COMPATIBLE WITH 1.6 UPDATE
It always bugged me that you can pickle vegetables in this game, but you can't pickle pickles! So I decided to change that.
Now you can purchase a cucumber starter, grow it on your farm, then harvest, eat, cook, juice, and yes, even PICKLE your cucumbers!

I have figured out how to change the pickled cucumbers to say "Pickles." To do this, I used producer framework mod (PFM) to edit the preserves jar to turn cucumbers into the base "Pickles" from the vanilla game. These are the same pickles that can be bought from the Traveling Cart.
Since the vanilla pickles are the lowest priced pickled vegetable in the game, I am also including a file that changes the price of "Pickles" to reflect the value of the cucumber in my mod. (The value of a single jar of pickles is equal to [2 * Base Crop Value + 50], therefore the new value of pickles are [2 * 60 + 50 = 180). However, that does mean that the vanilla "Pickles" will have a higher value than some other pickled vegetables.
The pickles WILL benefit from the artisan profession, as they are coded to do so in the base game, so you will not lose any profit by using the new files.
1.6 Update:
The newest version no longer requires JSON Assets.
Edit: Forgot to update the PFM file. Putting cucumbers in a keg will yield pickles properly now.
Edit 2: Re-added NPC gift tastes.
Install
I have included one main file that has all features for the mod, and another that has just the base crop, vegetable, and recipe. The pickle name change, mailed recipe, and pickle price change are all now included as optional files, so you can mix and match as you see fit. You MUST download the main JA file if you use any of the optional files.
How to use
The cucumber starter will grow on a trellis, which will be available to purchase from Pierre during the summer, available year 1.It will show up on the very bottom of the shop menu (unless you have other mods that add items to his inventory loaded after this one) instead of with all of the seeds, so if you don't see them, make sure you've scrolled all the way down. Cucumber Starter will now be shown with the rest of the summer crops in Pierre's shop, just above the grass starter.
Once you purchase and plant your starter, it will grow fully after 11 days and then you can harvest it again every 3 days after. It is exclusively a summer crop, so it will die in the fall unless you grow it in the greenhouse or farmhouse. It is possible to get more than one cucumber per harvest, similar to eggplant.
I have also added a recipe, Cucumber Salad, that you can buy from the Saloon for 300 g, or if you install the Mail Framework (MFM) file, Pierre will send you the recipe in the mail once you reach 2 hearts with him. (See the Spoiler below for Villager Tastes and the recipe)
If Pierre sends you the letter and you read it, the recipe will disappear from Gus' inventory, preventing you from wasting your money on it. You also should not receive the letter if you buy it from Gus first.
A few scarecrows from the mod I use called MsCrowley’s Seasonal Scarecrows by MsCrowley is visible next to the cucumber plant. It is an adorable mod, please check it out if you want your scarecrows to wear sunglasses in the summer.
I also HIGHLY recommend the Walk Through Trellis by TheOfficialTab, it has improved my farming life immensely. Use the version labeled Old Method to make it work with mods.
TheOfficialTab has retired Walk Through Trellis. Passable Crops by ncarigon offers the same features and is also compatible with modded crops (like this one.)

- Install the latest version of SMAPI.
- Install the latest version of Content Patcher.
- Install the latest version of JSON Assets. (optional for older versions of mod).
- Install the latest version of Mail Framework Mod (optional).
- Install the latest version of Producer Framework Mod (optional).
- Download ONE of the main files of this mod and unzip it into Stardew Valley/Mods.
- Run the game using SMAPI.
