About this mod

This mod tries to expand the barefoot footstep sounds experience in Skyrim by adding sounds to surfaces like carpet, sand and metal, as well as creating barefoot sneaking sounds to all of these. It's a similar mod to what I did for Fallout 4 and uses the same sound resources. Works for both Player and NPC characters.

Update 07/05/2023: small update to the ESP and some new sounds for dirt, gravel and snow surfaces. Further volume tweaks for footsteps. Dirt sound update isn't needed with version 1.2.

Description:

This mod tries to expand the barefoot footstep sounds experience in Skyrim by adding sounds to surfaces like carpet, sand and metal, as well as creating barefoot sneaking sounds to all of these and vanilla surfaces ( new sounds for dirt, gravel and snow). It's a similar mod to what I did for Fallout 4 and uses the same sound resources. Works for both Player and NPC characters.

The footstep sets include:
- stone / rock (walking, sneaking, running, sprinting and jumping down) - replaced vanilla barefoot sounds with new ones.
- wood (walking, sneaking, running, sprinting and jumping down) - just vanilla barefoot sounds; added sneaking sounds and jump down.
- metal (walking, sneaking, running, sprinting and jumping down) - a barefoot sound set for all metal surfaces.
- carpet (walking, sneaking, running, sprinting and jumping down) - a barefoot sound set for carpets and rugs.
- sand / mud (walking, sneaking, running, sprinting and jumping down) - a barefoot sound set for sand and mud surfaces.
- dirt (walking, sneaking, running, sprinting and jumping down) - a barefoot sound set for dirt surfaces.
- gravel (walking, sneaking, running, sprinting and jumping down) - a barefoot sound set for gravel surfaces.
- snow (walking, sneaking, running, sprinting and jumping down) - a barefoot sound set for snow surfaces.
- grass, ice, water puddle (walking, sneaking, running, sprinting and jumping down) - just vanilla footsteps (only slightly modified in some cases), but defined here as barefoot for consistency.

No videos for the mod, sorry. If you would like to check how some of these footsteps sound, please visit my mod for Fallout 4:  https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/45101  There are a few showcases of the new sounds there in the videos tab (sounds from version 1.2 not included).

Requirements:
None.

Installation:
- Manual:
Just download the package and extract the contents to your Skyrim SE main folder (where the .exe is) and activate the .esp in your mod manager.
- Nexus Mod Manager:
Install the package just like any other mod. Recommended method.
- Other mod managers:
I'm sorry, I never used Vortex or Mod Organizer, so I can't provide any instructions for these programs.

Uninstallation:
- Manual:
Just deactivate the .esp file in your mod manager or delete it in your Data folder + remove a folder called "BarefootFST" from this location: Data/Sound/FX/fst/
- Mod Organizer 2 / Nexus Mod Manager:
Recommended method, if you installed the files with this program. Just deinstall the mod how you do with other mods, program should do everything for you automatically.
- Other mod managers:
If you use them, then you probably know much better than me what to do.

Bugs / Issues:
Sometimes surfaces sound different than they should from the look of them - this might be a problem of wrong material distribution in the game here and there (dirt surface texture triggering stone footsteps etc.) There's a mod called Unofficial Material Fix which tries to fix that to some extent, so you might want to give it a go:  https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/21027

Compatibility:
Unless another mod deals with barefoot footstep records, should be compatible with everything. There are some small exceptions though, please read the Patches section below.

Patches for armor / clothing mods:
In some armor or clothing mods the main part covering the body slot triggers booted footsteps, probably to enhance the effect of wearing a certain type of armor (heavy or light). This however will eliminate the barefoot sounds from my mod (Immersive Armors mod is a good example). If you don't care much for some subtle rustling or clanging that can be heard in heavy armor booted footsteps triggered by such mods, and prefer to hear barefoot sounds instead, you will have to make patches for them. The patching process is very simple, everyone can do that, you just need SSEdit program: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/164 . Instructions on how to do that can be found on my Fallout 4 version of the mod in the images tab: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/45101 . FO4Edit and SSEdit work the same way, so don't worry that it's for Fallout, you'll get the same results for both games.
