Changelogs

Chocobo Valley adds the titular feathery beasts into Stardew as custom livestock! Currently it features the following:

  • Seven breeds of chocobos, based on their different iterations throughout the Final Fantasy series.
  • Tons of color variations to collect, with a rarity system tied with animal friendship. The variants also reference the actual colors found within each respective FF title (plus some extras)
  • Your birds produce different items depending on breed and rarity, many of which include...
  •  ...Custom items that Final Fantasy fans may recognize! Gysahl green crops, orichalcum ore, tomestones, and more!
  • And last but not least, an adorable moogle shopkeep that you can invite to set up shop on your farm!

First, here are some instructions on how to install:

(To uninstall, simply delete the Chocobo Valley from your mods folder. Any existing chocobos, CV items, or CV buildings on your farm should be replaced with placeholders that you can then sell or demolish safely.)

NOTE: Most custom items in this mod can only be obtained through raising chocobos, you won't find the new seeds, ores, or other items without them! And, very importantly, Marnie doesn't sell chocobos in her shop! In order to obtain your chocobos, you'll need help from Buckwheat the moogle. He sends you a letter very early in the game letting you know what to do, but in case something glitches or you miss it, here's some backup instructions:
  • In Robin's construction menu/shop, you can have her build a spot for Buckwheat to set up shop on your farm. This will require some gold and hay.
  • After his space is built, talk to Buckwheat and he'll sell you chocobo eggs! You'll need an upgraded coop with an incubator next to start raising your flock.
NOTE: Only the two small breeds (Ferngill and Jylland) can be incubated in the coop. I recommend starting with the Ferngill breed (tiny eggs) so you can work toward earning an ostrich incubator, which is what you'll need for the other (large) chocobo breeds.
  • Buckwheat only sells common chocobo eggs. However, if you raise the friendship of your common colored chocobo, it'll begin to lay uncommon eggs! Incubate and raise the friendship of the chocobos that hatch from those, and you'll eventually get rare chocobo eggs!
  • Buckwheat will exchange 5 rare tiny chocobo eggs of any quality for an ostrich incubator! From there, you'll gain access to the remaining (large) chocobo breeds!

This lists everything in the mod outright in case you want to check something, or to just see what the mod has to offer. Anything hidden by spoilers contains... mod spoilers! So don't click those if you want to discover everything yourself!

Some general (non-spoilery) notes:

  • Each breed comes in three rarities: common, uncommon, and rare. Each rarity tier also has multiple colors.
  • They will have different item producing behaviors depending on breed. Ones that drop their items overnight (like a chicken) are: Ferngill, Jylland, and Eorzean. Ones that need to be sheared (like a sheep) are: Lucian. Ones that need to be let outside to dig up their items (like a pig) are: Ivalician, Vana'delian, and Puslian. I know it may seem odd at first for you to get eggs from shearing or after digging... think of it this way, Lucian chocobos need to feel comfortable and pampered in order to lay, and the breeds who dig simply prefer to nest in dirt.
  • Chocobos come in two size categories: small and large. Small chocobos are incubated in coops, while large ones must be incubated in barns. A baby chocobo will look different depending on its size category (e.g. all large chocobos share the same baby sprite, which is different from the one the small breeds have)
  • The tips of a baby chocobos head feathers show the color they will grow into
  • Any chocobo egg can be turned into chocobo mayo by placing it in a mayonnaise machine, the type of mayo you get is determined by the rarity of egg you put in (rare egg = top-tier mayonnaise) The eggs can also be used in recipes that call for 'any egg'. All custom crops can be processed in preserve jars and kegs as well, and all custom ores can be smelted into bars.
  • Aside from the processing functionality mentioned above, custom items don't otherwise have any use beyond selling them. Some feathers can be traded to Buckwheat. I DO plan to make optional add-on mods that add further functionality to the custom items, such as new recipes. Tomestones in particular are planned to act as a type of currency for another shopkeeper.
  • Buckwheat has a TON of different dialogue whenever you enter his shop! He'll tell you about himself and the chocobos, giving info and tips for what each breed does (if you don't want to be spoiled by the spoiler sections below, he is a great alternate source of information!) NOTE: If Buckwheat's dialogue and/or portrait doesn't show up in his shop page for you, try reducing your UI scaling or increasing your game window size.

Speaking of Buckwheat, this is what he currently sells in his shop:

This mod should be compatible with anything that plays nice with Content Patcher and Mail Framework mod.

Alternative Textures works to change a chocobo's color to a different one within the same breed/rarity!
(note, I did find a minor visual bug. After placing custom items within an alternately textured machine, it will display grass when it's done processing instead of the proper item art. Machines that aren't alternatively textured display the image correctly)

Compatible with Better Ranching. There is a minor visual bug, Lucian chocobos will display grass above their head when ready to shear. If it bothers you, it can be hidden by disabling "DisplayProduce" in the BR config.

NEW! Is now compatible with Machine Progression System as of MPS 1.4.0!

I've created an optional compatibility add-on for Animal Husbandry Mod that allows chocobos to be fed with the custom crops in this mod (gysahl, krakka, curiel, tantel, mimett, and sylkis greens) and allows chocobos to be exchanged for chicken meat. HOWEVER it has not been thoroughly tested and does have the following known issues:
- custom items will display as grass when fed using the basket
- chocobos are invisible during the contest

  • Legendary colored variants for each breed, with special methods for obtaining them. They will reference special chocobos from the series, like Trickster from FF11 (Buckwheat's chocobo Daisy is actually this color), rambunctious chocobos from FF13-2, and more.
  • New goodies to trade from Buckwheat, like the ability to build a fat chocobo who acts as a storage container (possibly).
  • Optional new color expansions (naturalistic color pack, etc.)
  • Maybe new breeds. I'm tempted to make ones for the chocobos in FF7 (remake) and FF16.
  • Optional expansions that introduce new moogle shopkeepers, and provide new functionality/uses for items in the base mod. One in particular I'm planning is a cooking themed expansion that provides recipes for all the chocobo greens/forage, along with some new crops/fruit.
  • Carbuncle pets. I already had the sprites for replacing cats in a private mod I made last year. Ideally, they would either function as a fully new pet species, or a summon-able companion via trinkets if possible.

Chocobo Valley - Mounts
Want to ride chocobos too? This mod provides my Eorzean chocobos as replacements for the horse through content patcher and/or alternative textures!

If you enjoy my mods and would like to leave a tip, that would mean a lot to me (please don't feel obligated, though!)
You can tip me through ko-fi here!
