THIS MOD GUIDE IS DESIGNED FOR NEW, OR STRUGGLING PLAYERS!

THIS IS NOT MEANT FOR THE "VETERANS" OF THE MODDING COMMUNITY!

I get it, we all don't do things the same. This is MY guide on how I got my game running super smooth on Windows 10. If there's something beneficial to add to the mod guide LET ME KNOW so I can add it, but please don't plague my comment section with "you should have done this, or you should have said something closer to this."

I made this guide with the knowledge I have, and as "IDIOT PROOF" as possible. If something didn't work correctly, you didn't do it correctly. I'm sorry to be blunt, but 8/10 times that is the case.

If you made a mistake, that's completely fine. I understand completely and I will personally help you understand if you give me the time and patience to do so!

If I made a mistake and it actually wasn't your fault, I apologize, but other than that, this mod-guide is pretty straight forward.

    DISCLAIMER:

Idiot Proof is just a saying. I'm not actually calling you an idiot.

I'm definitely in the 'struggling' category. I've got two issues so far:

    1. The anniversary edition patcher says not to use the FOSE launcher, but your guide constantly says to load via FOSE. If I try loading via FOSE it says that the game version is not recognised (I've already run the anniversary edition successfully). Have I gone wrong somewhere?

    2. When trying to set up an ENB and changing the settins in my renderinfo.txt file, even after deleting it and having the game generate a new one, I don't have any settings for Anti-aliasing or Antistrophic filtering. I can only turn off Water Displacement. Any idea what I've messed up?

I'm using a fresh install of the GOG GOTY version installed outside programme files.

The Fallout Anniversary Patcher downgrades your version of Fallout for FOSE support. It also makes the Fallout 3.exe load FOSE as well.

I load the game with FOSE because I choose to.

Make sure before you start modding you install Fallout 3 Anniversary Patcher first, and patch Fallout 3.exe. Then install FOSE v1.3b2.

Make sure to start the game once to generate your .INI files.

Now install ENBSeries, and then the ENB.

Load the Fallout 3 Launcher and turn off anti-ailiasing, anistrophic filtering, and water displacement. This will do the same thing.

Thanks. That did the trick. I did a fresh install, used the anniversary edition patcher before doing anything else, and then changed the settings via the launcher. All working fine now.

It should. Just remember to patch the .exe with the Fallout Anniversary Patcher first before you do anything else. This will revert the game back to 1.7.0.3, from 1.7.0.4.

Hello, I'm pretty new to the modding community and there's a few things I just don't get about this:

1.-What is an ENB and why is it so important to install it? as far as I see them, Midhrastic and Chromatic Melancholy look like graphics enhancers, something I am not interested in adding to my game, but you put them as if they were a must-install so I am not so sure if I should install them or not.
2.-Regarding the first question, if it does only enhance the graphics, can I just skip it?

Yes, you can just skip it. Those ENB's are my favorite and seem to work pretty well for how old they are, and they look really nice!

You don't have to install an ENB. it just makes the world look a lot better with updated lighting effects, especially if you plan on installing texture, or overhaul mods. They're super easy to install, just follow the guide. (Don't worry about the DirectX portion. Windows usually does a good job at keeping it updated.)

It's not necessarily a graphics enhancer in terms of it changing textures, because it doesn't do that. There's a huge difference between Fallout without an ENB and Fallout with an ENB.

Thank you for your answer, unfortunately, I have no idea what went wrong while installing ENB's and now every time I try to open the game, an error shows up saying "The application could not launch correctly (0xc000001d). Click on Accept to close it". So I might've made an oopsie when installing the ENB since it never happened until I installed ENBSeries v0.451 and Midhrastic ENB. Is there any way to fix this easily without having to manually remove all the files one by one?

Also, as an additional note: My Fallout 3 GOTY didn't have a d3d9.dll inside of it when I checked before all the modding stuff, is that normal?

I'll have look into that error as I have never had it. Here's how you install everything.

ENBSeries: Copy only the d3d9.dll and enbhost.exe to your Fallout 3 folder

Midhrastic: Copy everything to your Fallout 3 folder.

Chromatic Melancholy: copy only the enbseries folder, enblocal and enbseries.ini file to your Fallout 3 folder.

If you need a bit more info, here's what I can give you:
1.-I play the Fallout 3 GOTY edition that was given for free some years ago on Steam
2.-When I first opened the game MAIN folder (Steamapps/Fallout3 GOTY) there was NO d3d9.dll
3.-The Error only appeared when I extracted the wrapper folder(ENBSeries) content onto the main fallout 3 folder.
4.-Removing the ENBSeries content fixed the error, I also looked online and some people also fixed this by deleting the d3d9.dll

YOU DO NOT EXTRACT ALL THE CONTENTS FROM THE ENB WRAPPER FOLDER, NOR DO YOU USE BOTH ENB'S AT THE SAME TIME!

      USE ONLY ONE!

You only need d3d9.dll and enbhost.exe from inside the wrapper folder.

(Don't worry about it not having a d3d9.dll already in it, It's okay. I'll just remove that from the guide.)

All you're doing when you delete the d9d9.dll is that it makes the ENB not work anymore.

That indeed fixed the issue! Game is running fine except for 1 small problem, the FPS are going a bit too low a bit, I can play with no problem, but it is midly annoying, so if there is a way to fix that, I'll appreciate it! (I installed Midhrastic)

Try downloading the latest Nvidia driver for your GPU. Geforce Experience will let you know if you have an update. Also, here's a couple tweaks that may help.

Type msconfig in your search bar, it will probably say system configuration, anyway, click it and go to boot. Once you're there press advanced options. You should see a section that shows number of processors. Click that and use the highest number in that section. (i.e. Mine is 20)

worked! I also assigned Fallout 3 in windows graphic settings to use my GPU and now it runs more smooth.
There's 2 last things I would like to mention:
1.-Should I undo the processors config you told me in the future?
2.-Just in case anyone else has a similar problem: Having Medal.tv app running in the background made my game get a black screen after I clicked to skip the intro cutscenes, Closing medal.tv fixed this issue, so if anyone else uses a similar recording app, that might be a problem.

Thanks again so much for all your help! Keep up the good work!

Keep the processor configuration. What it does is that it spreads the workload between all cores, instead of just a couple. It may not help much with Fallout 3, but more intensive games will definitely benefit from it.

If you're going to use a recording app, use Nvidia's. Press ALT+Z, and there will be a record button in the middle.

Also, download this mod. It'll help you fix your issue when using overlays. (Fallout 3 is VERY picky when it comes to overlays. It doesn't like it at all, but Nvidia's works fine for me, so maybe you'll have the same success.)

Here's a couple more fixes for you as well.

Type in choose power plan on your search bar and find high performance. If you don't see it under preferred plans, click show additional plans.

Go to your Nvidia control panel (left click on the desktop. It should be in the dropdown window.) open it and look for CUDA - GPU's under Manage 3D settings. Make sure that it's set to All. Scroll down a little bit until you find Max Frame Rate (set that to 59) What this does is that it minimizes FPS based CTD's. Scroll down a little bit further and you'll find a setting called power management mode. Change that to Prefer maximum performance if it isn't already.

      I hope this helps you!

      HAPPY GAMING!

There's two versions of Midhrastic. Are we supposed to install the Alpha version or the older 1.0 version?

Also, in the section that talks about installing the ESB's, it talks about installing Midhrastic twice. I assume you mean "Midhrastic" first followed by "Chromatic Melancholy" second (since there's only the three files in the CM folder).

Thanks for the help! Never played, and now going to be going in fully modded.

I uploaded this mod-guide at 5:30 GMT, so it was really late. My apologies for mixing the two ENB's.

The "second midhrastic" was supposed to be chromatic melancholy.

If you're downloading the midhrastic ENB, download the 2.0 version, as it is the latest.

Please tell me which mods to detail the wasteland should be used? I like when empty space is filled with meaningful details, objects. Should I use Fallout 3 Rebirth? He has VERY contradictory reviews, there is an assumption that the mod is not working. What alternatives do you recommend? I installed the Fallout 3 Remastered (GOTY) mod, I really like this approach to detailing the environment, but unfortunately the project is still in the early stages of development and does not cover the entire wasteland.

      • Loads of good environment mods from this guy AmaccurzerO.
      • And all of this guys environment animation mods don't take up and esp Ashens2014
      • Add lots of viewable distant objects with LODIFY - Fallout 3
      • You've probably seen this, but add small rocks within grass fade distance with Fallout 3 Rock Grass

There is a section under the description that talks about texture packs, and ALL the way at the bottom are optional mods to "take up space" in the wasteland.

I don't mean textures and animations, but mods that fill empty spaces on locations with objects - buildings, cars, garbage, barrels, crates, etc. Like mods do for FNV - "Desert Landscapes" by friendlynonmurderingsort, "New Vegas Landscape Overhaul Remastered" by MonoAccipiter, Enhanced Landscapes by Farsveinn, Mojave Vagabond by Spifferino. I'm looking for something similar for Fo3. And what about "The D.C. Interiors Project"? For some reason, it is also not specified, although in fact it is very conducive to immersion.

I have used The D.C. Interiors Project and it's a pretty neat mod. What it does is that it opens a lot of the wasted space in the downtown DC area.

Now, I'm not too entirely sure what else to use other than this mod. I'll have to do some more research, and get back to you!

Super! Practically what I was looking for. It's just a pity that all this is in separate territories and there is no global fashion covering the entire wasteland. But, nevertheless, thank you! This is closer to what I was looking for. I especially liked the Devastated City mod. That's the kind of redesign I was talking about.
