11 detailed natural eye colors to choose from for each playable character. Pick and choose!

Note: This mod requires Project Rebuild

About this mod

Ever wished you could change the eye color of one (or more) of your characters?

Now you can!

This mod replaces the eye iris of characters with new detailed textures, based on the natural range of human eye colors.
ALL options are available for ALL playable characters!

how to install

  • For each archive file you download, choose one .pak file (look at the pictures to know what's in there)
  • If you don't have it yet (I mean srsly tho??), go install Project Rebuild
  • Copy this mod's .pak file(s) into<steamapps>\common\DRAGON QUEST XI S\Game\Content\Paks\ (where <steamapps> is typically C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\depending on your installation)

Files and compatibility

This mod includes one archive for each playable character, and each archive contains all the eye color options for that specific character.
Choose one option per character
.

All the .pak files inside the same archive will edit the same game files (with some exceptions; see Breakdown below), so obviously they are not gonna be compatible with one another.
Also, any choice of file from this mod is not gonna be compatible with other files that mod the same thing. For example: if you choose one eye color
for Jade from this mod, but already have Jade's eyes modded from this Hair and Makeup mod, obviously only one eye color is gonna show up and the other will be overridden.

As always if you wanna troubleshoot compatibility with other mods, look no further than Mod Troubleshooting Tools.

In terms of files, every part of this mod is really really small (see the Breakdown below if you are interested).

The one exception that is worth paying attention to is some of the Hero's colors (Hero_Blue, Hero_Brown1Walnut, Hero_Brown2Golden, Hero_ChestnutBrown, Hero_DarkBrown and Hero_Green): these colors have a modified material that, in the case of the Hero, only seem to work as expected if the Hero's face mesh is modified from the current version of Project Rebuild.
I don't know of any mods that would have compatibility issues with this, however if you notice some I ask you could please report it on the Comments or Bugs section of this mod (I really mean it, it would help a lot)

Questions? Answers!

Why do colors sometimes look different between different characters? Aren't they supposed to be the same color?
Spoiler:
Show
In an ideal world I would just put the texture in and it would show up in game exactly the same way for every character.
In this world, the exact opposite happens. In order to have a particular color show up the same (or at least similar) for all characters I had to do a crazy amount of tweaking, down to every single color for every single character (and the tweaking was not the same for all colors; the opposite), and even after that they still don't look the same, for different reasons that are totally dependent on the game itself.
But I hope it's close enough.

I made a point of paying particular attention to Serena's and Veronica's eyes in order for all colors to look as alike as possible for them (since they are twins).

Is this mod compatible with [ X ]?
Spoiler:
Show
I wish we modders could just say "yes" or "no" right off the bat, but in fact it always depends on what files the mods involve. Scroll up to the section called "Files and compatibility"; you should be able to find your answer there.

If not, you will have to try yourself: do install this mod and the other mod you're interested in, and then launch the game and see what happens. If one of them doesn't show up, then use Mod Troubleshooting Tools to see what's going on. If either of the two mods overrides the others, then no, they are not compatible, I'm sorry.
I always try to keep my mods as compatible as possible.

Why this mod?
Spoiler:

The short of it:
I was very surprised that no one had ever made a mod like this!! Like, what were we waiting for??

Also, with the characters of this game having impossibly big eyes, the way the eyes are colored had always seemed to me to be lacking in all those amazing details that human eyes can actually have.

The slightly less short (but not as long as it should be) of it:
Spoiler:

Hey you, human!
Yeah you! You reading this.

What color are your eyes?
Violet? Yellow? An impossible cyan??
No, I didn't think so.

Wanna know my unpopular opinion about anime style? (Probably not but, you know, this is technically where it goes)
It doesn't help. At all.

If you look at yourself in the mirror and think you're not special, or beautiful, well I'd like to be here for the next century explaining the ins and outs of why you are SO BEAUTIFUL (despite of what society and other people say).
...But I'm only a modder and I made an eye color mod. So I hope, whatever color your eyes are (if you're a human, they are probably brown and this is amazing because brown eyes are MAGNIFICENT!), this mod will help you see what beautiful eyes you have (:

Will you add [ X ] to this mod in the future?
Spoiler:
Show
What I always like to say about the future of my mods is: Carpe diem.
And I mean: I don't know. While there certainly are many exciting possibilities and ideas, I cannot (and generally will not) make any promises for the future. This is why I like my mods to have a minimum level of quality and polish when I make any release.

That being said, this is what I think it would be important to add:
  • matching colors for the younger models of the characters where applicable
    Spoiler:
    Show
    Jade, Hero and Hendrik
  • possibly having P009 (Adult Veronica)'s eyes match Veronica automatically

What other mods are used in the screenshots?
Spoiler:
Show

  • The remaining non-vanilla costume colors in some screenshots are unreleased work of mine (don't worry, I'm making it happen as you read this ;D)

Can you teach me how to make recolors??
Spoiler:
Show
Not yet, but hopefully soon!

In the meantime, why don't you hop on the Discord? (: I'd love to chat with you! My handle is on my profile; or just ask for the person who made this mod, they know who I am ♥

Also, if you'd like to learn how to make texture mods, go the the Yggdrasil Community website. I would direct you there anyway to start with. With their tutorial(s), and a bit of their help on the Discord, I've personally learned to make mods extra fast, like, for real!

I'm a modder, can I include something from your mod in my mod?
Spoiler:
Show
First of all, if you're a modder why are you not on the Discord yet? ;D

Second: you can absolutely do whatever you want, I left cooked files, all nice and tweaked, in the Files section: scroll down to "backup of all cooked files" (you will have to sort them yourself though; you can scroll up to the Files and compatibility on this page and look into the Breakdown for reference)

Third: ...are you sure though? This is my own modding philosophy, but wouldn't it be better to keep things more modular for users? In your shoes, I would probably publish my mod and than leave a link to this one and suggest that users also use it.

Fourth: if you want the source textures to tinker with, of course! Come to the Discord and ask me.

♥ Thank you to

my friends kmxn and mike9k1 for their encouragement and their compliments (and heck if compliments don't make my day every time)

Link4565 for making Project Rebuild reality and always helping me clearing all the doubts that I have about how it works

the Yggdrasil Community where I find lots of actual community, and help; including (yeah you'll never believe this, I don't either!) Demolinizer5

You! (yeah! you reading this! Pat your own shoulder and go have fun <3)
