I have uploaded a 2024 revision of my original guide with new information and cleaned up instructions. This should hopefully make the process less painful for new Steam Deck owners modding Fallout 4 for the first time.

THIS IS AND WILL NOT BE A MOD SUPPORT PAGE.

I simply do not have the time in my day to spare for any and all requests for me to help you figure out what's wrong with your own load order. The guide in and of itself is sound, having worked for me as well as others for Fallout 4 and Skyrim. It also coincides with other guides that can be found on YouTube and Reddit. If you decide to make some crazy 1000 mod load order and not test it before bringing it all over to Steam Deck, that isn't my issue.

Remember that Fallout 4 is going through a Proton Layer on Steam Deck, it's very possible that some things may simply just not work if you have some weird setup. If that's the case, you can always dual boot Windows on your Deck.

hi friend, thanks for the guide. while I don't use 100% of your guide, you have helped me considerably. a quick question though, in general my game is already running great with mods on the deck just a slight problem. it seems i can't assign any button on any mods that need button assignment for example esp explorer, cant say if it steam deck exclusive problem since have never had this problem when im using my pc. any idea for a fixaround?

Author, what's the point of this mod? Even without the mod I have a stable 60 fps in the game on steam deck. And if you turn off frame limitations, then about 85 fps.
Автор, смысл в этом моде? У меня и без мода стабильные 60 фпс в игре на steam deck. А если выключить ограничения кадров, то около 85 фпс.

It's not a mod. It's a guide on manually modding Fallout 4 on Steam Deck.

Under the Articles section you offer a really good Load Order suggestion.  Is this Load Order also good for us PC gamers, or is there anything special about it for Steam Deck?

I use it myself on my PC and Deck. Nothing really special about it, though depending on the mods you use, you may have to tweak it a bit.

Firstly thank you for the guide it was very detail.  However I am running into a issue with F4SE not being detected after renaming it.  I have gone over the guide several  time. Some of the mods work but not all, like backs, merc pack,. I wanted to know if all of your mods are working and if you have test with mod organizer. As I am out of ideas as to why it is not being detected by some mods.

I install all my mods and edit manually; I don't use any mod loaders. Double check your main folder and make sure you don't have any old files in there (e.g. if you renamed f4se but still have the old launcher in there, it can cause issues similar to what you're describing.)

So my Steam Deck game runs and loads most mods except he "jiggly fun" ones! Also female body mods are invisible. Game runs perfectly fine and loads all mods correctly on my PC.

Could this be the issue? I get the following terminal message on start:
    F4SE runtime: initialize (version = 0.6.23 010A0A30 01D8CAA0A2A34046, os = 6.2

    INSANE.
    Worked almost flawlessly.
I tried on my own and failed.
Pain points. All figured out in this lovely guide.
ModLoad order inside /appdata needs to be copied to deck. (I was missing mods.....where is load order stored...oh...appdata)
    Renaming f4se_loader.exe to Fallout4Laucher.exe
Other pemutations (adding f4se to steam and renaming it to Fallout4.exe) all didn't work.
    Thanks so much.

    Its amazing....it's flawless.

Check out my article here: Simple Load Order Guide at Fallout 4 Nexus - Mods and community (nexusmods.com)

As far as mods that never leave my load order, too many to list. But mods I simply cannot live without?

      Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch
      Leveled Item Framework
      Previsbines Repair Pack
      Everything by CodeBlackCrash
Nvidia Reflex Support (I've yet to experiment with it on Steam Deck, but I suspect it's a no-go. I use it on my PC)
ShadowBoost (I believe you should notice a trend at this point)
Charger Pistol and Zap Gun as they go well with CodeBlackCrash stuff for a lore friendly playthrough
Select Shotgun, Revolver, Pickaxe and SE-01 Power Armor by Neeher, continuing with the lore friendly trend
4estGimp's Feral Ghoul Expansion is just too good. Makes Bethesda's shitty Ghouls way more interesting

Not sure why, but I simply don't have a plugins.txt file anywhere. In the location you pointed to is a file called DLCList.txt. Is that the same thing? Probably not. The game runs fine and mods work as intended on the desktop.

You have to take your "plugins.txt" from your windows desktop and transfer it over to your steam deck.

      It's located in: "C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Fallout4"

Rename it from "plugins.txt" to "Plugins.txt" and then drag and drop it into the following location:

      “Steam > steamapps > compatdata > 377160 > pfx > drive_c > users > steamuser > AppData > Fallout 4”

Make sure that it's read only.  Failure to do so can cause mods to be moved around and screw up your load order.  It's not an issue if the mods you use are load order independent - e.g. none of them conflict in any way, shape or form - but if you've got a load order dependent mod list, it'll screw your game up if you don't take that precaution.

I got the game up and running fine with the mods I added. The only thing I can't do now is change the graphics settings like before. When I launch the game, via Game Mode, all I see is the F4SE's command line briefly and no longer see the Bethesda Launcher graphics settings. Is this supposed to happen like this and if so how would I change the graphics settings in the future?

    Thanks

Just rename the files back to their original names temporarily, adjust your settings and then rename them to how my guide asks you to. Or you can just manually edit the ini files with the Steam Deck's text editor. Just need a dock with a keyboard and mouse (doing it with the pads and touch screen is a pita). The first thing you should do is adjust your graphics and make any necessary ini changes, then start modding.

    Hey,
I've been running into a stumbling block. I followed your guide installed Fallout on the deck, copied my Data folder, F4SE, and Plugins.txt zu a micro SD card and pasted them in the corresponding decks Fallout folders.
The problem I am now facing is with the script extender not been detected by mods relying on it.
I have checked that F4SE is running, it shows the loading screen before the game and if I check it with getf4seversion I get the installed version.
However, for example the Immersive Animation Framework does not recognise it and does not function. I checked that all mods are enabled in the Mod category.
I am at my wits end. If you have any tips or can point me in any direction I would be grateful.

Did you rename f4se_loader.exe to Fallout4Launcher.exe?

      yes, I did.
I am suspecting that the problem might be connected to the loading time. That the game starts before F4SE is fully loaded and that the mods therefore do not register that it is running. Even though the game itself notices that it is.
If I run the same mod setup on my windows pc it works flawless, which leads me to the conclusion that it has to be related to the deck.

      Press X to Doubt.

I'm running a 400-mod load order chock full of F4SE mods.

There is no solution. You botched something during the process.
