This mod is tested and working on game version 1.03.2.
A fresh new save file is recommended.
This mod will work, with possible kinks, with an existing game as long as you have the crimson amulet starting gift. There may be unintended side-effects still.
New feature: Mage Mode - Swap between mage and melee playstyles on the fly using a special item. Read more in its own section found further below.
Aspects Gameplay Overhaul puts emphasis on melee combat, freedom of build, and experimentation. This mod makes item usage strategical, reworks enemy AI, archery, FP system, smithing and weapon progression, spells and equipment, allows you to 'choose your own difficulty', makes respeccing free, and puts an emphasis on horizontal power progression instead of vertical.
This mod has 100+ hours work put in to it, much of which is balancing.
And much more. Read below to see all major changes...
Requirements/Things to Know:
At game start:
***Choose crimson amulet as your starting gift***- and never take it off. This amulet affects many of the workings behind the scenes such as FP regen. If you accidentally unequip it, you can just put it back on.
At the start of a new game you will be very weak.
The following checkpoints will dramatically change the gameplay and your power level. They are all achievable early game within limgrave. In order of importance:
-Upgrade a weapon to +24 - See 'Weapon & Smithing' section.
-Level up mind to 25.
-Obtain Godskin talisman from the twin maiden husks.
*You will be doing little damage until you upgrade your weapons.* - See 'Weapon & Smithing' section.
Most item usage is locked until you reach 25 mind stat (150 FP). - To use items: Level up and keep exactly 25 mind - you can go higher, but it messes with the formulas. See “FP system and items” section.
FP System and Items -
FP now slowly regens. It takes 40 seconds to regen 150 FP.
At 25 mind you will have 150FP. Keep it here as the system is based around having exactly 150 FP.
Most items are now infinite use and cost 150 FP to use. The FP bar acts as a visual cooldown timer.
Item, sorcery, and incantation damage has been balanced to make all of them a viable usage of FP. Spell and weapon art costs have also been massively highered.
Most damaging items now scale heavily with one or two stats. Take note when building your character.
Spell requirements have been reduced to 0. Use any spell you find. (caution – some spells may be OP, not fully tested. Keep this in mind and play how you want to.)
Together, these changes mean your FP bar is a secondary, slowly recovering stamina bar which is used for sorcery, incantations, items, and arts.
Item and spell spam is no longer possible unless sacrificing health flask charges for FP flask charges.
These changes make combat more melee focussed, while items and spells are a useful support on a cooldown.
New:- Reworked FP regen equipment:
All the equipment that regens FP has been modified to fit this system. Equipping these will open up different playstyles, each greatly increasing your ability to use spells and items in their own way, making for some faster and furious gameplay.
Of most note: The godskin talisman now restores a chunk of HP and 200 FP after multiple successive melee attacks on your foes. Be rewarded for pushing the attack on your foes! Its cost? It weighs a lot. (also, its description does not match its effect.)
This talisman is available from the twin maiden husks.
Archery -
Bows deal much more damage.
You can only carry 5 arrows, 10 shattershard arrows, and 2 great arrows.
All arrows are purchased for free from Kale. Buy the max amount from him and they will auto refill in to your ammo whenever you rest at a site of grace or die.
Arrows deal much more damage than shattershard arrows.
All other arrows cannot be equipped, however each bow specialises in an element.
Shortbows: deal more damage, reduced range, limited weapon arts, higher mobility.
Longbows: deal less damage, but more with the exclusive mighty shot art. Huge range with standard arrows for sniping, access to more weapon arts.
Greatbows: big bow, big damage, 1 shot. Use the through and through art for max damage.
You cannot use crossbows.
Arrows can grant you burst ranged damage at minimal or no FP cost, however your ammo is limited per rest, so spend them wisely.
Weapons & Smithing -
Try out any weapon you want, then dedicate some runes to upgrade your favourites and unlock their potential for your arsenal.
All equipment requirements have been reduced to 0. Use any equipment you find.
Un-upgraded equipment isn't very good, but still usable.
Level +24 weapons are now standard damage.
You need 12 smithing stones [1],or 1 somber smithing stone [1] to fully upgrade a weapon (plus using
the free ones explained below).
The stones to upgrade from level +3 to +24 are FREE. Thus, it is worth investing 12 stones[1] in to a single weapon to attain +3 and then jump to +24.
Level +25 still requires a rare ancient dragon stone. It is rumoured some traders have acquired some for themselves.
Smithing stones (and somber)[1] no longer drop from enemies.
Smithing stones (and somber)[1] can be found around the world and purchased from limgrave merchants infinitely for a reasonable fee. You can kill these merchants to obtain their bells and centralise them at the twin maiden husks for easier access near the smithy.
It takes around 40,000-100,000 runes to fully upgrade a weapon if buying all the stones.
Some mashing required at the forge to fully upgrade. Imagine you are bashing the weapon on the anvil with your hammer; with each blow, it gets stronger.
Using any weapon with any build is great, however I wanted progression to still be a part of finding and using new weapons. The changes made mean that finding a new weapon is exciting, while the decision of which ones to level up with your stones and hard earned runes is still there.
New Feature added: Mage Mode!
Want to swap to a mage anytime? No problem. Then back to your rogue/warrior? You got it.
Mage mode is activated by using the now re-usable starlight shard item.
Behold the power of the stars, channelling your inner magic at the cost of physical strength.
Mage mode lasts 5 minutes and requires a full FP bar of 150 to enter.
While under the effects of starlight shard:
+Massive FP regen.
+Slightly increased max FP
-Reduced physical damage.
-Take much more damage.
-The most expensive spells are uncastable. (unless using FP cost reducing equipment.)
-Items that cost FP are disabled.
-Weapons arts that cost FP are disabled.
These changes flip the roles of physical and magic this mod aims for. In mage mode: you become a magical glass cannon. Spellcasting will be your main way to deal damage, while you can weave physical attacks when your FP briefly recharges.
Enemy Changes:
Higher health.
Multiplied resistances -exploiting their weaknesses matters more.
Reduced damage.
Improved AI - they will see and hear you from further away and hunt you down. Stealth and distraction is now an ideal route for some situations.
Other Player Changes:
Damage values changed –everything is viable.
+2 Accessory slots and +1 Spell slot.
Start game with +12 flask. All flask upgrade items have been replaced with other items.
Choose your own difficulty:
There are 140 golden seeds next to the first site of grace. These are "cheats" which can be used to select your own difficulty. They can be sold for 100k each, or used to increase flask usage. Note that all normal golden seeds found in the world have been removed from the game. The choice on how to use these is yours, shove what you don't use in storage and save for later if needed. I recommend increasing your flask charges periodically throughout your playthrough. There's no shame in using more seeds later if needed.
Other things of note/tips:
You can only teleport to churches and cathedrals.
Respeccing is free! Twinmaiden husks sell larval tears for 0 runes.
On new game, I recommend aiming to fully upgrade a melee weapon, a bow, and spell-based weapon asap (see 'Weapons & Smithing' section).
Seek out the merchants of Limgrave. They have what you need to get started.
Smithing stones [1] are found in many places and are sold cheaply in limited quantity by many merchants. Exploration is a great alternative to grinding for the runes.
A level cap of 80-140 is suitable using this mod depending on your skill level.
Combat now revolves around using primarily melee weapons. Archery(dex), sorcery(int), incantations(faith) and items(mixed) are support. Mix and match works very well too, any build will work. As respeccing is free and equipment/spell requirements are 0, experiment!
When using mimics veil and standing still enemies cannot detect you (not new). Use other tricks such as shooting arrows to distract enemies and sneak by. Ruin fragments are infinite throwing stones at very low FP cost, and shattershard arrows make a loud noise.
Player sources for healing, poison and scarlet rot, such as poison pot, healing incantations, weapons and spells, items have been reworked, removed or heavily nerfed. This is to encourage a more active and risky playstyle. No passively hiding behind a regenning healthbar, or slowly ticking poison damage.
A few other select items have been removed from the game, have been made unusable info items, or you are unable to otherwise use or even pick them up. This is for balance reasons. Nothing serious or game-changing is impacted. If you see this, it's not a bug.
Runes gained have been increased by a third to compensate for the new smithing system.
This mod scales fully in to all NG+. - If you make it to NG+7, a special twists awaits you.
...and tons of other changes for balance and to compliment these features. Many surprises await you in the lands between.
