're aiming to release in future patches:

- Restore barman interactions so Shepard can get drunk
- Replace Marshes sign for Batarian State Arms
- Port over arrival and departure FMVs from LE2
- Port the batarian mechanic quest from Omega DLC to the hub, to give it some content. This will be locked behind a plot that other mods can use to activate it.
