About this mod

This mod adds a completely new skill to the game called "Deception". It is used instead of speech when your char is lying/deceiving people, as well as a requirement for disguises. To achieve this, the mod changes roughly 33 speech checks and adds 4 completely new checks.

Deception - secondary speech skill and disguise overhaul

This mod aims to fix two gripes I always had with New Vegas: The overpowered speech skill and the overly-simplistic disguise mechanic. It does this by adding a completely new skill to the game called "Deception". This skill does two things:

1. "secondary" speech skill:

In vanilla, Speech is arguably the most powerful skill. It allows you to bypass many fights and almost always get the "optimal" ending for a quest. On top of that, being able to bullshit your way out of fights like that doesn't even require a huge skill investment. Pumping speech should come at the cost of being weaker in combat - but it does not. I aim to fix that by separating speech-checks into two categories. Now, when your character is lying or in other ways deceiving people in dialogue, you need to pass a Deception-check, not a Speech-check.

I changed roughly 33 speech checks to use deception instead. This includes bullshitting your way into operating on Caesar without proper medical knowledge and getting away with it afterwards, keeping omerta hitmen from attacking you and Carlitos,... I even restructured the final showdown with Lanius. I also added four completely new dialogue options using recycled voice lines and the amazing xVASynth 2, including a way to save Cass from the Van-Graffs by lying to them. Exact details can be found in the Articles Section. Any ideas for new checks are welcome.

Admittedly, Speech is still much more powerful and provides more (and more important) dialogue options. Dialogues were not written with a Deception-skill in mind. Still, I think its a good change.

2. RPG-ified Disguises:

Using disguises now requires the deception skill. Think of it as a representation of how well your character can imitate faction members behaviors and ways of speaking. You can still put on disguises without the required skill, but faction members will see right through you while enemies of the faction will be hostile anyways. On top of that, if you have 20 more deception than required for the disguise, enemies of the faction will no longer attack you. This means that your Legion double-agent character may now walk around Legion camps in a NCR disguise without any trouble. Note that female characters will need more deception to use certain disguises (configurable in INI). I also added a new powerful Perk related to Disguises, more may be added later. If you don't like this idea you may turn off the disguise part of this mod in the INI.

As an added bonus, I implemented a feature similar to "Faction Armor Redone" - Putting on the disguise of a faction that you have good relations with will no longer reset your rep with them. This way, you may better become part of a faction and no longer get disrespected despite being a factions hero.

In a perfect world, this mod would add a hitman-like system but with skill-checks. After hours of trying I gave up on scripting that. Way to many workarounds, way to many things that can go wrong.

Installation and Compatability

Install xNVSE. Then install JIP LN and this mod using your preferred mod manager. Next, open up your New Vegas directory. Navigate to Data -> NVSE -> plugins and open "jip_nvse.ini" with a texteditor. Change bEnableBigGunsSkill from 0 to 1. Save the file. If you don't do this, the deception skill will not show up when leveling. You may configure this mod using the "sm Overhaul.ini" located in Data/config.

And yes, I did not actually add a new new skill to the game, I simply made use of JIPs re-enable Big Guns feature and renamed Big Guns to Deception. Because of this, other mods that reintroduce Big Guns or make use of the skill will be incompatible. It won't break your game or cause errors, but being able to shoot a minigun better because you are good at lying doesn't really make much sense :). When using this mod with other mods that alter disguise scripts (such as YUP), make sure to load this one last and overwrite their changes. The whiteglove disguise fix from YUP is included in this mod.

Possible Future plans:
- add/change more skill-checks
- make the amount of Deception required to use disguises configurable through the INI
