When it comes to role-playing games, sometimes you start with a fully-formed character concept in mind while other times you may find it more fun to randomly generate characters and find out who they are.

The goal of this mod is to provide a uniquely fun challenge for adventurous players looking to be surprised. Turn the game into a roguelite and see if you can beat it with a randomized character in a permadeath challenge. Or pair it with the New Vegas Randomizer to make the experience even wackier. Unable to stop yourself from falling back into making the same character build every time you play? Roll the dice and try something new.

Iterating on the design of a previously released mod of mine, I have expanded it to not only randomly determine your character's appearance (including race, sex, facial proportions, eyes, hair, and head parts), but also randomly roll for your character's SPECIAL scores, Tag skills and Traits.

The mod is automatically able to detect any of the races, hair styles, eye types and traits from any other mods you may have in your load order, making patching unnecessary. So go crazy and play with all your race and perk mods. The number of traits you receive is also determined by the ITraitMenuMaxNumTraits (2 by default) so, if you have customized that setting with a different value, you will automatically receive the correct number of traits. Additionally, the script checks for whether the bEnableBigGunsSkill from JIP LN NVSE is enabled, so TTW players and those who just prefer restoring this cut skill will be able to roll a character with that skill tagged.

The following settings can be tweaked in the mod's configuration file according to user preference:

  • Whether or not you are using the vanilla Vigor Tester (for alt. start mods that use CharGen menu instead). ([bNoVigorTester] in config, 0 by default)
  • The number of SPECIAL points to distribute in the Vigor Tester menu. ([fSPECIALPointPool] in config, 40 by default)
  • The number of SPECIAL points to distribute in the CharGen menu. ([fSPECIALClickPool] in config, 33 (i.e. 40 - 7 for minimum 1 in each) by default)
  • Whether hair color is randomized. ([bIncludeHairDye] in config, on by default)
  • Whether all races, hair and eyes are available, including races flagged unplayable. ([bIncludeUnplayable] in config, off by default)
  • Whether you can tweak the results after randomization. Note traits cannot be changed regardless. ([bHardcore] in config, off by default)

There is a bug which can be encountered when playing as a race without 1st person hand textures in the game files (referred to as the "pink hands" bug) where the hands appear bright pink to indicate a missing texture. Due to Fallout: New Vegas not including 1st person textures for the hands of certain races like raiders and ghouls, this mod fixes the bug by reusing the 3rd person hand textures for the required 1st person files. Fallout 3 actually has proper 1st person versions of these textures in its game files so those using a mod that provides upscale skin textures for raiders, ghouls, tribals, lobotomites and marked men will not be affected.

In testing, the SPECIAL attribute randomizer sometimes fails to allocate a single point. I haven't been able to narrow down why. If this occurs, simply increase one of your attributes manually or reload to a save before accessing the SPECIAL menu and the results will be rerolled again.

This mod's scripts run once during character creation and then terminate afterwards. It makes no edits or overwrites to vanilla records and thus load order does not matter. The quest is stopped after and the event handlers and strings used by those scripts are removed once complete, meaning that this *should* be safe to uninstall after use (as much as anything is in this game).
