All is handled by a script so no more quests edit. In addition, a new NPC (fully voiced!) has been added to deactivate or reactivate the mod as please, he's located in the Imperial Trading Company Office on the Imperial City Waterfront, don't hesitate to greet him!
If you still notice dead NPC, let me know and I will see if I can included them in the mod :) For low responsibility NPC that tend to stole and got killed, you can try this mod that resolve the issue in a very logical way: https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/15406
Hi, thanks for the suggestion! Since there's already a player-friendly way to disable/enable the mod directly ingame I'm not sure it's necessary at this point, but I'll keep that in mind if I decide to add new stuff in it :)
Excellent idea for a mod! It bugs me how fast Oblivion can mow down all the friends you make in the game, especially if you're running overhaul mods. Looking forward to seeing this updated and expanded whenever you get around to it. For now, thanks for sharing it with all of us!
Thanks! I think the mod is pretty much final at the moment, except if someone report a bug or if I find more characters who need a protection, so give it a try
Works pretty well so far for all the vanilla NPCs I've run into! Thanks. I wonder if anyone will make a version that covers Better Cities or Unique Landscapes NPCs at some point.
Can you make City-Swimmer essential please? She doesn't travel but the guards kill her for stealing food... Ongar the World-Weary too steals food and loses his protected status upon completing the Ultimate Heist.
MOD Oblivion Uncut restores Varnardo's monthly Chorrol visit, can you place protection on him too?
So, if I prefer not to use the UOP (my own reasons), will this mod alter things for me in ways that might be detrimental to my game? It is a valuable mod, and I would like very much to use it, but if it is designed for maximum compatibility with the UOP, then perhaps it isn't the best idea to use it in a game to which the UOP has not been applied. Is that right?
I have always hated watching an NPC being attacked, and not being able to get to them before they are killed. Especially the Black Horse Courier rider out of Chorrol; she always gets attacked by three bad guys just past the mine, and I can't get there in time. So yes, I would love to use this. I am just concerned about how much it might be tied to the UOP.
Thank you, either way, for making this mod. Nicely done. :)
It *should* be good, but you'll have some fixes added by the UOP (I've tried to re-add the UOP modifications when a quest was modified by the mod). Maybe a conflict with the Sanguine quest, I should check that.
A very minor thing, but this mod undoes the fix for Umbacano ending up with twin copies of the Staff of Nenalata that the UOP fixes, almost certainly because this fix was only added within the past month. Again, very minor and not really an issue, just a heads of something that might be addressed if there are any further updates to this mod.
Edit: And perhaps Jayred Ice-Veins from Shivering Isles might be changed so that he keeps his essential status, since the UOP seems to correct the situation that allows him to keep that status, and taking the bone arrows from him removes the status even without the UOP.
Edit Roderic Pierrane seems to be a traveling NPC with UOP as well, likely to travel with Irene Metrick to Bruma, and isn't covered under this mod either.
Edit: For me, both Hlidara Mothril and Tooth-in-the-Sea lose their Essential status after the quests to do with them. There doesn't seem to be any reason for this to be happening though; this mod is the last one effecting those quests, it seems that they don't have the Essential 0 setting to make those characters un-essential, and nothing else is effecting those characters either.
One question. Why make them Essential, rather than Protected? If you make them Protected, then only the player can kill them. It's a great idea, but having the option to choose would be nice.
I have a WIP for Oblivion that makes NPCs Protected. It's all done in the CS, in the Actor sections. I've got all but 2-3 characters working so far with just the "Protected" tag. Neither of which are traveling NPCs, so I'm pretty sure it would work just fine with your mod.

a heavy modified game can chew these npcs up in no time
This comment was a relief! I only have about 50 .esps anyway!

Thank you for this essential (yeeeaaaahhhh) mod
I've installed it but not tested yet but it seems to handle this issue very well :)
I'll see for Varnardo, I'm still working on it
