Uploaded new patch for Tweaks users. It will prevent Tweaks to reset ProShadows values. You can also use Tweaks sliders and presets to choose ProShadows settings.
Low & Medium = Lite High & Ultra = Main File Supreme = Spiced Ultimate = Firehawk
Screenshots attached if you want to use the sliders instead presets. In case you already configured Tweaks and want to keep your settings.
Now we also have a compatible version with More Shadows and other similar mods. I don't recommend to use it. This version won't fix the buggy shadow blend between shadow steps (cascades). Only for people who want to use mods that increase light occlusion sources and doesn't mind the glitchy blend.
I just want to be sure I am installing the mod correctly.
I have: TWEAKS + More Shadows/More Shadows in Toussaint.
So, 1) I downloaded only the version of your mod in the miscellaneous section: Proshadow - More Shadows (TWEAKS Patch) 2) Copied the bin in the game directory, (rendering file overwritten) 3) changed the values in the in game menu as shown in your screenshoots (Ultimate)
that's it?
P.S.: before changing the values, i had
Cascade shadow map size set to 8192 (like max spot shadow) Cascade shadow distance scales were: 8,6,4,2
Should I still use the ones indicated in your screenshoot or the ones i had were "better"
You can increase or decrease cascade shadow map as you please. It will only affect shadows smoothness. I recommend you to use 6144 instead 8192. Quality-wise is almost the same for a cascade0 in 8, but you can save performance for other things.
About cascade distances, it's better to leave X, 3, 3, 2 for any settings. Cascade0 is the one you will notice the most. The other cascades only need to be increased if your FOV is above 75. But increasing FOV further in this game causes a lot of visual glitches due to its engine.
Spot shadows always must be equal or above (better above) than cascade shadow map. It helps with shadow flickering in long range and on Geralt and NPCs faces. Doesn't have much impact in performance or quality anyways, it's an extra.
ProShadows focuses on achieving the best quality-performance relation while fixing those bloody buggy shadows. There are several versions for users with different hardware caliber but, even with a hulky PC, i don't recommend values above Firehawk. You can get better quality for sure, but the performance loss would be enormous compared to the visual benefit. Is always better to put some juicy ReShade or any graphic mod available on Nexus.
Nah, it's fine. We talked about how it works more than how make it work. Not really interesting if you only want the results. Those very few interested in such things can scroll down a bit and find it. I'll make it sticky if we end with too many pages after this one.
Magnificent! I tried tune those settings myself, but none of my efforts proved to be balance on both performance and graphic quality. Now I'm using the lite version and it's already pretty and stable, no abruptly popping and immersion breaking shadows, with no fps drop. Can't thank you enough!
I'm assuming next-gen hasn't fixed these shadow issues so this mod is still applicable today?
EDIT: Hmm, it appeared to fix the shadow flickering I was experiencing at certain areas in the game. Need to play the game more to see if it indeed fix this issue but so far so good. Although the Shadow Quality slider in-game didn't revert to Low. It's still on Ultra+. Is this supposed to happen? I followed the instructions installing this manually.
I'm gonna guess the Next-Gen version now have an extra shadow preset called Ultra+, so now it can show that option instead of bugging the slider in settings. If you follow the instructions it must work. Some users however reported issues in Next-Gen, even if you installed right.
No matter what I do shadows on character related meshes looks incredibly bad and low-res - Only way to fix this is by using Ray-Traced shadows.
I don't know if the mod isn't supposed to fix the type of issue I have to begin with - I tried to fool around with the listed ProShadow settings without any luck.
For reference the picture is using the Firehawk 1.5 preset).
Hopefully someone more educated with the shadows in this game and this specific mod can help me out, cheers <3 !
On the DX12 next-gen version, the setting "MaxCubeShadowSize=4096" makes the shadows disappear, when you get too close to them. I don't know if messing around with that setting would fix it, but as is, it shadows deletus.
However, I've noticed that sometimes the game renders some shadows that are further away before rendering shadows that are closer. Is this just some fault of TW3 engine, or is this fixable?
Check again that spot ingame. To me it looks like in the first picture that house is 2D and it's rendered to 3D getting closer. I can remember that the engine handle some terrain this way to improve performance. Could be this case.
How curious... To be honest, i was expecting many more issues than this without an update. The Next-Gen version could (and should) handle shadows different than the original version.
I kinda sorta made it work by removing the adjustments that weren't in the dx12user.settings to begin with, and only changing the ones that were. But I still see some problems here and there.

sorry if it is a stupid question
Yep, everything installed right.

mod worked as it should
but shadow tend to go from bright to dark when i aproach them, happens both in vanilla shadows and with yours mod.

Even with the new Ultra+ settings, I still see shadows pop in.
And thank goodness it does, the shadows in this game, without this fix, are a yikes.
Edit: (Full disclosure) I'm using DX11(Nextgen), I manually installed it following the instructions here. Working.

What is that setting for anyway?
