At the moment not. The .tbl format is still being analyzed within the community. You can however change the .xml files directly and delete the corresponding .tbl file. The .tbl files seem to just be a compiled version of the xml files, possibly to speed things up.
tbl format used to be used to contain metadata from a XMSimpleTable object class. So the tbl file should just be a column descriptor, limits, etc to the xml file
