About this mod

A carefully curated version of the original mod with well-balanced settings that do not deviate from vanilla as much as the original mod.

This is the modified version of the original mod where I have rebalanced the damage output by doing careful calculation as well made some sensible tweaks to the gravity effect on the projectiles. For example, in the original mod the formula used for re-calculating damage on arrows and bolts was simply 2x the damage output of vanilla values. This made archery a bit too OP. This broke the balance of combat especially in the early game as it turned Skyrim into Counter Strike like experience. While on original mod, I could basically KO any iron clad bandit with 2 iron arrows using a hunting bow on 0 archery skill (archery skill being 0 is related to another mod I am using to recreate YASH-like start, nothing to do with this mod). This mod fixes that.

Rationale:

The goal of this mod is to give a immersive experience at early as well as late game. While the original mod makes damage more realistic, in my honest opinion, this does not blend well with traditional RPG philosophy and Skyrim's progression system. Although I reduced the overall damage output, the damage scale is still better than vanilla and designed to make proper sense with the existing weapon progression system. The low tier weapons and ammo will be weak but slightly better than vanilla. As you progress in the game, the damage on the weapons of higher tiers will deviate from vanilla. This will be enough to make you the difference at high tiers of archery gear without making your player character overpowered. The total damage output won't be as extreme as the original mod.

So, to rebalance the damage on the ammo, I used the below formula:

where x is the vanilla value

The resulting values look like this when compared against vanilla and CAO:

These are just few examples to show how damage scales for the ammo. With regards to bows and crossbows I hand-tweaked the damage values for each weapon to find the right balance according to the weapon tier. I also brought the projectiles speed closer to vanilla values. They will be still slightly faster than vanilla. This was done keeping in mind the projectile parry feature in mods such as Strike Obstruction System and Deflection.

Overall changes as copied from original mod page, edited to indicate my changes where they are applicable:
  • Disabled aim auto assist. No change
  • Dead Arm at zero stamina (Camera and controller shakes if a drawn bow is held when Stamina is zero). No change
  • Arrows/Bolts cause bleeding damage to NPCs. Bleeding damage reduced, timespan slightly increased.
  • Drawn Bows now drain stamina. No change
  • Bows/Crossbows now require a Bow String. They can be crafted, bought or found throughout Skyrim. No change
  • Arrows/Bolts now require x6/x3 Bundle of Fletchings. They can be bought or found throughout Skyrim. No change
  • A bundle of Arrows/Bolts is now 24/12. No change
  • Arrows/Bolts do 100% more damage. Damage changed, no more 100% damage but still higher than vanilla.
  • Added Steel/Dwarven Arrows of Fire/Frost/Shock to the Forge since their Bolts counterparts are in the game. No change
  • Chance to pin limbs on critical hit. No change
  • Bows/Crossbows do 50% more damage but draw 15% slower. Damage changed.
  • Up to 15 Arrow/Bolts can be seen on a body. Up to 6 Arrow/Bolts can be seen on a body.
  • Increased the number of stray Projectiles allowed in a Cell to 50. No change
  • Craftable Longbow added to Wood Section of Forge. No change
  • Craftable Hunting Bow added to Iron section of Forge. No change
  • Craftable Imperial Bow added to Imperial section of Forge. No change
  • Crossbows/Bolts can now be crafted at any Forge, provided you have the pre-requisite DG requirements. No change
  • Arrows/Bolts fly flatter. Not as flat, but slightly flatter than vanilla.
  • NPCs use ammo. No change
  • Bound Bow Spell Tome appears in Leveled Lists. Bound Bow damage changed
  • Added Apprentice level Spell 'Ethereal Bow'. It is a lower level Bound Bow (vanilla BB stats). Added to Leveled Lists so it can be bought from merchants who sell Apprentice level Spells. Ethereal Bow damage changed.
  • Removed the Skyrim Sidestep. No change
  • Fixed the bug with the follower Hunting Bow. By default, all followers used their Hunting Bow rather than the Bow you give them, even if you removed the bow from their inventory. Followers will also no longer pull a Hunting Bow out of thin air if they have no Bow in their inventory. No change
