I must be stupid, but I have no idea how to use this mod...read the very brief installation instructions, but I can't figure out if it is necessary to create custom setting or what...

I've tweaked the AO variables and ended up turning everything down because I don't like the dark look of default HBAO. However there is something that still bothers me, which are the AO shadows where the grass meets the ground. Can be easily spotted here:

hello, no warries. I'm glad to help when i have time. SSR is not rt. ssr on low is the old ssr which gets applied only on some surfaces like. The new ssr is under high and affects more materials and it's a bit demanding. Has some artefacts also.
an easy fix would be to lower down the AO Reflection Multiplier =0.700000 this is colose to vanilla try something like 0.3 and maybe AOSpecularMultiplier = 0.700000
Ugly the ugly effect is made buy realy high AOAmbientMultiplier try somting like 1.0 and see the changes
will realsed a better update for SSAO but the idea is you can change tha values to fit your eye candy. I left the values high so ppl can notice the differences

It's very nice of you. I find it strange that nobody talks about it, maybe I have a problem with my games or my settings and only me has this problem. Here is some example, with the location on the map and the screens:
Screenshots are taken without any light or weather mods, and without custom.ini. You suspected well that with the custom.ini, even last "Better SSAO" or "Better HBAO+", the gray reflection is accentuated, and if I use a light mod, even a mod made for dx12 like RPL Lighting mod, the places of the screens are with gray reflections on all that metal or reflective texture, even Toussaint, Exclusively during the day and indoors. Afterwards, it may be the mod that is badly adjusted or my pc that does not render well enough. And since I find that the basic version of the game lacks something, there is no other alternative than a light mod or your mod.
I recall that I play under DX12, No RT, and that this problem only appears if I set the SSR to "High". Regardless of the game settings, or those of my screen, the problem appears as soon as SSR is on "high". Of course I can compensate via the gamma of the game or my screen, or by increasing the AOinterior, but suddenly, all the places in the game are necessarily affected and not very realistic or immersive. I can also play with the SSR on "Low", but suddenly I have bad renderings on the water and illogical reflections on the characters and the textures, especially during bad weather or places with a lot of light sources . And playing under dx11... it's not crazy in terms of performance since the latest game updates.

hey i think i know what the problem is. If you simply delete values i custom.ini some values simply overrite your dx12user.setting in ...Documents\The Witcher 3 so to fix this go in your settings filies and loook for AO settings there [PostProcess] somewere here maybe the got overriten
The same happens if you just delete the custom.ini i think the AO settings get overwritten and saved
if that dose not help will try today to work more on the HBAOenv Dark maybe i can fix the issue there
Noted that I also use the "DisableAllCameraLights=true". But it doesn't change anything if I disable it (I tried just in case). I only add the lines to deactivate the artificial lights, otherwise I don't change anything else. At Toussaint, the metals and crockery lose detail and are blurry. Toussain In the other regions, the sewers and the metal braziers have strange reflections, the ground with cobblestones or tiles too, as well as the character, and during bad weather too. Other Regions
Maybe you can figure out what's going on, or have an alternative, because I can't improve the visuals of the game without having to sacrifice SSR, and so many additions for the DX12.
Is it my idea or did this mod restore vanilla wind before next gen? I don't know, but I noticed a rather strange change in the hangman's tree and watch over the swamp
