It's the road that matters, not the destination. - V

If you're like me, you've played this game a few times and somehow fall into the same routine of doing the same things in the same order. Well, now there's a fix for that.

With this mod, every time you open the map, a random map pin will be set as your destination. Now you can randomize the order you do things in and enjoy your map wanderings!

How to use:

This mod requires redscript. In addition, unless you want to run with the default settings, then you also need Mod Settings. Mod Settings itself requires ArchiveXL and RED4ext.

Once all that's installed, go into Mod Settings and adjust your settings.

Every pin type can be enabled or disabled as eligible for being randomly selected. You can also set the maximum distance (in meters) that a pin will be considered eligible to be selected.

By default, the mod will run automatically every time you open the map. To open the map without running the mod, press and hold the map button. When you let go, the map will open, but not change what is currently being tracked.

To reverse this behavior, turn on the Never unless held setting (it defaults to off, which means always unless held). When this setting is on, the rules are reversed: The mod will never run when you open the map, unless you open the map by pressing and holding the map button.

To review, if the setting is OFF (the default):
  • Always Unless Held
  • Mod runs by default no matter how you get to the map
  • Only way to not run the mod is to hold the button before opening the map.
And if the setting is ON:
  • Never Unless Held
  • Mod won't run when you open the map normally
  • Only way to get the mod to run is to hold the button before opening the map.
Your choice.

The next setting is the "Track Two Things" setting. If you want to track both a primary and secondary type of pin each time you open the map, enable this setting. Otherwise only one pin will be tracked each time you open the map.

Whatever you are currently tracking when you open the map is ineligible to be randomly selected. The mod will always select something else (assuming something qualifies). If you want what you're currently tracking to have a chance to be selected, untrack it before opening the map.

The final setting to mention is the Force Vehicle Contract setting. Since vehicle contracts only appear on the map when you're nearby, and only one appears at a time, this means the chance of the mod ever picking a vehicle contract is very low. So, if you want, this setting will ignore randomization in favor of picking the Vehicle Contract instead. (This only applies before starting the contract, while the pin is still the steering wheel type.)

Suggested mods to also get:

The mod Track What You Want (not my mod) will make it so that only one thing is tracked at a time. Combined with this mod, this means opening the map will untrack whatever you were tracking (whether that was one or two things) and then track a single random something.

If you do install that other mod, then make sure to leave the "Track Two Things" setting in this mod turned off.

I would have included this functionality but I would have been basically copying that mod to do so, so you can just install it separately if you want it.

The other mod I suggest if you're trying to randomize your playthrough is Butt Dial. Since some quests in the game require you to make a holocall to progress, the Butt Dial mod will help randomize when (and who) you make outgoing calls to, and help with your randomized playthrough. By using both of these mods together, you will randomize the order that you play through the game.

Speaking about other mods, this mod will work with other mods that put additional pins on the map. I have tested it with Missing Persons for instance and it is capable of randomly selecting and tracking the pin that mod puts on the map.

Important Note about a slight delay:

By the time you get to the end of the game, there are over 600 pins on the map. Unfortunately the map does not instantly load all the pins the second you open the map. There can be a slight delay before all the pins are loaded. The mod will wait for all the pins to finish loading before randomly selecting something. This can be ~2 seconds if there's a lot of pins.

If you close the map before the mod activates, then the mod won't be able to do anything.

If you manually right click to track something before the delay is over, the mod will still activate, meaning what you just tracked may get overwritten. Wait until the mod activates (or open the map without the mod) before manually tracking something.

A couple pin types missing:

I have not yet added the 'apartment for rent' pins or the DLC's 'criminal activity' pins. I'm pretty sure I have every other pin type included though. My last playthrough had already completed them all so I couldn't test. When my current playthrough gets far enough for those pins to appear and I can confirm they work, I'll update this mod to add them and remove this note.

Every other pin type should be supported, though, and even these pins have a chance to be randomly selected (you just can't filter them out in the settings).

Important Note about the first time you open the map:

There appears to be a bug in the game that the first time you track something doesn't seem to want to display correctly. I'm pretty sure it's a vanilla bug (or a bug caused by another mod) and not anything to do with my mod.

If you're using the Track Two Things setting, this means that only the secondary type works the first time you open the map. Close the map and reopen it to try again.

If you're not using the Track Two Things setting, then the mod does work on the first time, and randomly tracks something, but the line will not appear until you close the map and start to move.

In Conclusion:

Hope you enjoy it. Yet again this is a mod I made mostly for myself but am sharing in case any others want/like it, too.

The idea is to add a little randomization to your playthrough, especially for those of us who have done so many playthroughs already.

Let me know any issues you come across and I'll see what I can do. This mod is very simple however and I'd be surprised if there's any issues.
