📦 Smart Inventory

Smart Inventory is a lightweight and immersive inventory management system that eliminates tedious micromanagement.

The mod is accessed and configured via a small container that you can build inside your ship (costs 1 credit)

You can set carry limits for any Ammo, Aid, Chem, and Throwable items you want to manage. It can track the weapons you’re carrying and fetch/store the required ammo from your ship’s cargo hold in real time. It can sync your inventory automatically, or be triggered manually. And it can be configured so that every time you board your ship, all resources and contraband go straight to the cargo hold.

It’s super useful, and once set up, it simply does its job without getting in the way.

You can tune it to make the game slightly harder or easier, depending on your personal taste.

Every feature is entirely optional - in its initial state, Smart Inventory does nothing.

🎯 Carry Limits

When a carry limit is set for an item, the mod will prevent you from picking up any more than that amount. You’ll never be allowed to carry more than, say, 200 x 7.77mm rounds (if that’s how you configured it). If you try to pick up any excess rounds, they will be put back in the container they came from, or simply dropped on the floor.

Carry limits apply unless:
You're near your ship (per your Cargo Access Distance setting): excess items are moved to the cargo hold.
You crafted or purchased the item: limits are ignored.

⚙️ Setting Up Carry Limits

Open the transfer window on the container and place the number of items you want inside. Your carry limit is now set. Adjust it anytime by adding/removing the quantity desired.

All items are refunded — if you want to limit yourself to 10 Med Packs but only have 5, just deposit them twice. If an item isn't present in the container, it's ignored, so your effective carry limit is “unlimited.”

🔁 Sync
A Sync can be triggered in three ways:
  • By pressing the Sync button on the buildable container.
  • Using the remote Sync Device (can be hotkeyed).
  • Enabling Auto Sync to trigger it every time you board your Home Ship.

What sync does:
  • Tops up your inventory with limited items from the ship’s cargo hold.
  • Stores any excess items from your inventory into the ship’s cargo.

Notes:
  • Items without a carry limit are ignored, except for Throwables - these are stored by default to prevent carrying of junk like Toxic Gas Mines. You can still pick them up; they’re just stored during the next Sync.
  • Sync won’t run if you’re in combat or if your ship is out of range.

🔫 Weapon Tracker
  • Makes Smart Inventory track the weapons you are carrying.
  • Picking up or dropping weapons will move ammo to/from the ship as needed, provided you’re within Cargo Access Distance.
  • This means you can grab a weapon off the shelf in your armory and the required ammo just “shows up.” No need to micromanage!
  • This works great with the “Weighted Ammo” setting and makes switching loadouts seamless and fun.

💡 Optional Settings
Auto Sync
Triggers a Sync every time you board your Home Ship.

Item Overflow
Allows an overflow buffer of 25% more than the set carry limit. Overflow is rounded up, so you'll always get at least 1 extra item. This means you always have some room for a small number of items post-sync.

Additional Items (Resources & Misc)

With this setting ON, all resources and selected miscellaneous items (like Ship Parts and contraband) will be transferred to the ship during Sync. This adds a couple of extra seconds to Sync time, but in my opinion it’s super convenient and totally worth it.

🎮 How Does It Play?
Smart Inventory has dramatically increased my enjoyment of the game. I can dial in just the right amount of “scarcity” without relying on mods that reduce ammo/med pack spawns.

I now play with Weighted Ammo ON and Carry Capacity reduced, which feels really nice. Picking up an extra suit of armor really weighs you down (as it should). Hauling every weapon “just in case” becomes impractical - and meaningful. That’s my taste, but the flexibility is the point. It’s also made my ship’s armory feel genuinely useful and fun to interact with.

Most importantly, it’s cut down massively on tedious inventory micromanagement. I spend less time in menus and more time playing. Always a win.

📘 Good to Know
  • Does not touch any vanilla records — fully load order neutral.
  • Every feature is opt-in.
  • Mod-added items do not work by default — see Patches section.

🛠 Mod Support
Smart Inventory supports tracking of modded weapons natively, with a few small caveats:
- The weapon uses a recognised ammo type (either vanilla or patched)
- The weapon has the WeaponTypeRanged keyword

⚠️ The first time you activate Weapon Tracking, Smart Inventory might not recognize a modded weapon. Just drop and then pick it back up once. That’s it - ammo handling will now work seamlessly. You can patch weapons into Smart Inventory’s item lists to avoid this, but for individual weapons, it really isn’t necessary.

🧩Patches for modded items
You can add Aid, Ammo, Chems, Throwables, Weapons, and Misc items from other mods to Smart Inventory’s lists via patch.

I have already created patches for the following (available on the download page):

📄 See the Articles section for a simple guide to making your own patch (it's very simple)
