Making ESL - I looked into this some more and it seems it is doable but because of the existence of scripts for the dog, face data for Holgar, and the SEQ file I just added to fix a bug, it is a complicated matter and likely not to occur any time soon. See this guide for more details.
Adding a summoning spell or item for the dog as an in game quick bug fix due to the general bugginess of Skyrim in general. - Added as of version 1.0.3
Adding dog petting and treat mechanics. - Treat mechanic added as of version 1.0.3
Please note that I could not get the Creation Kit to make a BSA with version 1.0.3 for whatever reason and I noticed after the fact that I have not seen a new script in my script folder, but it the script functions (at least in my game). I found them in a folder where they should not have been. Via scripting is the only way to learn shouts (vanilla or modded as far as I have found) in game without console and the script for this one should run the first time the new journal added to the house is picked up. If it doesn't, use console to search for Mid, Mir, and Ov (classified as WOOP) to get the ID depending on load order (they should be something like xx107e87, xx107e88, xx107e89), use console command player.teachword "ID" then player.setav dragonsouls 3. Please let me know if the shout functions and if the voice lines play the correct voice type.
Adding a set home mechanic so that the dog will sandbox in a player home of choice rather than just this mod's home.
If in demand, a fireplace that consumes firewood and needs to be lighted after burning for a period of time.
If in demand, add a minor quest or dialogue to tell Gerdur about Holgar's fate.
I am not comfortable messing with the intro quest to make Ralof recognize Holgar in the section where he runs up to Gunjar's body since, as far as I can tell, I have not broken the vanilla start with my tweaks or made incompatibilities with vanilla start tweak or overhaul mods and I prefer to keep it that way.
I currently do not have the technical knowhow to do the above so any suggestions or pointers to guides would be appreciated.
I have done some experimentation with DarkFox127's A Horse's Life and A Dog's Life and found that A Horse's Life does add the dialogue for horse ridding to Buddy. I added the "Potential Animal Faction" to Buddy and this removed the dialogue from him and the I'm Glad You're Here mod now uses the correct dialogue for pets so I will be uploading this fix along with some of the improved functions once I finish.
A Dog's Life still does not apply to Buddy because of the custom race and he still uses the vanilla textures due to the method I followed in DarkFox127's Advanced Animal Followers Tutorial. I am currently trying to get the race to load vanilla textures that can be affected by other husky texture mods.
The only reason I made a custom race is because there are multiple types of dog races in the Creation Kit, the standard and then a special companion version for dog followers. The Kit had a bare husky companion race but did not load the vanilla husky textures when previewing and the non companion bare husky race could not interact with doors and so could not follow inside interior cells.
I started a new game with "Alternate Start Live Another Life" and ASLAL Dragonborn extension" and everything works great except there's no dialogue for the dog and he didn't follow me. Everything else is great. The loot is really useful but not over the top. The house is really good everything you need to start with. Great for a starter home. Apart from the dog not following, it was all good. Also forgot to mention I'm om 1.5.97 so it does work OK
That's good. With the dog, did you try saving and reloading? In my game when I start a new game for the very first time with the dog, he has no dialogue options but they will show up after saving and reloading. Apparently, it's a bug with mod added dialogue explained at the end of this video, which I used to make Buddy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEVu-ujB9XU
Also, sometimes after he gets knocked down in combat, dialogue options will show but can't be selected. Hitting him with a healing hands spell fixes this for me.
Thanks for your reply. I started a new game twice with your mod and no dialogue both times. All good, Everything else is useful for starting a new game
Thank you. If you use the Creation Kit, feel free to poke around. I looked around Skyrim in the kit to see how Bethesda did things to get some things working and I don't think I messed up anything but you never know. I would appreciate any help in finding bugs or potential conflicts and how to fix them.
I am not sure if it will work with 1.5. The master files are the Skyrim, the DLCs and then the update.esm (which may be only AE). I can see if I can find somebody who knows if it will work with the 1.5 versions or know a way to make it compatible. I only have 1.6 because I put off getting the new Skyrim for so long since I had Legendary. I am still learning how and why things are compatible with the different versions of the game.
I looked at some steam discussions on the difference between SE and AE and have come to the conclusion that it actually should work with 1.5 because I did not use any Creation Club content. Sorry for the confusion; I was not sure if AE was really a requirement. See the Version Compatibility article I put with links to the discussions on version differences if you want to know more.
I noticed that my fire does not have any crackling so I am working on adding that and tweaking the dinning table to be decorated with something besides mead.
