About this mod

Fixes and polishes for all of DS:R's material definitions (mtd's), most notably waters.

The DS:R Materials Update is pretty much what it says on the tin, an update for the game's material definition files, or .mtd's. This is primarily intended as an "install and forget" kind of mod, insofar as all of the changes made should be straight improvements over the unmodified game, hence the word "update" in the name instead of something like "overhaul".

-Changes-
The first change you'll likely notice once installing DS:R-MU is the water, particularly in areas like Ash Lake and the Undead Asylum where the water was, well pretty much broken. All waters now use physically correct Fresnel values, nicer reflection/refraction distortion, and a few have had their waves redone as well. TL:DR this means water looks more realistic and, typically, more reflective (save for some areas where the water was previously way too reflective).
The only real exception to this is the water in Sif's arena, as parts of it have reversed normals so I've had to disable Fresnel on it entirely, meaning the reflections there aren't angle-dependent like they are in real life.

Pretty much all the other changes are much smaller fixes and improvements. You may notice that metals pop a bit more and shadows are a bit stronger.
Oh, I also made the detail bump settings on the Gaping Dragon closer to what they were in the original game. Will do the same for other bosses if I find out about them.

-To Do-
Redo the waves on the rest of the waters.
I'd like to improve skin sub-surface scattering at some point. I tried once and wasn't very happy with it, so I'll take another crack at it eventually.
Could tweak foliage animations, as those are material definition properties.

-Installation-
Make a back up of the /mtd folder in the DS:R game directory.
Unpack the material update .zip into the game directory, and overwrite the files.
That's basically it. Move the backup version of the /mtd folder back into the game directory and overwrite to uninstall.
You could also use the mod manager.
