BRIEF OVERVIEW
This mod introduces Woodcraft to Skyrim, and is designed to complement realistic bow replacer mods like Real Bows or Bowgasm AIO replacer. All bows and shields are now made of wood.  Introduces 3 new types of wood used to craft bows and shields: Werewood, Merwood, and Ebony Wood (and Fire wood still exists, of course). This mod was made with compatibility in mind.

FEATURES
  •     3 new types of wood added: Werewood (for making hunting-, long-, nordic-, and imperial bows/shields), Merwood (for making all elvish and elvish-like bows/shields), and Ebony wood (for making ebony and daedric bows/shields). Firewood is used to make glass bows and shields.
  •     The new wood types are added to all blacksmiths in Skyrim. They are added to levelled lists through a simple script, so no bashed patch is required, and it should be compatible with mod-added blacksmith.
  •     Crafting & tempering recipes for bows and shields were changed (see “How to craft/temper” below). To ensure compatibility with perk overhauls, crafting only requires a high enough smithing skill, but no perks are required. Tempering enchanted bows/shields also requires a high enough smithing skill, and no perks.
  •     Bows are now created at tanning racks, as the smithing forge did not make any sense. Unfortunately, a grindstone is still required to improve bows. However, see “Highly recommended mods” to fix that also.
  •     Shields now use meshes and textures from the Mega Shields mod (see requirements), to properly reflect that they’re made of wood. Bows meshes and textures are NOT touched, since mods like Real Bows and Bowgasm AIO replacer already replace bow (see “Highly recommended mods").

HOW TO CRAFT/TEMPER
The new wood types can be bought from any blacksmith. The wood types are added to the blacksmith vendor levelled list by script, so it should be compatible with mod-added blacksmiths.
The wood types are not abundant, to keep things difficult.
Each type of wood is used for different types of bows and shields:
  •      Werewood: Used for crafting Nordic/imperial bows/shields, as well as bows that were already wooden in Vanilla skyrim (long bow, hunting bow, etc.).
  •     Merewood: Used for crafting all elven and evlish-like bows/shields.
  •     Ebony wood: Used for crafting Ebony and Daedric bows/shields (Daedric bows/shields also require a Daedra heart).
  •     Fire wood: Fire wood is used for crafting Glass bows/shields (also requires Refined Malachite).

To craft a bow, you need 1 piece of the appropriate wood and some leather strips, and for some bows some additional materials.
To craft a shield, you need 2 pieces of the appropriate wood and the appropriate metal ingot, and for some shields some additional materials.

Tempering requirements for bows: To temper bows, you need to same materials as to craft them, except no wood is required. Enchanted bows also require the appropriate smithing skill level (same skill as required for crafting).
Tempering requirements for shields: To temper shields, you need to same materials as to craft them, except no wood is required. Enchanted shields also require the appropriate smithing skill level (same skill as required for crafting).

(UN)INSTALLATION & REQUIREMENTS
This mod requires the following mods:
  •     USLEEP.
  •     The Elvish weapons mod by Jet4571. Only the texture folder and its contents are required, you can disable the esp from Elvish Weapons.
  •     The Megashields mod by TheMalfazar. Only the texture folder and its contents are required, you can disable the esp from Mega Shields.

Install with your favourite Mod manager. It’s just an esp with some meshes for the shields.
If you don’t like the new shields, feel free the remove the meshes folder, or perhaps install your favourite shield replacer instead.
You can uninstall it also. It only contains one script, and it only fires at the game start, so it should be safe to uninstall at any time.

If you like this mod, please endorse this mod as well as the Mega Shields and Elvish Weapons mods. Thank you in advance!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED MODS
  •     Real bows or Bowgasm AIO replacer: Wood Craft was actually made to compliment these 2 mods. Both replace the appearance of the bows with more realistic, wooden bows.
  •     Real weapons replacer: Replaces vanilla melee weapons with their historical counterparts; goes well with Real bows or Bowgasm.
  •     Immersive Archery: Skyrim pretends that you can pull the string of a bow and just take your bloody time aiming. Hence the stealth archer build is overpowered. But this is unrealistic: Pulling a bow requires a lot of strength and stamina (that arrow isn’t going to shoot itself!). Immersive Archery makes it so that pulling the string requires stamina, and also shakes the camera to make aiming difficult like real life.
  •     IPM Insane armory – Shields; Wood Craft replaces some of the more ridiculous looking shields, but not all of them. This mod makes shields thinner. Load IPM Insane Armory Shields BEFORE Wood Craft.
  •     Skyrealism crafting kits: Gives the player portable alternative crafting & tempering kits. I recommend this, because tempering bows with a grindstone is just idiotic. Load order is irrelevant.
  •     Equipment Durability System (SKSE): SKSE plugin that implements weapon and armor degradation system without all the hassle of most other mods.

COMPATIBILITY
This mod was made with compatibility in mind. That means the following:
  •     No bashes/smashed patch or whatever need: the new wood types are added to levelled lists through scripts.
  •     Perk requirements are not implemented in the new crafting and tempering recipes, only Smithing levels are required. This is to ensure compatibility with perk mods. But Wood Craft must be loaded AFTER any perk overhauls, otherwise this won’t work.
  •     Bows and shields that were not craftable in Vanilla skyrim have not been touched, to ensure compatibility with other mods.
  •     Wood Craft does not edit NPCs, crafting stations, tempering stations, or anything like that. So mods that edit them should be compatible. Note, however, that with Wood Craft installed bows are crafted via the tanning rack, not the forge.
  •     Campfire, hunterborn, wood cutter, Dynamic Things, and other mods that add wood or wood collecting systems are compatible. However, Werewood, Merwood, and Ebony Wood will still only be obtainable from Blacksmiths. This actually makes somewhat sense, since Merwood and Ebony wood are unlikely to be found in Skyrim.
  •     New land mods are compatible. If the blacksmiths in the new land mods use the same levelled lists as vanilla Blacksmiths, you’ll also find the new wood types there.

There, however, some incompatibilities:
  • Mods that edit crafting and tempering recipes of the bows and shields are incompatible. Perk overhauls are compatible, provided Wood Craft loads AFTER the perk overhaul.
  • Mods that remove levelled lists from blacksmiths are not compatible, as this mod adds wood to blacksmiths. Luckily, I don’t know of any mods that actually remove levelled lists from blacksmiths, so I suppose you probably don’t have to worry about it.

LOAD ORDER / PRIORITY ORDER
So the Load order / priority order would be something like this:
Skyrim
Update
DLCs
USLEEP (required)
...other mods...
Perk overhauls / crafting recipes overhauls (if any)
Highly recommended mods (see above)
Wood Craft
...other mods...

CREDITS
Special thanks to Bert’s Bits and Pieces Modders Resources, which provides the script to add the new wood types to the levelled lists.
The shield replacers were based on  Jet4571’s Elvish weapons mod and  TheMalfazar’s Megashields mod. Both mod authors allow using their assests (according to the mod pages’ permission & credits sub-section), and of course I give them my thanks. Note that you still need the textures from both mods in order for WoodCrafts shields to appear correctly in game.
Special thanks to Bethesda for making Skyrim.
