About this mod

This mods edits the vanilla cooking and crafting recipes to make them vegan. It also changes all of the milks and eggs to vegan versions, allows the player to make artisan goods without animal ingredients and adds truffles and duck feathers as forage.

I'm currently (as of May 2023) on a break both from playing and modding Stardew Valley. I will not answer comments or upload any bug fixes or new versions of this mod for a while. You're welcome to upload your own bug fixes or version of this mod, but please credit me. Thank you! :-)

Note - this mode is made for a farm without farm animals. If you keep farm animals on your farm and download this mod they will produce the vegan versions of milks and eggs.

What this mod does:

  • Edits the vanilla cooking and crafting recipes to make them vegan. Fish, bones and monster loot are replaced with vegan alternatives.
  • Changes the milks and eggs to vegan versions. Milks are made with either hazelnuts, coconuts, rice or bananas in a oil maker and eggs are made with either hazelnuts or coconuts in a preserves jar (to make yoghurt), or apples or bananas in the cheese press (to make mashed bananas or apple sauce).
  • Adds truffles, duck feathers and rabbit feet (I recommend downloading a mod that edits them to something less macabre) as forages after you reached level 10 foraging.  Rabbit's feet (or whatever you replace them with) spawn in the forest and the secrets woods during spring and summer. Truffles spawn in the same location in fall and winter. Duck feathers spawn at the beach year round. They're not meant to spawn everyday, so you might have to play a few days before you see any of them.
  • Lets you make animal derived artisan goods with vegan ingredients. The descriptions and names are tweaked to reflect their new vegan-ness, but I haven't edited the sprites.
  • Changes some of the monster loot to be less gruesome to work better with Pacifist Valley. Bug meat becomes sticky web and bat wings becomes old marbles. Void essence, solar essence, squid ink and slime stays the same (mostly because the're not body parts).

What this mod does NOT do:
  • Change the names of recipes. I haven't found a way to do this yet. I can rename ingredients, but not the recipes themselves. If you have a solution to make it work - please let me know!
  • Remove shells or dragon teeth as crafting ingredients. They are, in a way, animal products. But the items are found, and not produced. And the animal concerned is already dead. I personally wouldn't mind picking up a nice shell I found on the beach, even if some vegans probably disagree with me. The same is true of feathers. The duck is not dead, but the feather is found and not harvested, which is why I added duck feathers as forage.
  • Change the Community Center Bundles. There's already a mod for that, Vegan Community Center Bundles.  I definitely recommend it if you want to finish the CC without animal products.
  • Make it possible to reach perfection without animal products. You still need to fish and finish the monster eradication goals. If you want to be able to go through the mines, and finish the monster eradications goals, without actually killing monsters, you can use Pacifist Valley. You can also try to remove fishing from perfection with the help of Perfection Tweaker.
  • Change the recipes from other mods. It solely changes the vanilla recipes. I'm up for making recipes in other mods vegan as well, but I'd have to check with the mod authors first. Recipes with milk, egg and honey will still be vegan with my mod (since those items are made vegan) but recipes with fish will require fish. It's fairly easy to edit recipes yourself if you want to edit something for personal use (don't release mods made with other mod author's assets without asking them first). I added some instruction in the articles section if you're curious.

How to make the artisan goods:
These should all also show up in Lookup Anything so you can always just use the lookup button on an item or machine to see what it does.
  • Cheese (made with coconuts in the cheese press)
  • Goat Cheese (made with hazelnuts in the cheese press)
  • Mayonnaise (made with any vegan milk in the mayonnaise machine)
  • Duck Mayonnaise (made with oil in the mayonnaise machine)
  • Dinosaur Mayonnaise (made with truffle oil in the mayonnaise machine)
  • Void Mayonnaise (made with wine in mayonnaise machine)
  • Roe (made with green algae in the cheese press)
  • Aged Roe (made with roe in preserves jar, same as vanilla)
  • Caviar (made with seaweed in the cheese press)
  • Wool (made with 100 fiber in the loom. If you have PPJA - Fruits and Veggies installed you can also make it with cotton)
  • Honey (made with cactus fruit in a keg)
  • Mead (made with maple syrup in a keg)

Recommended mods:

Compatibility:
  • Should work fine with mods that edit food stats, I only touch the ingredients and descriptions.
  • Works with mods that change the sprites. My mod only edits some of the sprites for the food. If another mod loads after mine and edits the same sprite theirs will override mine, but my recipe changes should still work.
  • Love of Cooking seem to be changing the Pizza, Coleslaw and Maki Roll recipe, and it overwrites my changes. Luckily they can still be made vegan since you can make cheese from nuts, mayo from vegan milk and sashimi is made from cave carrots. Otherwise this mod is compatible with LOC.
  • The forages should spawn in the relevant location in expansions mods as well. I've added compatibility for East Scarp, Ridgeside Village and Stardew Valley Expanded. I've also added compatibility for Stardew Valley Reimagined 3.
  • Anything that changes the crafting or cooking recipes will clash.
  • If you have any other Producer Framework Mods that adds producer rules for the same items and machines as my mod does, one of them will be overwritten (depending on which one loads last).

Possible Future Plans:
  • When 1.6 drops I’ll hopefully be able to change the names of the recipes.
  • I would like to do something about the fishing. I'm thinking about ways to remove fishing from perfection, and replace it with something equally challenging, but vegan. I haven't decided on anything yet, and I'm unsure if I have the skills to make it a reality.
  • Edit the Special Orders and events requiring animal products. Right now the quests and events work, they'll just be inconsistent. Like Gus requiring eggs, you giving him mashed bananas and him still making an omelet and talking about eggs in the event.
