About this mod

Replaces the Lockpicking and Hacking mingames of New Vegas with those found in The Outer Worlds. Gamepad/Controller compatible. More abstract, but simpler minigames that use time as an added element of unlocking a Door/Terminal/Container.

Overview

It's not the best choice, it's.... wait, what game is this again?

Have you always hated these stupid Lockpicking and Hacking minigames? Have you ever thought to yourself "golly gee, I'd sure take a punch to the face rather than incorrectly guess word-salad nonsense for the billionth time", then give this mod a try! Still waiting on someone to port over Oblivion's absolutely GOAT-ed Lockpicking mingame.

Inspired by Better Hacking, and Bypass Minigames, the difference is I've never wanted to wholesale skip these minigames, per se, but just to take away the friction that only adds to my frustration when I play this game, and The Outer Worlds did a great job of that in my opinion with its minigames.

Yes, it's less realistic. If a more abstract implementation bothers you, then don't download this mod.

Alas, you still need the needed Lockpick/Science skills to pass the checks as normal, and yes you still need enough resources in order to bypass them, but all you have to do now is hold down a button/key (and don't get caught!) and wait for the Container/Door/Terminal to unlock.

Included is an INI file and an MCM to do all configuration of Time/Resource costs, inputs, etc.

Disables the assigned button/key whilst the Minigame overlay is on-screen, and are re-enabled once either the Overlay closes or the Unlock is complete.

Features

  • Gives more granular scaling to the Lockpick and Science Skills.
    • The more skilled you are relative to the Terminal/Door difficulty, the less time and resources it takes to unlock.
  • Resource/Time Cost functions can be adjusted in the MCM or the INI.
  • Controller Compatible.
  • Disables the assigned Key or Button so as to not trigger those functions whilst the Minigame overlay is on-screen.
  • A separate resource for Hacking, Bypass Shunts, have been added to most of the same Leveled Items as Bobby Pins.
    • This is now an opt-in feature, and by default Terminals will also require Bobby Pins to unlock.
    • --> This obviously is not realistic, but populating the game world with enough Bypass Shunts without a crazy amount of Worldspace Edits has proven too challenging.
  • Choose whether a Container/Door/Terminal will open immediately after a successful lockpick/hack.
  • If the Door/Container/Terminal has an owner, they will be notified if they detect you whilst completing the unlock.
  • Will increment the "Locks Picked" or "Computers Hacked" Misc Stats upon successful unlock, depending on if the lock is a Door/Container vs Terminal.

Compatibility

I have not thoroughly tested a bunch of mods, but here's a shortlist of what I have tested:

  • Just Loot Menu - Compatible Whilst playing with a controller, once a container unlocks, input is blocked temporarily to not interfere with JLM's menu.
  • JIP CCC - Compatible - Like above with JLM, with a controller, input is blocked whilst the Minigame overlay is on-screen to not interfere with CCC's controller commands

I wouldn't expect compatibility with mods that try to do the same thing; they would essentially be substitutes for this mod, so compatibility is not expected. Such as Bypass Minigames or Better Hacking.

Keyboard users should generally have an easier time, as you have more options than controller users to remap the key in the MCM/INI.

Load order doesn't matter; everything in the mod is scripts.
