About this mod

Beyond the Commonwealth is a community-wide initiative to bring music created by members of the Fallout 4 community into quest and new location mods that currently do not have any.

Permissions and credits

Music lies at the heart of any great gaming experience.  It can help add to the sense of wonder, terror, excitement, or joy a person feels when exploring a new environment and can play a significant part in leaving a lasting impact.  I've played a lot of great quest and new location mods in Fallout 4 over the years, but the one thing that always consistently stood out to me as missing for many was great music.  I've also come across a lot of great music produced by the community in the form of music mods that replace pieces of the vanilla soundtrack and which I feel deserve more praise and exposure.  From this, a bold and ambitious idea came to blossom between myself and the co-creator of this mod, Mortercotic

Together, we worked to secure permissions from several authors of the best Fallout 4 music mods on the Nexus to use their music to accentuate the environments of some of our favorite quest and new location mods.  After securing all the permissions we could, we began poring through all the amazing music we had on-hand and thematically matching it to each quest/new location we wanted to address with this release.  A lot of careful consideration and testing went into ensuring the music selected for each quest/new location mod fit the environments perfectly so as to enhance the experience of being there and not detract from it.  Mortercotic did the work of creating "patch plugins" against each quest/new location mod of interest to assign the new music selections to the locations of each mod in a way that would require installing the original quest/new location mod but not the original music mod (and so this is why perms were needed from each music mod author but not each quest mod author as we have simply created purely optional non-replacer patch plugins that merely add music to locations in the quest/new location mod).  Nevertheless, we worked to secure permissions to create these patch plugins for the quest/new location mods as well just to be safe.

And so with all that long-winded backstory out of the way, we now present to you Beyond the Commonwealth - our coordinated initiative to help draw attention to some great music mods and quest/new location mods and revitalize the context behind both the music and the environments tied together into one.  Below is a list of what we've accomplished so far and that is now available for you to download from this mod page and use in your playthrough as you please.

Simply install the original quest/new location mod (listed on the left) in your mod manager of choice (MO2 or Vortex) and then install the music patch for it from the Files tab of this mod page and load it AFTER the quest/new location mod it adds music to.  You do NOT need to install the music mods linked below for the music to work.  Songs and music mods are only listed below for credits/thanks.  Just install the quest mod listed on the left and then the music patch for it from here which includes the necessary music assets.

The Mannequin Cult (quest mod) - "MUS_Dungeon_07" from Fallout 4 - Orkus Postapocalyptic Soundtrack by Orkus.

Commonwealth Express Courier Stations - "Metallic Monks" and "Vault of the Future" from the Fallout 1 soundtrack by Mark Morgan.  "Modoc", "Redding", and "Arroyo" from the Fallout 2 soundtrack by Mark Morgan.  "City 1" and "City 2" (real names?) from Bleak Beauty by OrganicView/Captain Creepy.

Inside Jobs - "Dungeon 1" and "Dungeon 2" from Bleak Beauty by OrganicView/Captain Creepy.  "Metal Corridors" from Capital Ruins by G00fed.  "Urban Textures I" and "Urban Textures II" from Radium - A Music Mod by Jared Alexander Johnson.  "In the Depths" from Lost World by ScreamingLake.

Subways of the Commonwealth - Standalone - "Translucent" and "Moonbeams" from Lost World by ScreamingLake.  "Subway Sanctuary" custom track by ScreamingLake.

Vault 1080 - "Metro Tunnels", "Empty Shelves (ALT 1)", and "Metro Tunnels (ALT)" from Capital Ruins by G00fed.

Claustrophobia - "Buried Nations" and "Hell in a Chamber" from Nuclear Armageddon by xrendermax.  "MUS_Dungeon_05" and "MUS_Dungeon_07" from DV's Custom F4 Soundtrack by DeutscherVolker.

Stumble Upon Interiors - "Fallout" and "Sand Serenade" from Nuclear Armageddon by xrendermax.  "MUS_Explore_Day_02" from Fallout 4 - Orkus Postapocalyptic Soundtrack by Orkus.  "Lonesome Bay" from Radium - A Music Mod by Jared Alexander Johnson.  "MUS_Explore_Day_04" from DV's Custom F4 Soundtrack by DeutscherVolker.  "Ambient 2" from Bleak Beauty by OrganicView/Captain Creepy.

NOTE:  Fallout 1 and 2 soundtracks by Mark Morgan are authorized for use under this project as they are registered under Public Domain which is also how this music mod is able to use them without being removed.

Ensure these lines are present in your Fallout4.ini file so that your game can load loose files.

If you are an author of a quest/new location mod that currently has no music implemented and are interested in us adding some from our library or if you are a music mod author that has music published within the Fallout 4 community (or otherwise thematically fitting) and want to add to our project music library please reach out via nexus DM!

This is only the beginning and what we wanted to start with at launch.  On the horizon we have plans to create music patches for The Zone, Subway Runner, South of the Sea - Atom's Storm, more RedRocketTV player homes, The Metro, Borderlands-Style Fighting Arenas, and Project Zeta.  The hope is that with time our music library that we have to pull from will expand allowing for an even greater diversity of song selections between a great many quest/new location mods.

Also, all of this comes with a disclaimer that adding music to a mod is not an inherent, objective improvement.  Our decision to create this mod and add music to mods that didn't have any or utilized vanilla music only is a purely subjective choice out of personal preference as there is no one perfect way to experience a mod.  Some people want music everywhere; some want no music at all; and in most cases mod authors have good reason for not including custom music in their mods.  So take our work here as merely an alternate way to experience these already exceptional quest/new location mods.

Lastly, you are highly encouraged to download and install any of these various community-made music mods as a full overhaul of the in-game soundtrack if you like what you hear when using these patches!

The included music files with each patch were graciously provided to us with custom permissions by each music mod author.  You do not have permission to redistribute or reupload the included music files in any way, shape, or form!  Below is an imgur link to a series of images verifying all necessary permissions for the music used.  Granted permissions for creating patches to add music against the quest/new location mods listed above can be provided as well upon request.  Please DM me with any further questions regarding permissions.
