Castle Bleakstar is a bit of an oddity among the dungeons in Enderal. Partially, this is due to it's development history, as the current depiction consists largely of a dungeon originally called Keltyzar in the game's first release in 2016. This dungeon was later reimplemented for the Forgotten Stories update, where it also received it's quest integration. However, likely due to these complicated origins, the Castle Bleakstar we now experience in game is not without it's inconsistencies. Most notably, exterior and interior have entirely different styles and layouts, to the point that none of the characteristic features of one is present in the other.
The integration into Enderal's lore is problematic as well. Supposedly the main rebel bastion during the Bloodmoon revolt against the rule of Malphas and the Order, the exterior location does not have any military defences around the main tower structure nor signs of the damage that would have been caused by a siege. In some sources, the rebel hideout is also referred to as a monastery or temple instead of a castle, and although the interior design could match this description, the exterior once again defeats this purpose with its massive, unadorned towers.
This mod aims to tie the conflicting depictions of Castle Bleakstar into a consistent and visually striking design. Keeping only the concept of a grand tower structure, the exterior of Castle Bleakstar has been entirely redone in a new and unique style, the product of civilization after civilization occupying the same spot. Both the bridge leading to the castle and the defences surrounding the entrance now show the damage they have suffered during the siege by the forces of the Order before the Bloodmoon rebels finally surrendered.
The interior has been adapted and slightly expanded as well to match the new exterior. Still, the overall layout has been preserved to keep the associated quest intact. Castle Bleakstar now truly is a place of worship, a monument to one of the foundational entities of Vyn.
- Installation -
This mod requires a new game.
A save on which you have not yet visited the Dark Valley might work as well,
but I cannot offer any support in this case.
Backported Extended ESL Support is a soft requirement to ensure compatibility for all game versions.
Please load translation plugins after any other patches for this mod.
For matching distant visuals, use DynDOLOD to update the LOD for your load order.
- Enderal Gamplay Overhaul - Compatible with patch (balances the new enemies to be in line with EGO).
- Enderal Occlusioned Series - Compatible with patch (only needed if you use the Optional Exterior Addon).
- EVG Animated Traversal - Enderal Addon - Compatible with patch (available on the EVGAT Enderal Addon mod page).
- Mandragorasprouts' Statues for Enderal - Compatible, load before (higher up) than this mod.
- TrueHUD - HUD Additions - Compatible (boss widget for the new enemy).
- Mihail Ravens in Enderal - Compatible.
If you play Enderal SE version 2.1.0+ (available on ModPub), be sure to also download the Miscellaneous files for compatibility.
You do not need them for the Steam version.
Note: I have edited the location of two collectible items, in case you have trouble finding them:
- An Iceclaw near the dungeon entrance was clipping through a wall. It is now hidden in one of the ruined defense towers.
- The Soul of Kilana Hammerblow has been moved in service of environmental storytelling. Originally located in the dungeon interior, it can now be found in the exterior section of the main tower (at the center, next to the executioner's block).
