As the name and the short blurb imply, this mod aims to take a new approach to customizing the dialogue box by reflecting the current weather and time of day.
At the moment, there's a grand total of eight different portrait backgrounds: Sunny, rainy and snowy days have their own unique day and night portrait backgrounds. The mod switches between the day and night versions once the in-game clock reaches 5 PM and you change the map you're on (so when you leave the bus stop and enter the town, for example).

Additionally, there are background for the sewers as well as caves such as the mines or the Skull Cavern. Because that isn't enough, though, there's also a special overlay when you're indoors: a comically big window that shows the current weather. If you reach a certain blue gentleman on Ginger Island, you might even be treated to another special background...

The gap between the portrait and the box containing their name has always annoyed me just as much as some of the commenters. Thankfully, there's an update for Dialogue Display Framework and I finally figured out how to make a content pack for it thanks to its author MangusuPixel!

The pack itself is pretty simple – all it does is move the name upwards so there's no more awkward gap. To use it, simply make sure you've got the updated Dialogue Display Framework installed. That's it! I'd heavily recommend using it, but it's obviously up to you. If you notice something looking off, please don't hesitate to let me know!



In addition to the portrait backgrounds, there's also a new style for the borders of the dialogue box with rounded corners that also change their color to fit the current weather. If you don't like this change, though, you can use GMCM to edit the config.json file that'll be created once you've run the game with this mod once. Seriously, please get GMCM. It makes things much easier.

The config that's responsible for the borders is called "Border Style" and can be set to three different values. It defaults to "Dynamic" that changes the borders to a new design with rounded corners and dynamically changes their color to fit the current weather/time varuation. If you'd rather have a constantly brown border with the new rounded corners, you can set it to "Brown". If you'd rather see the base game wooden frame or want to use another UI mod's edits, "Vanilla" is the config you want. Additionally, if you dislike the indoors overlay, simply untick the check box (or manually change "true" to "false" in the JSON file using a text editor) for "Indoors Overlay".

For the new CC part of the mod in version 1.3, there are two new configs. "Dynamic CC Background" is another true/false option that's set to true by default. If you dislike it for whatever reason, you can turn it off. Additionally, each CC interface comes in two different versions that you can choose from. The default version ("Background") is based ony Changing Skies' portrait backgrounds and prominently features the sky (or a cave or the sewers) along with appropriate decoration (clouds, rain drops, you name it). If you prefer the old ornate leaves, you can set this config to "Border" and you'll get a sky-inspired background with a colored leaf border instead of these decorations. For a preview, check the last screenshot!

One last config is for (makeshift) compat between my DDF patch and Farmer Portraits. If you check the post by Magoozor in the posts section, you'll see the problem and see my short explanation. Short version: If you can live with the gap and not having the indoors overlay, set "Farmer Portraits BG Fix" to true and make sure you've got custom backgrounds enabled in Farmer Portraits' own config. This way, you'll at least be able to read your farmer's name. We can only wait for the frameworks' authors to fix this little problem, but please don't harass them.



The mod should be compatible with hopefully all other big UI mods – it'll replace other portrait backgrounds and optionally their dialogue box frame. If you find one that's not supported, you can make a so-called false dependency yourself. Open this mod's manifest, find the "template" I prepared, remove the slashes and insert the other UI mod's unique ID. It's easier than it sounds, so no worries.
Additionally, I tried to work some behind-the-scenes 1.6 magic that should make Changing Skies load very late which means its changes should overwrite most if not all UI mods. That in turn means you hopefully won't have to resort to setting false dependencies yourself too often.

If you want to see some really cool cross-mod compat, I'd also recommend checking out ItsBenter's Portrait Frame Variations. Not only does it add incredibly neat map-dependent decoration, it's even got custom compat assets for Changing Skies! Use both at the same time for some incredibly immersive portraits. If you also have Dialogue Display Framework installed, make sure to also grab these temporary fix compat assets – otherwise, some of Benter's decoration might awkwardly float around.

If you want to use both the Gap-B-Gone patch for DDF and Hearts and Gifts, a pretty nifty DDF content pack that displays excatly what it says on the tin, make sure to download the optional compat patch made by MangusuPixel in the DDF update's optional files section.



  • Make sure you've installed Content Patcher.
  • Download the main zip file.
  • Extract it into your mods folder.

Optionally, if you want to use the additional Dialogue Display Framework patch (which I heavily recommend!), make sure you've got it installed, too.

If you want to uninstall it, simply delete this mod's folder.

I strongly recommend using a mod that gives the villagers seasonal outfits – otherwise, you'll end up looking at things like this. DSV in particular has tons of different outfits, including ones for rainy days, and can be configured to use both diverse and vanilla designs.
