Introduction

I've been a fan of Kalilies hair mods for a while but limited my usage to shorter hair because I didn't like clipping or that hair would float above the body.  I was excited when ousnius ported the physics mod to Special Edition.  Not only is the clipping gone but the hair looks really nice when the PC or an NPC is moving.

While it was easy to choose a hairstyle for the PC, I also wanted pretty hair on many of the female NPC's.  Note: I found it doesn't work well to assign physics hair directly to an NPC via the CK.  But wigs work pretty well.

Initially, I was crafting wigs at the Skyforge and then using an NPC outfitter mod to give them to NPC's.  Later I would use AddItemMenu to obtain the wigs.  But it seemed tedious and I was limiting myself to a small subset (about 10) of the 100 wigs that I could remember what they looked like.  I also noticed posts by some users who also wanted an easier way to assign wigs.  So I wrote this mod.  Because I want to contribute to the community, I'm sharing it.

Installation

This mod requires KS Hairdos - HDT SMP (Physics) >= 1.4.3 and all of it's dependencies and requirements.  So, install that mod first and then make sure the hair physics are working correctly for a female player character.  Once all is good, then I suggest using a mod manager to install this mod.

Uninstallation

While you can uninstall using your mod manager, please be aware that this mod uses scripts.  My understanding is that scripts remain in the save files even after the mod is removed.

Better Dialogue Controls
So you can see which wig you are actually selecting

Usage

Start a dialog with a female NPC.  Select "Let me style your hair" (which will hopefully be near the bottom).

The wigs are divided into Short, Medium, Long, Extra Long and Fancy.  There's also a Utility menu.  Navigate through the menu to find a wig you want to see on the NPC and select it.  Select the menu choice ^^^ (when offered) to go up one level in the menu.  If you don't like the selected wig, repeat the process and select a different wig.  If there are problems, see the FAQ (below).

Newbie Alert

This is my first published mod.  Let's assume I made some mistakes.  If you aren't OK with newbie mistakes, I suggest you don't download.  If, however, you are the sort of person willing to provide constructive criticism, I'll listen and try to learn.

FAQ

Q. How do I report a bug?
First, read the entire FAQ.  (I won't fix what is impossible to fix.)  To report a bug, use the Bugs tab for this mod.  Please be specific about what you did before the bug and what happened.  A complaint of "it didn't work" isn't going to lead to anything productive.

Q. I changed wigs but instead I got "vanilla" hair.
A. I'm not sure what causes that but I'm pretty sure it is a timing issue internal to the game engine.  The mod usually removes the old wig from the NPC's inventory.  Sometimes that doesn't work and she ends up with more than one wig in her inventory.  Why that causes a problem, I don't know.

To address the problem -- Go to the mod's utility menu and select Cleanup -- Remove KSSMP wigs from NPC's inventory.  Then go back and select the wig you want her to wear.

Q. I asked for wig A and got wig B
A. While I tested all the wigs, mistakes happen especially since I don't know what all the wigs are supposed to look like.  Please submit a bug report.

Q. What happened to my frame rate?
A. Processing physics is demanding on your computer's processors.  There isn't anything I can do to make your computer run faster.  However I have suggestions.
  • When my game gets very slow when entering Riften or Whiterun (right after the auto save), I simply quit to main menu and then choose Continue.  It works for me.
  • Don't put wigs on so many NPC's.  (However, on my computer, I have wigs on just about all women NPC's including guards in Whiterun and the above trick works for me.)

Q. Why can't I choose the wig's color?

A. Because I can't either.  Color is determined by RaceMenu.

Q. Why did the Reguard or Dunmer NPC get a blond wig? (Are you nuts?)
A. I don't control the wig's color.  Color is determined by RaceMenu.  Having said that, if you look at the NPC's Actor Data (Creation Kit), you'll likely find that her hair color is "default."  If you are that concerned, you can create a little patch mod to assign a hair color to the NPC's.
Note: I am planning some ESL mods that fix the hair color for some NPC's.

Q. Does this work on beast races?

A. I don't know.  I think they'd look silly so I haven't tried.

Q. Does this work with child mods?
A. Maybe.  Depends on the child mod.  Since I don't know which mods you may have installed, the dialog will work for female children but the wigs might or might not work.

Q. One of the wigs, um, wigged out!  (Got stretchy.)
A. Talk to the NPC and select "Let me style your hair."  Then go into the Utility menu and fix the wig.  This should unequip and reequip the wig which should solve the stretched out problem.

Q. What's with Harvest Hair with Feathers?  Why can't I cleanly remove it?
A. KS Hairdos - HDT SMP (Physics) configured the feathers as a circlet.  If the NPC is wearing the feathers circlet, you can use the utility menu to remove it.

Q. Why does Arivanya (Windhelm) keep removing her wig?
A. I don't know.  My guess is something in her script.  (She's the victim in a possible murder that can be interrupted by the player.)

Q. Can you add "such and so" wig?
A. I can only add wigs that are already in KS Hairdos - HDT SMP (Physics).  If wigs are added to that mod, my hope is to add them to this mod.  (But it's a lot of tedious work so it won't be quick.)

Q. I already have a lot of mods. Why didn't you release this mod as an ESL?
A. Because it contains scripts (mini programs).  AFAIK, ESL mods cannot contain scripts.

Q. Can you port this to Virtual Reality, Limited Edition, Xbox, etc?

A. No.  I don't have a way to test the port.

Q. Can I port this to Virtual Reality, Limited Edition, Xbox, etc?
A. Probably.  Send me a message asking for permission; which I'll almost certainly grant unless someone else has started the port.
