   If it is black in the inventory mode, you must not have a Icon image select in the object in the Construction Set.

   If it is showing black, or looks like it is inside out in the inventory, it means you do not have a bump map.
   You will need to download and install the dds plugin from developer.nvidia.com to be able to make bump maps fast and easy.
   Here is a fairly well written tutorial for bump maps.
