For all this in-game discussion of 'WAR'...
there wasn't that much 'WAR' in SKYRIM, was there?
Now there is.
This mod does what it says... It adds EPIC battles and skirmishes throughout SKYRIM!
While exploring the SKYRIM, you will come upon battles containing many, many NPCs spanning many, many acres of in-game ground.
At last count there are more than 2500 NEW, ANGRY NPCS spanning 100 DYNAMIC WARZONES and more to come!
This is a living work-in-progress. It is completely playable as of now, but will continue to grow and evolve.
COMPLETELY UNIQUE WARZONES EVERY TIME!
After a time, the WARZONES will respawn... same factions... different characters!
The NPC's levels are based, somewhat, on the player's level. You probably won't see a STORMCLOAK COMMANDER at level 1... but you might see one at level 5. Because of this somewhat random spawn generation, each battle will be different. Sometimes the STORMCLOAKS might wipe out the IMPERIALS in 2 minutes. Other times, the reverse may be true. And still other times, you'll be engaged in 20 minute battles that span acres of in-game ground.
You may even need to turn tail and run like hell. There's no shame in being a sissy.
It's badass if you have the computer to handle it.
WHAT'S A DYNAMIC WARZONE?
Simple. It's a WARZONE that is triggered by an in-game occurrence.
Join the IMPERIALS when looking for the JAGGED CROWN and MORE STORMCLOAKS will spawn at KORVANJUND. Additionally, a SKIRMISH on the road to KORVANJUND will appear!
Join the STORMCLOAKS on their 'side' of the mission and MORE IMPERIALS will spawn at KORVANJUND. Additionally, a SKIRMISH on THAT road to KORVANJUND will appear!
And wait... only ONE of the road-skirmishes will appear based ENTIRELY ON WHO YOU SIDED WITH!
But wait... you haven't sided with anyone? Then there's a huge STORMCLOAK vs BANDIT battle in the hills surrounding KORVANJUND which disappears when you're playing the JAGGED CROWN quests!
Depending on specific 'occupations', the appearance of Military Camps, some non-Civil War quests, the WARZONES will change to help bring the SKYRIM CIVIL WAR to life.
WHAT TO EXPECT
WARZONES : CIVIL UNREST adds 1000s of really pissed NPCs, new SCENERY, new BATTLEFIELDS and new BOSS-LIKE characters.Your reputation with the factions WILL suffer if you start killing indiscriminately - or if your aim happens to suck.Be careful your FOLLOWER/COMPANION doesn't get some friendly folks in the crossfire. While you're at it, be sure to do the same.If you are unfriendly with IMPERIALS, then you're going to get attacked by them. That simple.The inclusion of these battles may change any number of outcomes within the game. Save often.
WARZONES has been almost completely rewritten from the ground up and now includes many of the options you've been wanting and I've been promising ;)
WARZONES also features increased resistance in most CIVIL WAR engagements, including dramatically improved FORT SIEGES.
THE GOD OF WARZONES
WARZONES now features many user controlled options via a LESSER POWER known as SUMMON GOD OF WARZONES. For most users, the default settings will suffice so you may not ever need to summon him.The spell is given to you when the mod is installed.
Default settings are:
SPAWNCOUNT = High @ 2 NPCs per spawn point
CREATURES = On @ 1 per spawn point
CIVIL WAR = Active
Should you fail to receive the spell; many options can be controlled via CONSOLE commands. Information regarding console commands can be found below.These alterations take effect in-game and do not require restarting the game, however:After setting or resetting ANY variable, if you are in a WARZONE cell, you MUST leave the cell and return. For instance, FAST TRAVEL far away then back again to see the results.
ACTIVATING THE GOD OF WARZONES MENU
The user is given an in-game MENU called the GOD OF WARZONES which will allow customization of the WARZONES experience.On activation of the mod, you will be given a lesser power/spell. This spell is accessible via the MAGIC -> POWERS menu.Assign the SPELL to one hand and then cast the spell.The GOD OF WARZONES will appear before you and will offer you the menu-options of WARZONES. For most of you, you'll never need to adjust the defaults so you may never need to use this spell. If you do not receive the spell, all options are console configurable as detailed in the documentation in the section entitled BEHIND THE CURTAIN : FEATURES, OPTIONS and CONSOLE COMMANDS.
(It's not really called that)
Allows the user to adjust the spawn rate of specific NPCs. These NPCs are typically marked with 'withSPAWNoMETER'. These are separated from PARENT NPCs in order to maintain proper disable/enable status. The adjustment is available from the GOD OF WARZONES MENU.LOW = Spawn only itself (Low) for a total of 1 per point
LOW is roughly 50% of the amount of NPCs spawned in V2. HIGH = Spawn an add'l NPC (High) for a total of 2 per point
HIGH is roughly equivalent to the amount of NPCs spawned in V2.MADHOUSE = Spawn TWO additional for a total of 3 per point
MADHOUSE is roughly equivalent to double the amount of NPCs spawned in V2. Use with caution.
In order to maintain some diversity during the battles, there is a 1 in 10 chance that a spawn point will ONLY spawn ONE NPC. This will keep the battles from becoming too even (as in 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, etc). This will be absolutely more noticeable at higher spawn-counts. I mention this in case you are studying the spawn-counts and wonder why some are only spawning ONE while others are spawning the amount you set. There you have it.
This feature adds the possibility of a WARZONE CREATURE showing up in the midst of some WARZONES. The creatures are all 'vanilla'. Calling them 'Monsters' is a misnomer since you stand a better chance of getting a harmless animal than you do a Dragon, but when the Dragon does show up, it's killin' time!
0 = Off
1 = On (default)
It may be activated/increased or deactivated via the MENU or console. Enabling this feature activates a "dice-roll" chance of spawning a CREATURE/MONSTER at a WZONES MONSTER SPAWN POINT. This does not affect "vanilla" spawning, nor does it affect the WARZONES NPC spawncount.
HIGH : a harmless animal (Rabbit, a Deer, a Fox, etc... )
MED : a dangerous predator (Bear, Troll, Sabre Cat, etc...)
LOW : a dangerous monster (Werewolf, Dragon, etc...)
Note: Each spawn is random. A spawn-point set to 3 may yield a bunny, a deer and a dragon or can yield a werewolf, a fox and a Troll.The player may increase the amount of CREATURES spawned from a single spawn point by continuing to click CREATURES : ADD in the menu. The current number of spawns will be displayed. Creatures range from small bunnies to Elder Dragons and are spawned based on the player's level and random determination.For instance, should WZONESMONSTERS be set to 5, this may result in 3 bunnies, a Werewolf and a Deer. Or, it may result in 3 Dragons, a Troll and a Horse. The chance of a Dragon spawn is approximately 1 in 100.Because CREATURES will require resources to spawn, I do not recommend increasing beyond 3.There will be only a few of these spawn points placed throughout the world and are added simply to spice things up a bit.
WARZONES RANDOM SKIRMISHES
Optional feature (configures in-game) allows for the possibility of stumbling upon random skirmishes throughout the world. There is a default 1 in 10 chance that a random skirmish will spawn. I suggest you leave it like that, but you may control - or disable - your odds of finding these skirmishes through the GOD OF WARZONES menu or console commands.
WARZONES RANDOM AMBUSHES
As a subset of RANDOM SKIRMISHES, I've added RANDOM AMBUSHES. RANDOM AMBUSHES typically take place in lesser travelled areas and will spawn depending upon the Player's current alignment. If the player has not joined a side, or has completed the CIVIL WAR, the ambushes will spawn "general enemies". If the player has chosen a side in the CIVIL WAR and is currently engaged in it, the ambushes will spawn members of the opposite faction in addition to general enemies.
As of V5, the AMBUSH system has been further refined to include POST-CIVIL WAR conflicts which feature THALMOR and RESISTANCE FIGHTERS as well as the "usual" rogues gallery of people that hate you.
WARZONES TEST AREA : Mt. PAIN
A full test area has been provided for users interested in determining what the best settings for their system may be. The area is self-contained and spawns a large STORMCLOAK v IMPERIAL battle. Players who have not chosen a side may opt to stand and watch or jump in and start killing. Faction reputations WILL apply, so be sure to use a clean (and separate) save game.
WARZONES BATTLE SELECT
Warzones now includes the ability for the user to enable or disable specific battles via console command. Details in the BEHIND THE CURTAIN section of the documentation.
WARZONES DIVERSE FIGHTER SIZE
This feature randomizes the size of NPCs in order to give the appearance of a more diverse group of fighters as opposed to a group of clones. The range of size is generally proportionate to adult humans. Size has little bearing on STATS. This is a cosmetic alteration.
WARZONES IDLE MARKERS
Adds more diversity in the actions of the survivors. Now they may roam the battlefield drinking a beer, among other things. This is a cosmetic alteration.
Some camps have been added to select WARZONES in order to give the impression of more life. Surviving NPCs may choose to use the campsite in any number of ways (eat, sleep, warm by fire, etc)
WARZONES PERFORMANCE PACK
OPTIONAL ESP included in the archive. For those of you who require further possible performance enhancements, I've included an ESP which alters game-settings such as EXCESSDEAD, the amount of things that the dead will drop, and the accumulation of ARROWS in a way which, I hope, will increase your performance by reducing the amount of "crap" that's hanging around a battlefield. These changes are UNIVERSAL and will apply to the entire game.
... unless you have problems running LOW spawns, I wouldn't even bother with the OPTIONAL PERFORMANCE PACK.

IS WARZONES LORE FRIENDLY?
Pretty close, yeah.
I have attempted to keep the WARZONES somewhat logical based on the politics of the game, who lives where, whose territory is whose and who might happen to be around a particular place...
For instance, IMPERIALS vs STORMCLOAKS will usually be in the MIDDLE of the MAP, but avoiding most of WHITERUN... STORMCLOAKS vs BANDITS will take place in BANDIT infested properties in STORMCLOAK territory... same with IMPERIALS vs BANDITS... there's more, but why spoil the surprise?
In other words, the real estate makes sense - more or less - with some creative license for battle!
I don't necessarily recommend this for first-time players because some Vanilla dialog might contradict events in this mod.
I don't really like killing creatures/animals that are just trying to live their lives, so WARZONES contains epic battles between HUMANS and HUMANOIDS mostly.
I don't want to spoil the surprises, but that basically includes : STORMCLOAKS, IMPERIALS, BANDITS, FORSWORN, MAGES, DRAUGHERS, SKELETONS so on, so forth...
... as I move forward, more will be added, don't fret.
No animals were harmed in the making of this mod (although some might get caught in the crossfire).
COMPATIBILITY AND SYSTEM SETTINGS
I am telling you now that if you don't have a computer that can handle additional NPCs and locations that this will probably not work for you.
I'm also telling you now that nobody's computer can handle playing SKYRIM with 2000 NPCs on screen at the same time, so you will not see LORD OF THE RINGS set-pieces...
PLEASE err on the side of caution and begin using this mod with a save that has never "seen" WARZONES before.
If you are UPDATING, please DO NOT DO A CLEAN SAVE. You may orphan scripts that way. Save a game in an INTERIOR, update WARZONES, then WAIT INSIDE for 15 DAYS.
And, of course, be sure to keep a SAVE GAME from before you activate the mod. I don't anticipate issues, but your computer isn't mine and I have no control over it. Better safe than sorry.

TWEAKING YOUR COMPUTER
There are, apparently, many things you can do to get better performance from SKYRIM than the default settings provide. However, it requires some fiddling around. Just because the below tweaks worked for me doesn't necessarily mean they'll work for you, so I make no guarantees (and tweak at your own risk), however:
Be sure you are using the most recent OFFICIAL UPDATE. Major performance improvements were added.
Having an NVIDIA card, I also tweaked settings using NVIDIA INSPECTOR and use the latest video driver.
Within SKYRIMS'S GAME SETTINGS, I recommend REDUCING your DRAW DISTANCE, notably for NPCS. Past about 8 'ticks' you don't see NPCs as more than one-pixel-specs, so it occurred to me that would be wasting processor power on things you couldn't see anyway.
While you're at it, bring down your ITEM and OBJECT draw distances. Even reduce GRASS if you find it helps.
In some cases, getting SKYRIM to perform optimally on your computer will take a lot of trial and error, but honestly, it's worth doing even without using WARZONES.
KEEP YOUR RESOURCE USE REASONABLE: Even with the SPAWN-O-METER, this mod adds a LOT of content, so do your best to give it a chance. If you are running 20000 hi-res texture packs, armor replacers, a million other mods that add NPCs, ENB, FXAA, etc then it should come as no surprise to you when you crash. This is not the fault of this - or any other mod. It is the COMBINATION of things that is causing it. Common sense people.
If you're having troubles with this or other mods, maybe try dropping your resolution... yes, yes, we all want the game to run at 1920x1080 with 16xx AA, 15 Filter Samples, Ultra-HIGH Quality Textures and at a smooth 120FPS, but y'know, that's probably not a reality anyway. Bring it down a notch and your gameplay will probably improve overall... just sayin'.
UGRIDS TO LOAD: If your UGRIDS are set to anything above 5 and you crash, I'm only going to say 'toldya so'. You want the quick math? 5 GRIDS loads 36 cells COMPLETELY into memory. 7 GRIDS loads 64 cells. 9 GRIDS loads 100 cells. That means you are forcing your computer to load EVERYTHING from 100 game cells into memory. See? Crash-city. This is NOT a harmless alteration unless you have an uber-rig.
If you are getting a repeatable crash with no other mods and after following the instructions below, then I want to hear about it so I can look to fix it. If you can honestly tell me you've done everything you can to troubleshoot, then I will gladly hear you out.
NOTE : If troubleshooting your computer setup is not in your interest and/or you don't have time for it, I understand, but then doing something for you isn't in my interest. I am doing everything I can to make this mod work for most of you, and you gotta help me to help you.
As you would any other mod really. Copy the ESM and BSA into your game's DATA folder - or use the NEXUS MOD MANAGER (prefered). Activate it and off you go on your brand-spanking-new killin' sprees.
As of WZ4, we are back to ESM
The reason? Nearly everything is more "stable" when a mod of this size and scope is considered by the game to be a "master".
Known issue: When converted to an ESM, some landscape textures and some script appear to be ignored at MOUNT PAIN. I consider it a small price to pay for otherwise more stable performance.
INSTALLING THIS MOD TO CUT DOWN ON PROBLEMS:
A : The ABSOLUTE BEST WAY to install or update this mod is to use a SAVE GAME that has NEVER SEEN WARZONES BEFORE. This seems to be true of many mods with scripts.
B. If you have to start midway in a save that has already "seen" WARZONES, DO NOT MAKE A CLEAN SAVE! You are starting this mod, most likely, in the middle of your game. As such, you have already got a zillion variables floating around. If you attempt a clean save you will potentially orphan a script and will see errors in your Papyrus Log.
Once that's done, WAIT for 15 days INSIDE. This resets the spawn points you've already come across. One of the most reported issues is due, I believe, to this.
This mod adds a LOT of content, so do your best to give it a chance. If you are running 20000 hi-res texture packs, armor replacers, a million other mods that add NPCs, ENB, FXAA, etc then it should come as no surprise to you when you crash. WARZONES - OPTIONAL PERFORMANCE PACK : Offers dramatically reduced "dead and arrow" counts to increase performance for some. It executes UNIVERSAL alterations to the game and as such, may not be your cup of tea.

FREQUENTLY ASKED REASONABLE QUESTIONS:
IS WARZONES COMPATIBLE WITH WARS IN SKYRIM IV(WIS) , OCCUPY SKYRIM, SKYRIM MONSTER MOD and/or DEADLY DRAGONS?
Short Answer : YES, YES, YES a thousand times yes.
Long Answer : Your biggest problem when combining these mods will be if your computer can handle the additional NPCs. These mods handle things differently. The primary difference is that WARZONES creates CUSTOM SPAWN POINTS while WIS alters VANILLA SPAWN POINTS.
Secondarily, WARZONES creates sometimes HUGE areas of battle.
What WILL happen is that since WARZONES does not remove any vanilla spawn points, you WILL end up with the other mod's NPCs turning up in some WARZONES... which has the upside of adding to the mayhem!
So, I guess your other problem will be if you can live long enough to enjoy it!
IS THIS COMPATIBLE WITH ARMOR/OUTFIT ALTERING MODS?
Yes. Put them after WARZONES in your load-order. You may experience odd results sometimes. Also be aware that adding high-resolution textures may dampen performance especially in populated Warzones.
DO THESE GUYS RESPAWN? AND WHEN?
The dead do respawn IF their battle is still 'active'. Their respawn time is controlled by the game setting just as vanilla NPCs are. If you are using a timescale adjuster or if you have adjusted the respawn time with another mod, the WARZONE dead will adhere to that. Default respawn is 240 hours.
DOES THIS SCREW UP THE CIVIL WAR QUESTLINE?
Not to my knowledge. As mentioned in the description, this is not 100% lore-friendly and I'm not 100% perfect. If you come across something amiss, please let me know.
A QUEST APPEARS TO BE SCREWED UP BECAUSE OF A PARTICULAR WARZONE (or I DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO FIGHT ALL THOSE DUDES JUST TO TALK TO THE FIELD COMMANDER)?
For the love of all that is holy, DO NOT UNINSTALL THE MOD thinking that you can reinstall it later. If you find a QUEST or location that is impacted negatively by a WARZONE, DISABLE THE SPECIFIC WARZONE IN CONSOLE! The list of BATTLESELECT names is at the back of the INSTRUCTION MANUAL. If you can't figure it out, ASK first!
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE CIVIL WAR QUESTLINE?
Most Civil War battles disappear at the conclusion of the Civil War. Other battles remain with the winning faction taking over by protecting their new territories. Some new battles will spawn, some old battles will disappear.
HOW DO THESE "FACTIONS" WORK?
The NPCs spawned belong to unaltered vanilla factions.
Kill a STORMCLOAK and they'll get pissed at you.
As of now, there are no new factions and no NPCs other than those added by WARZONES have been altered in any way.
A NOTE ON FACTIONS : I have a theory and it's not a great one, but it the best I can offer. SOME folks have had trouble with the enemy faction treating them as such especially when starting WARZONES mid-game. Here's my advice. Kill one of your enemies and you'll be back to being comfortably despised across the land. I think it may have to do with the fact that you're starting mid-game and that the WARZONE NPCS maybe haven't processed you yet. At least that's a thought.
WILL THERE BE A LITE VERSION?
No. This version now contains the GOD OF WARZONES menu which will allow you to adjust the spawn count to LOW. Any lower than the LOW setting and frankly there's no point in using this mod. LOW features about 50% fewer NPCs than were present in V2, so nearly everyone should be fine.
AND WHAT ABOUT HIGHER SPAWNS?
Now that the GOD OF WARZONES SPAWN ADJUSTER is functional, it opens up a number of possibilities. You now have the option to increase spawns per point up to 5 (which is more than you']ll ever be able to use). Do bear in mind that too many spawns will absolutely cause you to crash, so go easy... but I do congratulate you on your system - or your optimism. It will not be a "polite" crash, your game will simply stop dead, so if you are going to fiddle with adding more NPCs, you should get accustomed to using Task Manager... hahah.
MY COMPUTER CRASHES WITH THIS MOD:
On a guess (an educated one), you're pushing your system too hard in one way or other. You may choose to blame this mod or you may choose to optimize your computer and/or reduce your expectations of what your computer can handle. Sorry to say it, but unless a bug is consistently repeatable, it's most likely not limited to this mod.
My second guess is that since you very likely installed it mid-game, there are things that you've done that will affect this kind of mod.
When you're just about to "report a bug" to me, please take a moment to consider these things:
- How many high-res texture replacers are you using?
- How many other mods are you using?
- How many "fixes" have you applied?
- How many "improvements" have you made to your INI?
- How good is your computer, really?
- Could you REALLY maintain a solid frame rate before you installed this?
- Have you tried to further optimize your computer now that you've got this mod?
- Did you do a CLEAN SAVE when updating?
- Did you set your UGRIDS to load to 7 or more because you thought that was a good idea? It's not.
- Are your draw distances all maxed out? They shouldn't be.
- Did you upgrade your shadows via the INI to very high quality, distance, redraw and softness?
- Are you trying to push too many visual effects such as AA, AO, ENB, FXAA and the like?
- Did you spend more than ten seconds on this before having a knee-jerk reaction to call MyGoodEye a douche and declare before the world that "this mod is buggy"?
- Seriously, these things are important.
If any of the above is correct, then you probably have some work to do.

This is not to say that the mod is 100% bug-free, but it is to say that your game and computer setup may have some impact on the problems you're experiencing.
I'VE UPDATED TO SKYRIM V1.6 AND THE GOD OF WARZONES WON'T TALK TO ME! WHAT TO DO?
From XENONCLOUDS : "Summon GOW, no dialogue. Get rid of him, reload save and then summon again. Problem solved. Make your selections, get rid of him again and save.. Easy peasy. I have no idea why this works but it DOES. This issue should now be fixed and won't occur again..and your all very welcome! :)"
There are some tips provided in the TROUBLESHOOTING section which may also help.
WARZONES MAKES ANIMALS DANCE, JIGGLE and FALL FROM THE SKY! WHAT TO DO?
From SOLENTIS, comes the solution to CAP YOUR FRAMERATE if you experience this oddity.
With those settings:
In the alternative, you can disable the particular WARZONE within which it happens. Typically it's been REDORAN PLAINS, so:
1 - Enter console (~)
2 - Type "set wzonesselectRedoran to 0" (no quotes) and hit ENTER
3 - REDORAN will be disabled the next time you return to it and the animals will go about their business.

I UNINSTALLED AND MY GAME IS STILL CRASHING. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?
Look, here's the deal. You and I have different systems and there is a very good reason why battles on the scope of WARZONES don't exist in the vanilla game...
... that reason is that NOT EVERYONE CAN handle the added stress on their computers.
There's a 'limit' to every machine and when it reaches that limit is just - basically - dies.
Kind of like blowing your engine while speeding in a car... one minute you're going along at 100 MPH, the next, you're billowing smoke and trying to pull over.
I am not a computer engineer so I won't be able to troubleshoot your machine specs. Also, I really have no idea how well you've optimized your machine, whether your drives are fragmented, whether you're playing a "pirate" version (and I don't want to know if you are), whether you prefer COKA-COLA over PEPSI... none of that info is going to help me help you.
Rule of thumb : TRY IT. If it works, great... if not, lower the spawns then try it again.
The best I can offer is that I don't release the mod until I've tested it on my machine and experienced no crashes. I cannot possibly test every single outcome of every single quest using every single mod.
You and I will have different mods, textures, load-orders, so on and so forth. I have no advice on any of that. If the game crashes when you enter a zone of multiple NPCs, then 95% of the time, you are overstressing your machine.
I don't mean to be standoffish, but you were warned from the beginning that this mod is not going to function for every single one of you.
CRASHES NOT RELATED TO OVERSTRESSING YOUR MACHINE :
Now THOSE crashes I want to hear about. Try to be as specific as you can and try to be sure that you can REPEAT the crash/bug. Isolated incidents of oddness will be chalked up to "shit happens".
TEST YOUR SETTINGS ON Mt. PAIN
Way up in the NorthEast (upper right, almost directly East of Fort Kastav) corner I placed a test area called WZ : MOUNT PAIN. This was done so you could test your settings. Please do so with a clean save.
The assumption is that if you can run MT. PAIN without any frame-rate drops, then your WARZONES settings should suffice. Remember that this is not a guarantee and MT. PAIN is less complex than many areas.
You will be given the Map Marker with Fast Travel enabled when you load the mod. In order to access MT. PAIN, you may need to add the following to the GENERAL section of your SKYRIM.INI file.
Note : You will know if you need to add this to your INI if you "bounce back" on your first time fast-travelling to WZ : Mt. Pain.

Better WARZONES Soldier Uniforms by Omeletter is available. It adds variety to the STORMCLOAK and IMPERIAL uniforms (without adding high-res textures) by using available Vanilla resources. Highly recommended if your system needs to free up some resources, but you want some new variety.
