Status: - GOG has released an update fixing the version number problem, and SKSE64 is updated. Thanks to GOG for being extremely responsive on this compatibility issue, and thanks for everyone's patience. edit: MS Defender is currently false-positiving on it; I've reported the problem to Microsoft edit2: MS Defender has corrected their problem

Skyrim 1.6.117x Notes Skyrim was updated by Bethesda to version 1.6.1170 on January 17, 2024. A number of changes to key mods must be made to address the updates made by Bethesda for both the Steam and GOG editions:
SKSE must be updated to version 2.2.6 for the Steam edition of the game. GOG users must update to version 2.2.6 for the GOG edition of the game
Use the latest version of USSEP if you use this mod.
Update any dll-based SKSE plugins to 1.6.117x versions. Mods that have not been updated must be disabled.
If using Engine Fixes (or any other SKSE plugin that requires Address Library), Address Library must be updated to the 1.6.117x version. Also make sure you are using Engine Fixes Part 1 version 6.2.
Hello, I am very new to using mods and worry I am doing something wrong. When I load the game it says "The Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE64) is not running! SkyUI will not work correctly!"
I have tried launching the game through vortex but it does the same thing. What am i doing wrong?
That means one or more of your dll based skse plugins are the incorrect version for your game version. See Step 4 in the sticky note above and review your plugins and make sure they match your game version. The error message should tell you which dll files are the problem. You’ll need to update those mods to the correct versions or uninstall them.
Thank you for your help so far, it says "EngineFixes.dll: couldn't load plugin (0000007E). I can't seem to find such a plugin listed though on vortex. There's probably a very simple thing I'm missing but I honestly can't tell what I'm supposed to do update here
Just uninstall the mod SSE Engine Fixes until you have more experience modding. It has been installed incorrectly. You may want to stay away from skse plugins in general until you understand more about the different kinds of mods and about mod dependencies.
Yes. Your mod manager can help with this. Scripts using new functionality and plugins added by SKSE64 will not work when launching the vanilla game. Do not save under those circumstances.
So I've been playing skyrim moded using Vortex for about a year on my computer with SKSE and had no issues, however I just got a new computer and installed Skyrim and Vortex on it, I went and downloaded all the mods I had been using before, so my lists are the same, but Skyrim now refuses to run, it gets stuck loading the game. I honestly have no idea why it's doing this as the load should be the same on both computers, it runs fine on my old computer, but not on my new computer. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
There are a lot of things to consider (newer versions of those mods and new incompatibilities as a result, list order, SKSE versions, specific mods, etc.) but without deep diving into every possible thing with every possibility my best suggestion would be to disable all of your mods and launch the game. If it works, start with enabling SKSE and launching the game and then enabling more and more things until you find the culprit. I've been in your situation and had to eventually eliminate mods because they just wouldn't play nice on my new PC. Don't know why but if you can boil it down to those culprits you might be able to figure out why. I'd suggest enabling mods by the types; for example I'd enable all my texture replacer mods, then NPC replacers, etc. Each time, I'm loading Skyrim to see if it runs with those new additions. If not, I'm disabling stuff until it does run and figuring out what the problem is and if I can fix it.
I should probably delete this comment as my mistake was very silly, I missed one mod, just one, but an important mod: XP32 Maximum Skeleton Special Extended (XPMSSE). I downloaded that and it worked fine.
I would like to kindly ask if there is any guide on how to create or update skse plugins for mods as I would like to try and update some outdated mods I like to use in my modlist?
Updating native code mods (meaning doing the dev work) is not something that even a very experienced mod developer can do. Specific programming knowledge is needed that is rare. The remaining outdated mods are either extremely difficult to work with, or have a retired mod author and closed permissions.
Got this strange problem where i would start using the .exe and game runs fine but at soon as i click something the game freezes. Now this is the weird part. It sounds like i can click the options from the main menu normally and even start a new game but the screen is frozen to the main menu even when the introduction is playing. Any suggestions? It will be greatly appreciated.
For anyone having problems with the SKSE, some like: REL/Relocation.h(718): Failed to locate a appropriate address library with the path: Data/SKSE/Plugins/versionlib-1-6-1170-0.bin... Or couldn't find skyrimse.exe. (00000002)
2. for the 0000000002 just take all the content in the skse64 folder and drag to the actual Skyrim folder, this way the SKSE and SkyrimEXE are in the same instance.
It's said DLL plugin has failed to load correctly if a new version of skyrim was just released, the plugin needs to be updated. how to solve this? or how to download this mod correctly?
Seems like Im having the same issue, says "DtryKeyUtil.dll: disabled, only compatible with versions earlier than 1.6.629". Have now tried to download SKSE both from nexus and from SKSE's own page, both returning with the same issue.
So thats the message I get when I launch with SKSE, if I ignore the error and keep running the game crash instantly when I try to enter either new game or a load game. If I run without SKSE everything works as intended (The horse on the carriage even died before the visuals rendered, just how it should be)
For information I have checked my skyrim.exe files properties to check if the version I have is matching skse, both are 1.6.1170.0
Thanks, I should have known not everything in the SKSE folder for my game isnt only from SKSE. Got the error message sorted, but still got the same issue where the game crash. But not an SKSE issue I see now, so wont waste your time with that, so just wish me good luck with that 😆
This is so aggravating. I have installed and followed the installation instructions step by step multiple times now. SKSE64 isn't being recognized. I can launch via the loader exe in the root folder, no matter what, it always launches Steam, and then it says it's not running in-game. I can't view MCM or get SkyUI working. Super frustrating.
Experiencing the same problem. Keeps saying it found version 0.0.0, despite having followed ALL installation instructions with the most recent available version. Wish I had good advise but...I'm lost as well.
In 2019 until March 2025 i can still using SKSE both AE version and SE version (depend on Modlist). But suddenly i cannot load SKSE anymore, it is always straight to Skyrim Launcher. On Mod manager like MO2 is not on state lock but will be unlock second after i run the SKSE loader. Done check antivirus, reinstall VC redist and net framework. uninstall windows update. Stil can't work. no log error, create debug log also blank. running with Command prompt is nothing, always run to Skyrim launcher. check event viewer windows, nothing. On skse loader log, no error completed hooked up.
Of course Steam always running.I think something to do with task manager process. PID skyrimse exe not persistent, look like dll loader always being kick from process. Happened after windows update regarding visual studio 2022 security update and vc++ redis 2015-2022. Ask many skyrim discord but No one be able to fix it. Because only on April 3rd skse is running again but on April 4th is not working anymore. Maybe something in windows background process messed up with dll loader
I've tried to repro the issue, but haven't been able to make it happen here. Which version of Windows are you using, and which virus scanner are you using?
"Hook.cpp(32): A pattern has failed to match. This means the plugin is incompatible with the current version of the game (1.6.1770). Head to themod page of this plugin to see if an update is available."
nekrofyl: That error message is coming from a mod you have installed. Reading the message carefully may tell you which mod it is. As the message says, the mod (not SKSE) is out of date. If you can't tell, remove everything from Data/SKSE/Plugins, and re-add files until you've narrowed it down.

Skyrim 1.6.117x Notes

Or
couldn't find skyrimse.exe. (00000002)
Here's the fixes:
1. for the REL/Relocation you need to download this mod: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/32444?tab=files&file_id=320262&nmm=1
2. for the 0000000002 just take all the content in the skse64 folder and drag to the actual Skyrim folder, this way the SKSE and SkyrimEXE are in the same instance.
Quick fix.
how to solve this? or how to download this mod correctly?
