  • Outfit Management

    v0.12.0 introduces Outfits for Bowen.
Please note this is the 'first pass' and while pretty solid it does have one or two odd quirks, such as he's not putting his boots back on until he goes outside when he sleeps in a safe place.  He also doesn't remove his backpack when he's relaxing.

Right now there are no filters for the items you can give him so be mindful not to overlap certain items.  ie Don't put boots in "Cold Weather Gear" or he'll take them off when it stops snowing etc.

You will find these dialogue options under "About what you wear"

Accessories - Items such as jewelry which Bowen will wear at all times.

Armor - Bowen's every day outfit.  He will wear this when traveling or in place of other outfits if he doesn't ...

  • Assign Bowen a Home 0.10.0

How to assign a home for Bowen to live in
    ==================================

You need your relationship with Bowen to be 80+.  Would you move in with someone you didn't like or use their home?  Bowen has a reason for his lifestyle and isn't going to change it for anyone he doesn't consider a good friend.
You need to be inside the player home.

The "I want to talk about home" dialogue option will appear leading to "You can live here"

At this point Bowen will now consider the location home.  You can live here will be replaced with About this area..

    About this area...
    =============
This dialogue option will allow you to place markers about the home that Bowen will use to follow his daily home schedule.   Placing t...

  • Technical: Bowen's Opinion of Dovakiin SPOILERS (The plan as of 0.9.7)

Note: This article is filled with spoilers.

Bowen's opinion of the player character is measured with a simple score of 0-100 and has essentially 3 phases.  0-40, 41-70 and 71+.  It begins at 50 as the beginning of the game.

The original plan was for this score to be raised (or lowered) by quest outcomes.  However, since the vast majority of quests have only a positive outcome the mechanics have been simplified somewhat.  Certain quest outcomes will lower Bowen's opinion but raising it won't be tied to quests.  There are simply too many quests to deal with every possible outcome, especially with modded quests it would be never ending.   With that in mind, the first two phases will consider 'time spent' to increase Bowen's opinion.  That means Bowen's ...

  • Technical: Weapon Management

How Bowen manages his weapons. (As of 0.9.6)

Bowen prefers dual wielding bladed weapons for melee.  So he will always try to keep two such weapons in his inventory while selling the rest.

When a sword or dagger is added to his inventory they are placed on a "no sell" list, preventing Bowen from selling them to the first merchant he sees.  This remains until he equips any such weapon, then this list is cleared allowing Bowen to sell less effective weapons.

When a weapon is equipped, it is added to another list to track which weapons in his inventory he has equipped which also serves as a 'no sell' list.  If this list exceeds 2 items, the first item on the list is removed.  This is how Bowen keeps track of which weapons are his best.  The logic bein...

  • Bowen 0.9.5 Post Mortem

This is the first post mortem for Bowen.  I consider him my flagship mod in what I plan to be a long list of mods.  Since I expect to work on him over a very long period, it is likely I write several post mortems when it feels appropriate.

The 0.9.5 release comes nearly 5 months after I first started working on Bowen.  I have never modded for an Elder Scrolls before and I have only released a handful of mods for Rimworld which is completely different process.
In many ways Bowen is still very much a "first mod ever".  Rimworld does very little to prepare you for modding Skyrim.  I went from working exclusively with XML and 2D images to the Creation Kit.  I had never used Papyrus before.  Almost zero experience with the Creation Kit, nevermind creating a follower....

  • Vision Doc: Bowen - Follower

The following is a sort of post-vision document for Bowen.  There were several key points that are very important to me when I started working on the mod.

1: Bowen is NOT a cheat.

If the player can't do it.  Bowen shouldn't be able to either.  Within reason.

    2: Bowen should feel intelligent.

He should feel aware and respond accordingly.  For example: When in combat, rather than throwing out random taunts, he should respond to being taunted with specific replies.

3: Bowen has a life.  Most followers just sit around in one spot 24/7.  Bowen should travel and follow a schedule like regular NPCs.

4: Bowen is his own person.  He has opinions and convictions he lives by.  Most followers are designed to allow ...

  • Understanding Bowen's Support Behavior: Merchant and Quartermaster

    Bowen's Role
The first thing to come to grips with is that Bowen will manage his own inventory with the goal in mind of fulfilling certain roles.

    Bowen is..

    An alchemist
    A healer
    A quartermaster
    A cook

Unlike other followers, Bowen actually starts with a good stock of items that he will try to maintain with those roles in mind.

    Inventory management
To manage his inventory Bowen will

Loot:  He will actively search for items he thinks he needs and pick things up when he can.  He will pick up, harvest and otherwise loot corpses and chests.
Trade: When following the player will look for merchant chests with a merchant nearby.  When he finds one, he will buy and sell from that merchant.  This ...
