The goal of this project is to recreate the experience of the classic Dragon Warrior entries in DQXI: namely, a collection of various modifications by several authors of the Dragon Quest XI Modding Discord.
The first endeavor in this project is a retranslation of monster and spell names to more closely reflect their original (literal) meaning. Also included is a Retro UI and Sound Effects pack.
See the "Articles" tab for details Monster/Spell/Location name changes (including retranslations / censorship during localization)
First, a shoutout to the Dragon Warrior Nostalgia Mod by AMetalSlimeDrawsNear -- A faithful recreation of classic Dragon Warrior (monster/spell) names, item names, as well as other dialogue and UI changes. This mod draws specific inspiration from Dragon Warrior 1-4 as well as Dungeons and Dragons (which many classic names were originally based on).
Next, the Throwback Mod Pack Retranslation (located in the 'Files' tab) -- A retranslation of DQXI spell names with a close eye for the original (Japanese) puns, onomatopoeia, wordplay, etc. This mod draws inspiration from Dragon Warrior 1-7, early translation romhacks, and the limitations of 8/16-bit consoles: shortened character length, condensed names, etc.
-Spell Names: 100% complete
-Location Names: 100% complete (Zoom/Retn/UI Changes)
-Main Character Names: 100% complete (Field/Battle/UI Changes)
-Monster Names: 45-50% complete
This mod requires DQXIHook (standalone link below)
Included is a zipped "DataTables" folder which contains a small set of unpacked Unreal Engine 4 (UE4) asset files ("DT_Action_ArticleInfo.uexp" and "DT_Monster_ArticleInfo.uexp"). The only way to load these loose files is to have DQXIHook installed.
Download links and installation instructions for DQXIHook is provided directly by Infogram here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/742120/discussions/0/1732087825006394099/
This mod is 100% compatible with other mods. Download the standalone file for DQXIHook from the link above and extract it to your installation directory: <steamapps>\common\DRAGON QUEST XI\Game\Binaries\Win64\
(where <steamapps> is typically C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\ )
----------------------------------------------------
Note: SpecialK users will want to check the instructions in the link above, where it is suggested to rename the new "dxgi.dll" to "dinput8.dll" instead. Then, add this section to the end of "dxgi.ini" in the same directory:
[Import.DQXIHook]
Architecture=x64
Filename=dinput8.dll
Role=ThirdParty
When=Early
You can check to see that DQXIHook is working by pressing the Tilde (~) key in-game: a console should pop up at the bottom of the screen.
----------------------------------------------------
Once you have DQXIHook squared away, unpack the "DataTables" folder included with this mod to: <steamapps>\common\DRAGON QUEST XI\Game\Content\
If everything is done correctly, you should have:
<steamapps>\common\DRAGON QUEST XI\Game\Binaries\Win64\dxgi.dll
<steamapps>\common\DRAGON QUEST XI\Game\Content\DataTables\Localization\("DT_Action_ArticleInfo.uexp" and "DT_Monster_ArticleInfo.uexp")
<steamapps>\common\DRAGON QUEST XI\Game\Content\DataTables\Text\("DT_TextPackCommon.uexp' and 'DT_TextDataGame.uexp")
(Retro UI Pack)
<steamapps>\common\DRAGON QUEST XI\Game\Content\UIs_common\...
<steamapps>\common\DRAGON QUEST XI\Game\Content\UIs_modern\...
(Retro SFX Pack:)
<steamapps>\common\DRAGON QUEST XI\Game\Content\Sounds\ME\(a bunch of .uasset and .uexp files)
