This is a bit of a criticism, so let me first say that I am not trying to insult your work. I think the pistol looks great.

I am a bit of a gun nut though. I collect weapons, everything from old muskets to Civil War weapons to WWI and WWII weapons, and I also have modern revolvers and semi-auto pistols. As someone who has a better understanding of how firearms work than the typical FNV player, seeing the slide go back just makes me go wtf, that's not how that works.

The slide on a semi-auto is part of the reloading mechanism. Typically, the gun feeds from a magazine in the grip. There are different mechanisms, but typically the gun fires, the slide gets pushed back either from recoil or it gets pushed back by gases from the exploding gunpowder, and the slide moving back ejects the old round and picks up the next round from the spring-loaded magazine.

That's not how pepperbox guns like this work. They have four fixed barrels, and typically use a break action. They have no slide. As you pull the trigger, a ratchet mechanism is rotated by a lever from the trigger and selects the next barrel for firing. You shoot one barrel, and the next trigger pull rotates the ratchet mechanism to the next barrel, repeating until all four barrels have been fired. Then you break open the action (which ejects all four spent cartridges) , load four more rounds, and you are ready to go. These are typically concealable or backup weapons and you don't usually expect to need more than four shots.

The advantage of the pepperbox design is that you can make the gun smaller since there is no magazine in the grip. The disadvantage is you only get four shots. Hence, it's ideal for a small concealable gun or for a backup gun.

Most pepperbox pistols like this are smaller in caliber, simply because shooting a larger round like the .357 can be a bit painful in a gun this small and light due to the recoil. But your pistol is about the same size as a real-world pepperbox like the Cop Backup .357 Derringer. So there's no problem at all with your gun's size or the round that it shoots. Since the .357 is a bit unwieldy, the Cop Backup was also made in a smaller .22 version. Just a suggestion, you might want to also have a smaller .22 option.

The only problem with your pistol is that the slide moves.

It needs to fire four single-shots, then needs a break-action reload (I haven't downloaded your mod yet so I don't know what reload animation you are using), and the "slide" part needs to not be a slide, i.e. it doesn't move. The front part of the "slide" rotates up when you break the pistol open and the back part is part of the frame. Neither part moves while the pistol is being fired. Think of the top of the pistol more as a frame or barrel holder instead of a slide.

Here is a video showing the Cop Backup in action:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4ULyMeh3bw

Note that there is no slide moving, and the pistol breaks open for reloading. He has some issues reloading but that has more to do with the design of this particular pistol. It's not a problem for pepperbox pistols in general. He also grunts a few times. I'm not sure if he's complaining about the recoil or the inaccuracy of the pistol. Pepperbox pistols like these tend to be inaccurate since all four barrels are off-center.

Again, I'm not insulting your work. I think the pistol looks great. The slide is the only thing that bothers me. Make it so that the slide doesn't move and gun nuts like me will be happy. That is something that can easily be fixed in NifSkope.

    Good job on the modeling.

WTF? The slide doesn't move at all... I'm pretty experienced with firearms as well and I know full well how they work. I tested the gun extensively, even going so far as to pause it during the firing cycle, etc. and I can tell you the slide does not move. There are no moving parts on the gun at all during firing, especially since the NIF nodes are not named to even make movement possible.

What you are seeing is the recoil from the gun pushing it straight back, which might give the optical illusion of the slide moving, especially if you're aiming down the sights. If you don't believe me, I suggest you enter third-person view, fire the gun and open the console to pause the game. You'll see the slide doesn't move at all.

All of your pictures except the first one show the slide clearly back.

Have you even tried the weapon in-game? Those are two completely different meshes. The barrels are exposed on the base-game-only version.

Oh. Never mind then. I've never seen a modern style pepperbox with exposed barrels.

I wanted to use the hinge from the .32 revolver so that the break-action animation would look totally correct. Unfortunately, that meant I couldn't cover the barrels with the housing because then it would obstruct the hinge. After I finished making that mesh, I thought it looked hideous, so I designed a new one that abandoned the hinge, meaning I was then free to completely cover the barrels.

"Better" is subjective. Mine is made using entirely base-game assets, meaning you don't have to install any new textures.

This is one of those weapons of yours that I feel could seamlessly fit in the vanilla game, or be added in a DLC. The alternate mesh is definitely the go-to for this weapon as well. I always think of the scene in Blade Runner where Leon shoots Holden when I see one of these pistols. It'll be a great companion piece with That Gun. Excellent work as always.

Thank you! And yeah, I agree the alternate mesh is my preferred choice going forward. That's the one I'm going to use for the Mega-Pack version.

Personally I think the proportions are just right, good job on making such a unique weapon.

When I first saw this it reminded me of the shortstop from TF2 https://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Shortstop. Because of that, I was wondering if you could make one of his scatter guns https://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Scattergun by combining the sawed-off and lever action shotguns.
