DREUGHS

Overview & Lore

Dreughs are a race that has long been established in The Elder Scrolls lore, an aquatic race of octopus or crustacean-like beastfolk that according to legend may once have even ruled the world as tyrant overlords with a version of Molag Bal serving as their chieftain.  Regardless of the truth or lackthereof in these myths, Dreughs today have been reduced to lower-intelligence beings with little to no civilization of their own, surviving as dangerous scavengers known to attack and kill the other races of Tamriel for food, territory, or to defend their clutches of eggs, which can often be found within watery caves or secluded ponds and lakes.  They are known to domesticate crabs as cattle or defenders of their nests, and to steal the fish from the nets of fisherman.

They come in many variations that can change throughout their life cycle, ranging from underwater Dreugh more akin to squids or octopi to land Dreugh with hardened Chitin carapaces that, along with their wax and eggs, have been harvested by civilized races for use in crafting.  The most terrifying variant of these creatures you'll find in Skyrim is the Brood Queen, a gigantic Dreugh flanked by oversized mudcrabs known to call smaller Dreughs to serve her and defend her nest.  They dislike the cold, and thus are mainly found in the southern, more temperate areas of Skyrim, or deep within the depths of sunken caves and ruins, though there have been sightings of Dreughs on Solstheim that, following the Red Year and the ashfall that followed, have adapted to their surroundings and perhaps have even been altered over time by the mysterious heartstones that have scattered across the island...Dreugh are known to be able to produce massive amounts of electricity from their bodies, which scholars believe to be natural as opposed to magical.  The Ash Dreughs of Solstheim, however, seem to have adapted to be able to produce flames and heat to ward off their foes.

Creature Types Added

*note: Dreughs will use whatever mudcrab textures you currently have installed; in the screenshots I am using RESOLUTIONED - MUDCRAB & CHITIN & LEG 8K by wammy*

  • RIVER DREUGHS - The smallest and by far most numerous variant of Dreughs in Skyrim, you will find River Dreughs most often along the banks and shores of rivers, ponds, and lakes.  Although the weaker of the commonly encountered Dreugh variants, River Dreughs can still be formidable opponents, especially if found in numbers, and can use their unique biology to attack at range with shock spells, heal themselves slowly in battle, turn nearly invisible by blending into their environment, and hardening their chitin carapaces to provide themselves additional protection.  They can also summon a Mudcrab Minion to their side in battle.  They may be found holding fish they've caught or stolen from fisherman, along with an occasional trinket they may have found while scavenging.
  • CAVE DREUGHS - Cave Dreughs are larger and more formidable than their River Dreugh counterparts, and are most often found deep within watery caves, sunken ruins, and flooded passageways, though they can occasionally be found above the surface, lurking behind a waterfall or temporarily emerging from their underground lairs to search for food.  Cave Dreughs can use stronger versions of the shock, healing, and defensive abilities seen in River Dreughs, though instead of the ability to camoflage themselves, they rely on intimidation and brute strength, often sending opponents fleeing in terror at the sight of them.  Cave Dreughs may be holding meat from slain creatures found in or near their watery lairs, and like their River counterparts can also summon Mudcrab Minions to their side in battle.
  • BROOD QUEENS - The largest and by far most dangerous Dreugh variant, Brood Queens are a RARE and terrifying sight, found lording over clutches of eggs in bodies of water large and secluded enough to act as their nests.  Their natural ability to use shock, healing, and defensive abilities are unmatched, and they have the unique ability to summon a Dreugh Clutchtender to their side to tend to their nests and defend them if necessary.  They are always flanked by gigantic mudcrabs known as Mudcrab Clutchguards, who will fight to the death to protect the queen and defend the piles of mud and slime that house the Dreugh egg clusters.
  • DREUGH CLUTCHTENDERS - These Dreugh serve as drones to the Brood Queens, and are by far the weakest of their kind, though they have the ability to use their natural healing abilities on others, which they use to help incubate the nests and to support their Queens and the Clutchguard in battle, along with being able to produce the standard shock abilities of a River Dreugh.  You will ONLY see Clutchtenders when they are summoned by a Brood Queen, and may be able to summon them yourself if you are able to defeat one.
  • ASH DREUGHS - The Ash Dreughs of Solstheim vary greatly from those found on the mainland of Skyrim, having adapted to the harsh and alien conditions of their environment in multiple ways, having a distinct appearance, a larger size, and the complete loss of their ability to produce electricity from their bodies, though this has been more than compensated for with the unique ability among their kind to produce intense heat and flames.  It is also possible that the Ash Dreughs have been altered by the mysterious power of the heartstones found dotted across the ashlands of Solstheim, and are always found holding one, though whether this is out of necessity or simple instinct is up for debate.  They have also formed a kinship with the native Ash Hoppers, and can call large Ash Hopper Minions to their side in lieu of the mudcrabs their mainland counterparts favor.
  • MUDCRAB CLUTCHGUARD - These gigantic mudcrabs are only found in Brood Queen nests, and are loyal defenders of the clutch.  Powerful, durable, and fast, these immense crustaceans can be called to your side in battle if you manage to defeat a Brood Queen.
  • MUDCRAB MINIONS - These are the mudcrab servants summoned by River and Cave Dreughs, and although much smaller and weaker than Clutchguard, they are still larger, faster, and more dangerous than an average mudcrab.  Occasionally you may find a spell tome (or Dreugh Staff if you use the optional Creation Club - Staves patch) to summon a Mudcrab Minion of your own.
  • ASH HOPPER MINIONS - These large ash hoppers serve the Ash Dreugh as faithfully as mudcrabs serve the Dreughs on the mainland, and are larger and more powerful than a regular ash hopper.  You may find a spell tome (or Dreugh Staff if you use the optional Creation Club - Staves patch) on the bodies of Ash Dreugh slain in battle to summon an Ash Hopper Minion of your own.

NEW ITEMS & SPELLS

  • NEW ALCHEMY INGREDIENTS - DREUGH EGGS (occasionally found on every Dreugh variant, or in large egg clusters in areas where Dreughs live) & DREUGH CHITIN (found on all Dreugh variants, can be used for potions or to craft Dreugh Chitin Armor)

  • NEW FOOD ITEM - DREUGH LEGS (always found on all Dreugh variants)
  • NEW STAVES (OPTIONAL CREATION CLUB/AE STAVES PATCH) - New Dreugh Staves that are staff versions of the summon spells listed above

COMPATIBILITY & REQUIREMENTS

  • The main mod has NO REQUIREMENTS and is .esl flagged (meaning it won't take up a slot in your load order)
  • I recommend RESOLUTIONED - MUDCRAB & CHITIN & LEG 8K so that your Dreughs will look like the ones in my screenshots, and KANJ'S CHAURUS EGG TEXTURES so that the Dreugh Egg mounds will look as I intended them to
  • There are Optional Files for Creation Club - Rare Curios (which adds Dreugh Wax as loot to all Dreugh variants) & Creation Club - Staves (which allows all Dreugh Variants to occasionally wield various Dreugh staves themselves which you can also get from them as loot, AND adds new Dreugh Staff variants for all of the custom summon spells from my mod)
***IF YOU HAVE ANNIVERSARY EDITION OR BOTH THE RARE CURIOS & STAVES CREATIONS, DOWNLOAD BOTH OPTIONAL FILES (RARE CURIOS AND STAVES) AND THEN ALSO DOWNLOAD THE COMPATIBILITY PATCH, OTHERWISE WHICHEVER IS LOADED LAST WILL WIN OUT OVER THE OTHER AND YOU WILL MISS OUT ON ONE OF THEM***
  • This mod adds Dreughs to MANY areas in Skyrim, and if another mod adds something in the exact same spot, there could be compatibility issues like clipping or Dreughs being covered up by things added by other mods.  I have gone to great pains to ensure that Dreughs are placed only in areas that will not be problematic with cities, towns, settlements etc. in the base game, and even avoided certain areas commonly used by mods for new structures like the bulk of Lake Illinalta.  I cannot and will not make patches for every random mod that may add things where Dreughs are placed.
  • This mod can be used on existing saves
