A set of instructions on how to get Keynuker working with your entire load order.

keyNuker is a good idea. Why this wasn't incorporated into the game is a complete mystery. As usual modders have to fix the things that Bethesda won't. This is a set of instructions on how to get the original mod to work with your entire load order without endless editing or patching. In order for this method to work you need the original mod, FO4Edit, and Complex Item Sorter. A working knowledge of FO4Edit is helpful.

The following instructions will vary slightly between Vortex and MO2. I use MO2. If you aren't using a mod manager why are you torturing  yourself? Also FO4Edit and xEdit are the same thing so don't be confused by the different names. Also the game treats keys and passwords the same so I can only refer to "keys" and you get the point.

1. Download the keyNuker mod. Only the main file is necessary. No optional files of any kind are required. If you already have it I suggest another download and chose "replace" rather than "merge" so any other files there are removed.

2. Download and install FO4Edit if you haven't already. If you haven't you'll have a bit of a learning curve but for this instance it isn't hard.

3. Download and install Complex Item Sorter using the instructions on that page.

4. Download the modified Item Sorter Tags file I have uploaded on this page. Find the original file at YourFO4EditInstallFolder>Edit Scripts>M8r Complex Item Sorter>Plugins. Unzip and replace the original ini file with mine.

5. Run Complex Item Sorter on your ENTIRE load order using instructions on that page. Make sure the output file is at the bottom of your load order. Basically:
  • Load your ENTIRE load order into FO4Edit
  • Right click anywhere in the mod list and chose "Apply Script..."
  • From the drop down chose "M8r_ComplexSorter" and then click Ok
  • The default options are fine. The changes need for keyNuker are in the replaced ini. If you don't want your entire load order sorted see Caveats.

6. Run the game. All keys and passwords should now be sorted into the keyring.

How this works:
keyNuker looks for a required prefix (or suffix) attached to the name of the key and sorts those items into the keyring. Before every record from every mod that had keys needed to be edited with that prefix in order to be sorted. Patching hell. This method uses Complex Item Sorter to add that prefix to every record in your load order that has the "_key" keyword regardless of what that load order contains. All modified records are included in the one output file. When the game loads all records are automatically sorted. Luckily keyNuker is looking at the actual name of the record and not any kind of keyword or this method wouldn't work.

Caveats:
1. This method will sort every item in your inventory. If you don't like that you can turn off everything but KEYM in the Complex Item Sorter GUI. In the lower left box labeled Record Types click Change and uncheck everything but KEYM. If you do that and it works leave a comment. This method would be much easier than modifying the ini file.

2. If you spend any time in the Pip Boy you'll notice that there will be multiple entries of the keyring. This is default behavior. All but one will clear when you close the Pip Boy.

3. If you try to scroll through the keyring you will be periodically returned to the top when the keyring refreshes, making it all but impossible to scroll the list. This is default behavior. I've never had a reason to scroll this list.

Options for slightly advanced users:
The keyNuker esp has only two functions. It renamed all the base game keys with the required prefix and it allowed the BA2 archive to be unpacked. Once the Complex Item Sorter output file is created the keyNuker esp becomes essentially a dummy file that exists to unpack the keyNuker BA2. If you unpack the BA2 to loose files you can do away with the esp completely. Now you've added a plugin for Complex Item Sorter and lost one for keyNuker. Net Zero on plugin count.
