March 2022 UPDATE:

An MO2 version of this guide is in progress. With that in mind, there will start to be files that apply only to this guide that are only to be used when instructed. The MO2 guide is not currently officially ready. More info will be posted here when it is.

Nov 2021 UPDATE:

You can download plugins.txt from the downloads tab to make sure you have the correct load order. You don't really need this file if you've followed the current version of the guide, but it will be helpful down the road when I've created a conflict resolution patch to glue the load order together better than the merged and bashed patches do.

Oct 2021 UPDATE:

I've moved this guide away from a downloadable text file to an online guide on Blogger:

fusroguide.blogspot.com

This guide continues to support Skyrim SE pre-Anniversary Edition, and uses 1. a direct download link for USSEP and 2. links to important mods that the mod author has decided to host Elsweyr.

Please use the comment feature there to comment on specific pages. Comments and suggestions are welcome. Changes were made, including removing a few items, adding new items, and chasing down items that have left the Nexus but are too precious to forego. Also, with the increasing prevalence of ESL plugins and ESL-flagged plugins, it's no longer necessary to merge plugins while following this guide.

Like bandits, this guide gets more brazen every day.

This is a player modding guide for Skyrim Special Edition. It covers:
  • Software installation
  • Preparatory work for adding mods
  • A list of mods to install organized by category (though not necessarily Nexus categories)
  • Instructions on proper sorting
  • Instructions on creating merged and bashed patches
  • Instructions on merging plugins
  • Tips and troubleshooting hints

This guide is the result of many hours of playing and modding Special Edition, as well as having learned many valuable things from others.

This is intended to be an active document, for which comments and constructive criticisms are welcome and sometimes incorporated into the guide.

This guide will be supported by me as much as possible. Please leave a comment here or on Blogger if you need help. I don't have broadband where I currently live, so please be patient if you have a question.

A big thank-you to anghellic1666 for using this guide and providing valuable feedback.
