Great mod. I hope you continue working on it and port it to the definitive edition. There are some better tools, I think, over at the Dragon Quest modding discord, for properly editing text. So you can make it "Martina" instead of just Tina, I think.
The way this was done is kind of confusing to me. Why in the world is Veronica "Beronika"? "Beronika" is literally just Veronica with Japanese phonetics. It's like keeping Sylvia as "Shirubia" or something. Same with Camus as "Kamyu," but "Beronika" is particularly baffling to me.
Is there some sort of source saying this was intended? Because I'd normally assume that "Beronika" is literally just "Veronica" in Japanese phonetics.
Yep. Just Veronica in Japanese phonetics. I made this over 4 years ago during the summer of 2020 and was really just looking to make something a little different during the downtime between the death of the OG community and the DE release, so there's not a great deal of rhyme or reason with every single thing.
Hence, "Veronica" was changed to "Beronika" to try to match the Japanese phonetics when reading along with the Japanese voiceovers. Otherwise, not a lot of thought was put into it.
Camus vs Kamyu is a similar deal. I get that "Camus" is a common French name and may very well have inspired Kamyu's name, but anyone who's not French will read it as "Cam Uhs". So "Kamyu" was chosen for the same reason- it lines up better phonetically when reading along with the Japanese voiceovers.
Is there a way to do only the more accurate Japanese translations of dialog/ description text, rather than everything? Characters and location names are what might confuse me with the original voice overs still in place.
Not on this (OG) version. The tools were eventually improved on Definitive Edition (DE) to allow much more robust editing, the newer version of the mod (which does this) is linked in the sticky above.
This, alongside the JP voiceovers in the DE version, makes it my preferred version (and the preferred version for most modders, which is why much of the community's efforts shifted over to it last year)
I plan to -- hopefully soon (maybe a port in time for the 1 year anniversary of the original release? lol)
Currently working my way through updating some of my existing DE mods. I think my goal for the initial release of the DE port would be to just get the existing translations ported and improved using the new tools we have.
A full dialogue retranslation is probably still aways off, unfortunately (although that is my eventual goal), but we can at least get the monster/spell/character/location names adjusted.
