About this mod

Removes the annoying glow from plants and trees under certain conditions. This fix is different from the one in Fixed Mesh Lighting because it addresses a completely different issue. Meshes only, no ESPs.

Changelogs
This mod removes the annoying glow from plants and trees during certain hours of the day in certain weathers. The glow is caused by a cheap subsurface scattering method that uses the Soft_lighting flag in meshes. (This is a different issue than the one fixed by Fixed Mesh Lighting.) It's supposed to simulate the reflection of light through the plant, but it causes plants to glow even in the shade. To correct the problem, I disabled the Soft_lighting flag in plants/trees that exhibit the problem. See screenshots for before/after comparisons. The screenshots were taken with Obsidian Weathers, Re-engaged ENB, and EVLaS, but the problem exists with or without ENB.

Compatibility

  • Fixed Mesh Lighting: 100% compatible. Changes from Fixed Mesh Lighting are included. Be sure to place this mod AFTER Fixed Mesh Lighting. Thank you to the author for the open modification permissions!
  • Happy Little Trees: 100% compatible since HLT includes these changes in it. Be sure that HLT overwrites this mod since the models are different. I include some meshes that HLT doesn't have, so my mod is still needed.
  • Blubbo Trees Variations: If you use the "no vanilla" version, then it's 100% compatible and you definitely need my mod. If you use the regular version (first download in that mod) then my mod is NOT NEEDED because Blubbo covers all the same plants and trees and he makes the same changes I did to prevent glowing.
  • Enhanced Vanilla Trees: Partially compatible. I was unable to get permission to modify EVT's assets, so let EVT overwrite the main download (there are other plants and trees in it not touched by EVT). If you'd like to fix EVT's trees yourself, see the guide at the bottom of this page.
  • Skyrim 3D Trees and Plants: Compatibility is unknown since many of the vanilla plants and trees are not even used by S3D Trees. Unfortunately permissions do not allow changes to S3D Trees, but it is still 100% safe to install this mod and let S3D Trees overwrite it.
  • Static Mesh Improvement Mod: 100% compatible because SMIM touches only one of these meshes, and its changes were included via Fixed Mesh Lighting.
  • Various other tree and plant mods: Let other mods overwrite this mod. See below on how to test and make changes yourself to plants and trees that you see glowing in the shade.

Do I even need this mod?

If you'd like to test your own modlist to see if you have this issue, follow the directions below.

1. The easiest place to test this is probably Whiterun. Travel to Whiterun using this console command: coc whiterunorigin
2. Go to the south side of town where some yellow bushes are.
3. Change the time to 6:15 pm using this console command: set gamehour to 18.25
4. Change the weather to clear using this console command: fw 81a
5. Look at the bushes to see if they glow. If they don't, walk around town to check other bushes. Then try changing the weather to '10a240' and check again (fw 10a240).
6. You can also try 7 pm (set gamehour to 19). Be sure to change the weather back to one of the 2 clear weathers above every time you change the time because Skyrim often changes the weather at each small time change.
7. Rorikstead is another good place to test. Use 'coc roriksteadexterior01' to go there, then look at the trees after changing time and weather.

How do I make these changes myself?

You can request a patch for plant/tree meshes not covered in this mod, or you can opt to perform the fix yourself by following the directions below.

1. In game, find the mesh (*.nif file) for the particular tree/plant by using More Informative Console and clicking on the plant in the console.
2. Outside the game, in MO2, locate the mesh by typing its filename in the search box under the Data tab on the right side. When you find it, hover the mouse over it in the list and it will tell you what mod it's from, and you'll also see the path name.
3. Open the mesh file with Nifskope and click on the foilage (don't worry if it appears pink, just ignore that). That should highlight the BSTriShape node on the left. Expand that node and then click on BSLightinShaderProperty.
4. At the bottom of the screen you should be able to find the "Shader Flags 2" settings. UNCHECK the Soft_lighting flag in that list to remove it, then save your changes.

Note for EVT users: Below are the tree meshes in EVT you'll want to edit to remove their glow. Note that you may want to rerun Dyndolod to make things match up, but if you don't I doubt you'll see any problems anyway.
