this might not be the place to be posting this- but I'll try anyways as I've been following the guide here.

I'm going through a near immediate CTD trying to install the four free creation club addon's along with the most recent USSEP. Having all four of them enabled along with USSEP causes a crash. Disabling USSEP (or any one of the free addons while USSEP is enabled) doesn't cause a crash. And I've tried installing the free addon's and CC content using both the Curation Club plugin & Anniversary Edition Content Picker methods. Both run into the issue.

Any idea what could be happening?

What version? If you downgraded to 1.6.640 or lower, it's probably BEES (https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/106441). Immediate CTD at main menu is a tell-tale sign. This is outlined in my setup guides. The USSEP updated to use the new plugin headers that came with 1.6.1130 (to extend ESL plugin count up to 4096), so if it's enabled and you can't make it past the main menu, this is probably the reason. Free CC content also updated in 1.6.1130 to include the new headers so again, probably also the issue.

If using Skyrim VR the equivalent fix can be found in Skyrim VR ESL Support (https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/106712).

I just realized I probably should have mentioned that I was trying to do this for VR, m̶y̶ b̶a̶d̶
But if you meant which version of USSEP, then the current one, v4.3.1 is the one that I'm using. Trying to do the "best of both worlds,"
As for the VR ESL support, already have that installed along with them.

Welp- still not entirely sure what the specific problem child was in all of this, but I did manage to fix the issue. I eventually decided to have steam check the integrity of the files for special edition with all of the anniversary edition stuff downloaded, and it said that two files were unable to be found / verified (or what ever the exact word is) and went about reacquiring them. After that- I just ran back the steps of porting them over to VR and all is good. I think that those two files might have just hit the super rare occurrence of getting corrupted during the download.

      ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thank you for such a detailed guide to installing and downscaling Skyrim!
I have successfully followed your downscale guide for reverting back to 1.5.97 while keeping the CC content. I also installed the updated masters from the latest version as you described.
However, when I try to follow your guide for cleaning the masters, there is one part that is very confusing for me.
I now have two sets of masters: the masters for 1.5.97 and the updated masters as a mod..
When I open xedit for cleaning, which masters am I actually cleaning????
I assume it would be the masters for 1.5.97. But since we also have the updated masters as a mod within MO2, should they also be cleaned??? Or are they fine as they are because they are functioning as a mod?
Apologies if this is so obvious that you didn't think you had to explain it. I am that one odd person who will find the one thing that didn't get explained and  end up confused by it!
Where I get confused is that when we clean the masters we are told to put them into a folder that gets inserted into MO2 as "Clean Masters". So now we would have the regular masters, a mod called "Updated Masters", and another mod called "Clean Masters".
It gets me totally confused as to which masters are actually being used by the game.

Sorry for any confusion. The order should be:

      • Original masters (in this case, your 1.5.97 masters) - these don't always have to be a "mod" in your load order, they could just be the files that exist in your main Skyrim game directory, etc..
      • Updated masters (from the latest version) - these will overwrite any masters in your current Skyrim game folder (this is intentional as you want the latest masters to overwrite any "old" masters for compatibility reasons)
      • Cleaned Skyrim Masters - these should be a COPY of the 4 master files (update.esm, dawnguard.esm, hearthfires.esm, and dragonborn.esm) from the Updated Masters mod you have. These should overwrite the ones in your Updated masters mod. Again we want to use the latest Skyrim Masters, and in this case, we're just "cleaning" a copy of the 4 main master files that get cleaned.

      Hope this helps.

Thank you for the quick response!  Yes, this did help immensely!
Like i said,  I seem to be one of those people who have a knack for finding that one thing that will leave me confused.  I really am finding your guides to be very helpful.

I always use Batch Plugin Cleaner for Mod Organizer which automatizes the plugin cleaning process. Maybe you should mention it even if you don't intend to explain how to use it... Anyways, the author explains it on the mod's description page.

Nice guide by the way. People who play Bethesda games look for this kind of tutorial when starting a modded playthrough. I did it this week before starting on Fallout 4.

I hadn't seen this. I may include this as a callout in my cleaning guide. As with all my guides I like to teach the fundamentals through a manual process to give users a better understanding of what they are doing, so it won't replace those steps entirely. Thanks for the feedback.

As an update, I have added a section for this plugin to version 1.6.7 of the cleaning guide. I was in process of updating formatting of all my guides anyway. Thanks for the tip!

    Let me tell you that this is a b s o l u t e l y the BEST guide I've ever tried (and believe me, I've tried a LOT!).
Well written, easy-to-understand, easy upgradable, clear in the most important details (number of version, just to say one that most modders forget to indicate in Wabbajack) and not pretending to indicate what is best, but leaving to poor players like me, to choose their own poison eheh.
So, thank you thank you THANK YOU !
If only I could, I'd give you TONS of endorsments

    Great Job !
