What does this mod do?

TavernBrawlerRebalanced:
  • Changes the feat "Tavern Brawler" to utilize both Strength and Dexterity. Your Strength Modifier is applied to the damage bonus, and your Dexterity Modifier is applied to the attack roll (accuracy) bonus normally provided by the feat. Now to get the most out of Tavern Brawler, you will need to spread your points as you see fit into both Strength and Dexterity. Negative modifiers will also apply, so if either stat is neglected completely, then you will suffer a small penalty to either damage or accuracy.
  • Adds Dexterity to the list of possible ability score improvements when selecting this feat.
  • Removes separate instance of damage when using a thrown weapon; damage bonus now applied directly in thrown weapon damage calculation. This should prevent duplicate instances of bonus thrown damage from items, and also allows this damage to be reduced by damage reduction effects.

TavernBrawlerFinesse:
  • Changes the feat "Tavern Brawler" to work like the "Finesse" weapon property, meaning it will now utilize Dexterity or Strength depending on which modifier is higher at the time an unarmed attack is performed. This includes both melee and ranged unarmed attacks (ex: thrown weapon).

TavernBrawlerFinesse_NoAccuracy:
  • Same behavior as "TavernBrawlerFinesse" except your Dexterity or Strength will only apply a bonus to the damage roll.
  • Attack roll bonus is removed completely.

TavernBrawlerFinesse_AllStats:
  • Same behavior as "TavernBrawlerFinesse" except Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma are also considered in the formula when choosing to apply the highest modifier. Go punch some fools, you crazy mages!
  • Adds all abilities to the list of possible ability score improvements when selecting this feat.
  • Removes separate instance of damage when using a thrown weapon; damage bonus now applied directly in thrown weapon damage calculation. This should prevent duplicate instances of bonus thrown damage from items, and also allows this damage to be reduced by damage reduction effects.

Note for all versions:  Your default unarmed bonus will still be applied to unarmed attacks! That means Strength for most classes and Dexterity for Monks if greater than their Strength. This specifically ONLY changes the bonuses applied by the Tavern Brawler feat.

What is the purpose of this mod? Why make it?

I created this mod in order to balance "Tavern Brawler" and allow it to be used more flexibly on otherwise niche builds. Having it only scale with Strength by default allowed for certain builds to completely overshadow and outperform their Dexterity focused counterparts with little-to-no tradeoffs.

For example, Strength-Monk with "Tavern Brawler" did everything that a traditional Dexterity-Wisdom Monk could do but better. They hit harder, had higher accuracy, better AC, and better movement (due to Jump distance), while allowing the player to streamline their stats even further. This change will help to level that playing field and allow players to not feel like they are nerfing themselves for playing Dexterity-focused unarmed builds.

My hope is that whichever version of this mod you choose, it will provide a more balanced and overall more fun experience.

Give me the flavor. What are the lore implications?

A true "Tavern Brawler" has been in their fair share of rough fights at the local bars. With this pattern of drunken violence comes not only the experience of throwing hard-hitting haymakers, but also making every hit count. Afterall, when the whole room is spinning, the one with quick feet and steady hands is often the victor. Skál!

Are there any visual changes? How do I know it's working?

  • Updated in-game tooltips for the "Tavern Brawler" feat to reflect the new behavior. Text will be updated in both level-up screens and character sheet feat icon upon hover.
  • Combat log will reflect the new behavior when dealing damage with an unarmed attack. Hovering the damage dealt (grey text) in the combat log will show that both the Attack Roll (accuracy) and Damage Roll (damage) utilize the proper stat modifier.
  • After doing damage with a thrown weapon, you should no longer see a separate line with "(Tavern Brawler)" in the combat log.
  • When selecting this feat, you should also see additional choices for your +1 ability score improvement depending on which version of the mod you chose to install.

How do I install it?

I recommend using an automated method to install all mods unless specified otherwise, preferably using the Baldur's Gate 3 Mod Manager, but Nexus' own Vortex Mod Manager should also work.

Install one of the four versions available. Do not install multiple versions and expect them to work.

This mod was tested on an in-progress playthrough, so it should be fine to apply to existing saves.

Is this mod compatible with <mod name>?

This mod should be compatible with any mod so long as that mod is not editing the "Tavern Brawler" feat. Mods that change the UI or change damage calculations, especially for unarmed attacks, may affect the behavioral and textual changes included in this mod. If incompatibilities are reported, I will try to provide updates to fix it, but no promises.

If you're looking for alternatives, check out drkekyll's mod Tavern Brawler RAW! This one changes "Tavern Brawler" to work more like how it does in good ol' pen-and-paper DnD. A fantastic alternative for those wanting to stay true to the source material or just shake up their gameplay.
